Obituary: Karen Laughlin (Gerard) Hegefeld, a longtime resident of Albany, Oregon, died 9, 2016. She was born 23, 1938, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the youngest of eight children born to Ralph McKinney and Angeline (McFarland) Gerard. She grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania, living in Blairsville and Latrobe. During her teenage years, the family moved to California, where she graduated from Glendale High School in 1956. Karen married Ronald H. Hegefeld in 1957. made their home in La Crescenta, California, and their daughters Teresa and Jennifer were born. In 1970, Karen and Ron decided to escape the Los Angeles smog and moved the family to Albany, Oregon, where they have made their home ever since. Karen held a variety of jobs. In California, she worked in the Los Angeles District Attorneys office. In Albany, she was a teachers assistant at Central School, and then she became a library assistant at the West Albany High School, a position she held for many years. retiring, she volunteered in the Albany hospital gift shop. As a member of Albany First United Methodist Church, Karen has been active through the years, singing in the choir and serving on numerous committees. Karen was intelligent and thoughtful, and she had a quick wit. She was a friend to all she met. She and Ron enjoyed square dancing and western dancing, and traveling in their recreational vehicle. An avid reader, Karen took pleasure in attending he little book club; she liked playing Bunco with longtime friends, and she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles with her daughter Teresa. She also liked playing Monopoly and other board games with her children and grandchildren. She had been known to give horseback rides to her beloved grandchildren, and she especially loved putting together an annual Easter egg hunt for them. What many people will perhaps remember most about Karen is the inspiring courage and determination that she displayed when she learned in 2006 that she had a rare cancer of the bile duct, in an advanced stage. More than anything, she wanted to live to be with her girls and to see her four grandchildren grow up. The cancer was removed at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer in New York City, where Karen remained under treatment for six weeks before returning home. While fighting through the ensuing medical complications for the next 10 years, she made many friends in the Samaritan community. During those years, Karen lived a full life, celebrating special occasions with family, marking milestones in the lives of her daughters and grandchildren, and proudly seeing her beloved grandchildren Kirsten, Jake, Levi and Cade grow into the intelligent, educated, loving, accomplished people they have become. Karen is survived by her husband, Ronald H. Hegefeld, daughters Teresa H. Salyer and Jennifer H. (Jeffrey) Burch, grandchildren Kirsten Burch, Levi Salyer, and Cade Burch, all of Albany; grandson Jacob Burch of Jackson Hole, Wyoming; a brother, Stephen Roy Gerard of Missoula, Montana; and a sister, Angela McFarland Gerard (Paul) Lockridge of Lenoir City, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; by brothers Ralph McKinney Gerard, Jr., Lionel Jack Gerard, Paul Mason Gerard, and Felix James Gerard; and by a sister, Lois Isabel Gerard Parente.
