He was a 1962 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School. Before retiring he worked as Electronic Technician for the Post Office for 38 years. He is survived by his wife of 49 and a half years, Pat Harkey; sons, Michael Chris Harkey, Jonathan Thomas Harkey; daughter, Kelly Harkey Porter and her husband Brian Porter ;brother Robert Bobby Harkey (Eltie);sister, Alice Susie Cauble (David) and Marie Judy Merchant;sister-in-law, Linda Oliver; grand children,Mekenzi Porter and Valarie Porter. Obituary: Harold Helms Harkey, formerly of Charlotte, and a current resident of Denver, NC, went to be with our Heavenly Father on 1st, 2013, at the age of 89. He was a longtime resident of Weddington and also lived in Charlotte before retiring to Green Mountain, NC. Harold was born on 27, 1923, to the late Mark and Lola Harkey of Weddington. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Catherine and brother, Marcus Jackson. Upon graduation from Waxhaw High, Harold served in the 13th Infantry of the 8th Division of the US Army in WWII from 1943 through 1945. He served in four campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe and at one point under General Patton. He earned 4 Bronze Stars, a WWII Victory Medal, a Medal of Good Conduct, the Combat Infantry Badge, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Europe Medal, a Sharpshooter Badge, and an Honorable Service Lapel pin. the war, Harold began a lifelong career in the electrical contracting business where he retired in 1989 as a partner of Reid Electric in Charlotte. He was a member of the American Legion Post 262 and the Charlotte Eastern Lions Club, where he served as Secretary and earned a Distinguished Service Award from the NC Association for the Blind. Harolds many contributions included making the Duplex Cottage at Camp Dogwood for the Blind a possibility, and helping many of the youth groups at First United Methodist Church in Charlotte. Hobbies included gardening, enjoying wildlife and traveling. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Edna Ray Crane Harkey and by four daughters; Bonnie Duckworth and husband, Randall of Charlotte; Linda Stallings and husband, Gene, Lisa McClanahan and husband, Steve, as well as Betsy Moorhead and husband, Mark, all of Denver, NC Survivors also include five grandchildren; Lauri Baker, Amy Peterson, Adam Geist, Jennifer Salzman, and Matthew McClanahan as well as five great- grandchildren; Payton Baker, Lily, Nathan and Anna Clark Peterson, and Finley Geist. He was dearly loved and admired by his family. A memorial service will be held at McEwen Pineville Chapel on , 6th at 2:00 PM where family will receive friends immediately following. He was born 12, 1942 in Charlotte, NC to the late Ervin Ernest Harkey, Sr., and Viola Schenck Harkey.
