Obituary: Rosa Lee Housh, 76, passed away on 11, 2017 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. She was born on 9, 1940 in Del City, OK to Gail Hamilton and Eula Mareld (Brawner) Housh. Rosa had a brilliant mind and graduated at the top of her high school class. She enjoyed history, genealogy, framing pictures, sewing, and listening to her records. Rosa was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, George Marion Housh, Lilian Kriete, Eula Mareld Babe Burrow, Ruby South and Mary Lou Hayes. Survivors include her two brothers, Gail R. Housh and wife, Dolorus, and Hal Housh; and host of nieces and nephews. Inurnment will be held in the Sunny Lane at a later date |

Obituary: Medrith Mozell Houser was born 15, 1923, in Sulphur, Oklahoma, to parents Garvin E. Atkins and Ruth Faye Atkins. She and her family moved to various places in the state, but always called Ada home. She graduated from Ada High School in 1941. During the early part of World War II, she worked in Long Beach, California and Washington, D.C. Her family eventually settled in Oklahoma City in 1943, living on N.W. 10th Street. Mozell and her mother, Ruth Faye, operated the Atkins Grocery at 1114 1/2 N. Robinson for the remainder of the war years. Mozell began attending Oklahoma University in 1943 as she continued to work, commuting back to her home in Oklahoma City; eventually earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work in 1947. Shortly after graduating in 1947, she met the love of her life, Arvel Woodrow Houser. were married, 26, 1948. resided on Cairo Street in northeast Oklahoma City. Arvel worked for the Veterans Administration while Mozell operated the Westinghouse Laundromat at 2613 N. Eastern. In 1952, Mozell and Arvel moved the new community of The Village at 9518 Greystone Avenue. Soon after, in , 1954, Mozell gathered neighborhood children, along with her own two young sons, Arvel, Jr and Keith, to do activities such as coloring, cutting and pasting, finger painting, learning letters of the alphabet and numbers, arts and crafts, games, outdoor playtime and all the things children did in those days at ursery school. She and a friend worked with the children in the Houser home on Greystone Avenue for two hours a day, three mornings a week. This was the beginning of the The Village Playschool. In 1957, the Housers built a building on Britton Road to house the growing school. Still continuing with the preschool concept, Mrs. Houser added care for infants and toddlers. Soon more room was needed; so two more additions were constructed. By this time The Village Playschool had grown from 20 children to 125 children. In 1962, through the Character Research Project and her local church, Mrs. Houser learned of the Montessori Method. Members of the congregation who attended this seminar returned with reports of a new teaching method based on the research of Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor. A Montessori instruction class soon became available in the Oklahoma City area led by Ms. Lena Wickramarante of Sri Lanka, who had studied and trained directly under the guidance of Dr. Montessori. Ms. Lena had been one of the presenters at the Character Research Project seminar. Mrs. Houser enrolled in the program, completed the Montessori training and received her certification in The Montessori Method. With this knowledge and certification Mrs. Houser began training her own teachers using the Montessori materials and methods. The solid reputation of The Village Playschool widened making it necessary to purchase other buildings to house the growing number of students. By this time, the total enrollment had reached almost four hundred. The ages ranged from infants to sixth grade. The little band of children led by Mrs. Houser and her friend began in 1954 as a simple, fun neighborhood group and grew and grew to become The Village Montessori School. During the growing development of Village Playschool, Mozell and Arvel moved to 2941 Rollingstone Road in Quail Creek where they were the seventh residents of this new addition. Here they joined the Quail Creek Country Club and raised their family. were active in the First Christian Church, 36th and Walker, and in later years at Northside Christian Church. Mozell and Arvel helped to found the Quail Creek owners Association in 1979, where Arvel served as Executive Director. his death in 1989, Mozell served as Executive Director until her retirement. She continued to live in her home on Rollingstone Road until 2016. Her final days were spent in the tender attention of Stone Creek Memory , Edmond, and Epworth Hospice where she passed away on 19, 2017 at the age of 94. She is preceded in death by her husband Arvel Houser, Sr., sisters Maureen Williamson, Ruth Faye Mundy, and Mary Beth Newcomb. She is survived by two sons, Arvel Woodrow Houser, Jr., and Keith Houser and wife Denise, seven grandchildren: Holly, Eric, Shantel, Stephen, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Mandi, and six great grandchildren: Faith, Clive, Luke, Blake, Ivy, and Ava. Mozell leaves behind the legacy of touching the lives of thousands of children, parents, and grandparents in the Oklahoma City area. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hope Chest OKC. |
