Obituary:
HENSON, GEORGE HOWARD, Sr. – Born in Nashville, 14, 1931, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Henson II; died 30, 2012.

Surviving family members are: brother, Robert F. Henson III (Bob) and his wife Margaret; nephew, Robert F. Henson IV and his wife Ann; son, George Howard Henson, Jr.; daughter, Janet Bennett; four grandchildren; and eight great nieces and nephews. George is also survived by his best friend of forty years, with whom he shared his life and traveled much of the world, Mary Helen Short.

George got a rather slow start in life. His first life threatening condition was pyloric stenosis, which was corrected surgically when he was only three months old. Next came polio and spinal meningitis, at around six years of age, re: which “they” said he would never walk again. “ ” didn’t know George! He taught himself to roller skate, then to walk, then went on to playing football! He starred in the sport at Chattanooga City High School, played Varsity at the University of Chattanooga (now UTC), played on an army team in Korea, and played three years of intramural football for his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, at Vanderbilt, from which he graduated in 1956.

George served the US Army 2nd Infantry Division in Korea from 1953-1954; he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. His two most memorable moments from his Korea career both involved General Maxwell Taylor. George had only been in Korea a short time when General Taylor came to inspect his unit. General Taylor said to the “sock-footed” George, “Soldier, you’re out of uniform”, to which George replied, “Sir, yes Sir!” The conversation continued: “why?”; I can’t wear my boots, Sir”; “why”?; there’s a nail in one, Sir”; “Give it to me.” George handed the boot to the General who put his hand inside and felt a nail protruding about a quarter of an inch into the footbed. “Get this soldier a new pair of boots”, ordered the General, who then went on with his inspection. The new boots arrived within a few minutes, and were personally presented to a very impressed and grateful young George! The next memorable moment found George on a plane with General Taylor, several months later; the General remembered him and asked him how his new boots were holding up!

A high point in George’s later life, and yet another Korea connection, came when he was asked to serve as Secretary on the “Committee to Erect a Tennessee Korean War Memorial”, to honor the Tennesseans killed during the “Conflict”. George’s major responsibility was gathering and ordering alphabetically the names of the fallen for inclusion on placques which were to be placed on the wall behind a sculpture. The funding for the project fell into place, and  a contract was signed with sculptor Russ Faxson for the creation of a bronze statue of two service men—a paratrooper and an infantryman—with a map of Korea in the background. The Memorial was erected on War Memorial/Legislative Plaza in front of our State Capitol, and dedicated on 4, 1992. (Russ told George that he used him as the model for the infantryman- anyone who knew George can see the resemblance!)

George’s resume covered several careers, including Assistant to the President of Eisle, a former medical equipment (including thermometers) manufacturing company, and Assistant to the President of Jack Daniels Distillery.

His last career, which he enjoyed the most, and of which he was the most proud, was that as Director of the Grants Division of the State’s Department. George’s major responsibility in this job was bringing private foundation money from large corporations (such as Kaiser-Permanente, Kellogg, Robert Wood Johnson, Levi-Strauss, etc.) into the State to fund primary (health) care centers in some of the State’s less affluent counties.

George and Mary Helen spent as much time as possible from the early “eighties” through 2005 traveling and seeing natural and man-made wonders of the world. traveled through the national parks “out west”, down the length of the California coast, and through Alaska and Nova Scotia. With friends Ann and Bill Duncan they rode Bactrian camels in Inner Mongolia and Dromedaries in Egypt. With Bob and Margaret they rode elephants in India, and, incidentally, on another trip to the sub-continent, the four of them plus friend Evelyn Page (five grey-haired non-scary looking Americans in all!) were deported from India (long story—humiliating then; funny now!), but, after a quick side trip to Sri Lanka, triumphantly entered India!

George and Mary Helen stalked Komodo Dragons on Komodo Island in Indonesia, Kiwi in New Zealand, Spiney Echidna and Koalas in Australia, Sloths in Central America and Columbia, Reindeer in Scandinavia, Penguins in Chile, and, with Ann and Bill, yaks in Tibet and a BROWN panda named Dun Dun in Xian, China. haunted the world class museums in Cairo, Athens, Paris, London, Leningrad (prior to it’s re-becoming St. Petersburg), New York, Chicago and DC. “explored” Mayan and Incan ruin sites, and visited Buddhist and Hindu temples across Asia and the sub-continent. chased rainbows and sun rises across the South Pacific, and , with Bob and Margaret, followed a spectacular sunset reflected by the snow down the entire Himalayan chain during a flight from Katmandu to Hong Kong.

No matter how fabulous the sights of the world, however, they were always glad to get home to the wonders of the US, including safe drinking water fountains!

George was a life-long Episcopalian, however, he attended Woodmont Baptist Church (WBC) with Mary Helen until illness prevented him from doing so after 2008. He never could quite get the hang of the Lord’s Supper “process” in the Baptist Church, and always ate his wafer and drank his grape juice as soon as it was passed to him, rather than waiting for the commands to do so after everyone was served!

Dr. Jon Roebuck, Pastor of WBC conducted a Graveside Memorial Service for George on , 3, 2012, at Woodlawn Memorial Garden. There was military participation in the Service in honor of George’s service to continued...
