Obituary: Please visit Elizabeth's photo memorial at: http://gallery.yulefrog.com/elizabeth-horn.html Thank you. Miss Elizabeth Horn, our sister, auntie, and friend, passed away on , 7, 2015, due to complications from pneumonia. Elizabeth never talked about her age. And although you can do the math once you read her birth year, age is just a number, and hers will remain unlisted here. To her family and friends, Elizabeth was a fiercely loyal and devoted companion. And to those who were unable to meet her in person, our sincere condolences. We offer this poor substitute, a thumbnail sketch of the beautiful woman we knew and loved, as partial compensation. Born in 1921 in Wisconsin, Elizabeth moved to Portland, Oregon with her mother in the early 1920s. She attended Linnton Elementary School and graduated from Roosevelt High in 1940. high school, she took a job as a clerk at the main branch of the US Bank in downtown Portland. Did we mention she was loyal? She worked her entire professional career, which spanned more than four decades, for that same branch of the US Bank. She was the first in her immediate family to obtain a driver license and a car, and she relished her role as family chauffeur. She took to heart the jingle, See the USA in your Chevrolet and with friends and family by her side, put hundreds of thousands of miles on her beloved 1964 Impala and the several vehicles that Valiantly (here's looking at you, Plymouth) tried in vain to replace it over the years. As a child of the Great Depression, she learned to pinch pennies il they squealed, and eventually, she saved enough squealing pennies to travel the world. She kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland, walked Chinas Great Wall, explored Hiroshima, Japan, cruised the Amazon, sailed the Caribbean, and floated through the locks of the Panama Canal. She toured the mainland US, the UK, and Europe, and made several trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, and Canada. She once claimed to have visited Timbuktu, but we think she was pulling one or more of our legs about that-a favorite pastime of late. She was a long-time volunteer at the Portland for the Performing Arts (PCPA), the Portland Art Museum, and Art in the Pearl as well as the Catlin Gabel Rummage Sale sort center, where she found treasure in both the donations she helped to sort and the friendships that she made. She was active in several organizations, including the English Speaking Union, Native Plant Society, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She also held life-long membership in Portlands First Presbyterian Church and was a firm believer in the Church of Golf on Television. She never married, and she had no children of her own, but she did have a favorite sister, niece, and nephew. She delighted in reminding them that they were, in fact, her only sister, niece, and nephew. But that didn alter the truth. were indeed, her favorites. Like Ethel Merman, Elizabeth loved a parade. Specifically, she loved the Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade, and she was always cheered by The Clan Mackay bagpipers and their righteous renditions of Scotland the Brave. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her mother, Alberta Kraatz Vianello, her favorite aunt, Elsie Kraatz Blankenship, her step-father, Dan Vianello, her father, Frank Horn, and her brother-in-law, Walter Simons. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Simons (Bob), and her nephew, Bruce Simons, of Portland, Oregon; her niece, Katherine Wilcox (Katie) and her husband, Ken Wilcox of Carmel, California; her sister-in-law, Wynter Lovejoy of Yelm, Washington; many special friends including Cecilia Crater, Evelyn Rogers, and Laraine Vonfeldt; and several of her sorority sisters from Beta Sigma Phi. The family sends a heartfelt hank you to Bonnie, Beth, Rita, Teresa, Sibone, and all the caregivers at The Garden Place for the love and kindness they showed to Elizabeth and her family over the years. Thanks also to the US Navy for lighting up the western sky with a missile launch just as Elizabeth was venturing off on her final adventure. A spectacular salute, it was truly above and beyond, and the best use of taxpayer dollars we've seen in years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you don something blue (her favorite color), do a Happy Dance in Elizabeths honor, and donate some of your time or treasure to your favorite charity or community organization. A celebration of Elizabeth's life will be held at Skyline Memorial Gardens & , 4101 NW Skyline Blvd. Portland, Oregon, on , 13, 2015. Friends are welcome to attend the viewing beginning at 1:00 PM, as well as a short ceremony, which will begin at 2:00 PM. Wear blue, if at all possible. Elizabeth will be laid to rest in Skyline Memorial Gardens after the ceremony. |

