Obituary: Margaret Magdalene Herring McGuire Hodges was born on 8, 1919 in Cowden Oklahoma, a farming community in Washita , pioneered by her great grandparents and grandparents, the Rhodes family. Orphaned early, she was raised by extended family, primarily by her beloved aunts, first Oma Tidwell of Cordell, and then Bonnie Rhodes in Cowden where she played basketball and graduated HS, then attended Southwestern State in Weatherford, OK. She married Monroe McGuire of Mountain View on 1, 1940. Two sons from that marriage, Errol and John were raised in Tulsa. Monroe, an OU graduate, a CPA working in finance, first in banking and then the Sunray Midcontinent Oil Co., passed away in his prime on 12, 1959. In 1962 Margaret was introduced to Clarence Hodges, of Oklahoma City, oldest brother of the Hodges Trucking Co. family, who was immediately smitten by Margaret. A whirlwind courtship was followed by marriage on May 12, 1962 and an extended honeymoon. Margaret and sons joined Clarence and his daughter, Claresa in OKC, where Margaret and Clarence lived an exceedingly happy life, tragically cut short when Clarence was killed in an accident on the job 9, 1965. Margaret remained in OKC raising her family until they departed for college. Following a brief move to Tulsa, she settled in the Belle Isle area where she remained over forty years. Margaret was quite active in her life, community, church, and extended family. A long-term volunteer at Children's Hospital Burn Ctr., a sponsor of many students at Oklahoma Christian , a reliable friend cooking and caring for others; and, close to sister in-laws, she was Aunt Margie to a dozen nieces and nephews and second mother to some. Margaret was always taking care of others. A collector of fine antiquities, she enjoyed a hobby-business transporting antiques from New England to Oklahoma over many years. Margaret traveled extensively worldwide, was an avid reader, enjoying history; and travelled regionally in the U.S. with a group of OKC close friends, a gray angels band sans motorcycles nicknamed the Wild Bunch by one of Clarences brothers, with whom she remained lifelong friends. At age 94, Margaret left her home for Independent Living and migrated to Assisted Living in 2016, where she resided until 5, 2016. Margaret passed away on 7, 2016 at age 97 with her children by her side. She was preceded in death by both parents, husbands Monroe McGuire and Clarence Hodges. Margaret is survived by her sons Errol M. McGuire, Phd. of Brunswick, Maine; John B. McGuire and his wife Christy Furman of Pueblo, Colorado and daughter Claresa "Resa" Hodges Stowe; grandchildren John M. McGuire of Los Angeles, California, Laura McGuire and great granddaughter Clara of Honolulu, Hawaii; and grandson Christopher Stowe of Oklahoma City; numerous nieces and nephews, sister in-laws, brother in-laws and many friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the arthritis foundation or kidney foundation. A celebration of Margarets life will be 3 p.m., , 10th in the Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel. |