Obituary: Dorothy Bernell (Lang) Horn, age 96, of New Plymouth passed away in a local assisted living facility , 23, 2015. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm, , Aug. 28th at the Plymouth Congregational Church in New Plymouth with Pastor Susan Howe officiating. There will be a coffee hour at the church following the service. Graveside services will be held at 10 am (PST), , Aug. 31st at Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens, 300 SE Myra Rd. in Place, WA with Rob Lantrip, grandson-in-law, officiating. Condolences may be made to Dorothys family at www.shafferjensenchapel.com. Cremation and services are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, New Plymouth. Dorothy was born in Nevada, MO Jan. 12, 1919, to Lewis N. and Gladyce (Wheatley) Lang. Her brother Joe was born in 1928. The family moved from Missouri to Marsing, ID in the early 30s. There three sisters were born; Wanda, Rosalie and Gerri. The family then moved to Vale, OR in the mid to late 30s, where her father took 80 acres, two sections out of sage brush and started farming. Another sister Carol and a brother Nolan were born on that farm. Dorothys young life was full helping on the farm, haying, milking cows and of course helping with the younger brother and sisters. Dorothy married Herbert J. Horn in Nampa, ID on 25, 1938. started their life together in a one room cabin in Myrtle Point, OR, where Herb had been a logger for the past 21 years. In 1939 they were blessed with their first son Marvin Lewis. Shortly after, while still in Myrtle Point, Herb contracted Polio. He was sent to Portland, OR for treatment and later moved in with his brother Oliver and wife in Eureka, CA. Here with the help of his wife Dorothy, family and a Chiropractor and many months of physical therapy Herb was able to walk again without the aid of crutches or a cane and this was when Dorothy at age of 21 became a care giver. Later the family moved to Eugene, OR where Herb went to Machinist school and Dorothy worked for the railroad. Herb finished school, the family moved to Walla Walla, WA. were blessed with two more sons, Orville J. OJ in 1944 and Herbert D. in 1947. Dorothy was always taking care of her husband, family, or someone else. We had neighbors that lived across the street, a railroad family, she always babysat their children. This was her passion; I can count the number of children that she babysat while in Walla Walla. Dorothy was always busy, she worked for a while, afternoon and evenings in the laundry at St. Marys Hospital. Later when her son Orville was a baby she had her sister, Rosalie, come in the summer to babysit so that she could work nights at the Birds Eye Plant. This allowed her to get some rest during the day. Her husband Herb was a Machinist for the Continental Can where he worked days. Dorothy and Herb raised three sons, all three graduated from WA-HI and all three are retired Military. Her husband, Herb passed away in Nov. 1967. Dorothy lived in many places after Herbs passing. To start, she was a live in house keeper, taking care of a family with three children. She moved with this family to Lakewood, WA. She then moved to Tacoma, WA with her son Herb and from there to Virginia with her son OJ and his wife. She was always ready when the family or person needed help. She later moved to New Plymouth, ID to care for her mother when she could no longer live alone. She was a volunteer at the Senior in New Plymouth for many years. She worked at her church helping with their rummage store. The last three years she lived at Dorian Assisted Living Place in Ontario, OR. She was very happy there and loved everyone. Dorothy is survived by sons, Marvin (Pat) Horn of WA; Orville Horn of VA; Herbert Horn and his special lady friend Pam Ward of WA, who loved Dorothy like a mother; sisters, Wanda Rocks and Rosalie Crump both of ID, and Gerri McDonald of UT; sister-in-law Fay Lang of WA; grandchildren, Lewis (Leah) Horn, Herbie (Jolene) Horn both of WA, Dana Kohlhorst, Mary Kay (Ed) Edgar, Mark (Stephani) McPhearson all of VA, Erin (Rob) Lantrip, and Ian (Lacey) Horn and grandson-in-law John Cushing all of WA; 23 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a third one on the way; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herb; her sister, Carol Frazier of CA; brothers, Joe of WA and Nolan of ID; granddaughter, Joney Cushing of WA; daughter-in-laws, Sharon Horn of VA and Mary Horn of WA; brother-in-law, Rudy Crump of ID; grandson-in-law, Daryl Kohlhorst of VA. Dorothys family would like to give special THANKS to Dr. Paul Gering Jr. of Ontario, everyone at Heart Hospice in Fruitland and Dorian Place in Ontario for the wonderful care they gave Dorothy. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Heart Hospice or Dorian Place in care of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P. O. Box 730, Payette, ID 83661. |
