Obituary: Helen (nee Braviak) Horack, a lifelong resident of Clifton, peacefully completed her lifes journey and accepted Gods call on 30, 2015. Throughout her journey, Helen touched numerous lives and she will be greatly missed by all of us. The youngest of seven children, Helen attended Clifton Public Schools and, aspiring to become an educator, she received her teaching certification from Paterson State Normal School in 1935. Much later, she returned there, (now William Paterson University), to complete her requirements, and graduated magna cum laude in 1972 with a BA degree in education. Helens career began, in the late 1930s, by teaching English and Mathematics to the foreign born, a program which was a part of Cliftons Adult Evening School, sponsored by the Works Progress Administration developed by President Roosevelt. Due to the Great Depression, Helen then traveled to find work in the Randolph NJ School District until she married John Horack in 1940. Shortly, thereafter, she became a faculty member at Clifton School Three until her daughter, Cathy Ann was born in 1951. Helen then spent some time, at home, to raise her daughter, Cathy, but she went back to full time teaching in 1958, at Clifton School Sixteen, where she taught kindergarten and first grade, until she retired in 1984. Helen was honored at a retirement dinner, which was organized by several parents from the school, and she was presented with a Proclamation, from the Clifton City Council, for her dedication to education and the community. Helen was also nominated, by a former student, and was accepted into, Whos Who Among American Teachers in 1994. Helen was a member of the N.E.A., N.J.E.A., P.C.R.E.A., Clifton Teachers Association, Wayne Elks Auxiliary, and Ss. Cyril and Methodius Marion Rosary Society (president for two years), Parish Council, and N.C.C.W. She was also a CCD instructor and church lector. She served on the School Sixteen HSA Executive Board, Cliftons 75th Anniversary and Parade Committee, the SUCCESS program at Clifton High School, Clifton Womens Club, and the Board of Elections, working at the polls at School Sixteen for many years. She also volunteered for, and participated in, many local events and programs. Helen enjoyed spending time at the New Jersey shore family home in Brigantine and also trying her luck at Harrahs Casino in Atlantic City. Mrs. Horack was a recognizable favorite throughout the City of Clifton as evidenced by the 250 guests, who attended her 100th birthday celebration gala held at the Valley Regency on Feb. 4, 2014. Mayor James Anzaldi presented her with a resolution from the City of Clifton, along with the very special Key to the City. Rev. Richard Bay presented Helen with a Papal Blessing from Pope Francis and she also received a special blessing from her nephew, Deacon Robert Mahaffey. Helen was further honored with congratulatory wishes from the White House, the Governors Office, and State Assemblyman Thomas Giblin. Helen is survived by her daughter, Cathy Ann Kartanos (former Clifton School Two first grade teacher) and husband Nicholas as well as her granddog, Mica, whom she so adored. She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews, as well as an extended step family of grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Ava Grace and Stephen . Helen was predeceased by her husband John Horack, her parents Anna and Joseph Braviak, her 3 brothers, Andrew, Joseph (former Clifton Police Captain) and Thomas Braviak, and her 3 sisters Anna Boyko, Marie Boyko, and Rose Miller. Helen will now be reunited with her family whom she loved so dearly. Friends and family are invited to visit and celebrate Helens life at Bizub-Quinlan , (managed by her former first grade student Timothy Bizub), 1313 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, NJ, on from 4-8 pm. services will be 10:15 am from the funeral home and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church, Ackerman Ave., Clifton, with interment following at Immaculate Conception , Upper Montclair, NJ. We wish to extend a loving thank you to all of our family, friends, and the staff at Gates Manor, for being such a special part of Helens life. You have made her journey on earth so beautiful. We will carry her in our hearts forever. |

Obituary: Patricia Hopper, 75, of Toms River passed away peacefully on 8, 2017 at her home. Born and raised in Paterson, Ms. Hopper resided in Kearny for 17 years before then moving to Clifton for 24 years until retiring to Toms River in 2013. Before retirement, she was employed as an LPN at Hackensack University Medical in Hackensack for 15 years. Prior employment had been as a Perfusionist with Passaic General Hospital for 20 years and St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark for 10 years. In her youth, Pat was very athletic and was an avid champion swimmer. She played basketball and baseball on the Paterson and North Bergen Debs. She had a love of teaching, her favorite thing being teaching young people to try everything for the experience. She was a parishioner of St. Maximillian Kolbe RC Church, Toms River. Pat is survived by her wife, Mary Sullivan, of Toms River and her two sisters: Nancy Szipocs of Pennsylvania and Linda (Ashurek) Rosenblatt and her husband, Howard, of Elmwood Park. Devoted aunt to Danielle and Erica Rosenblatt, Robyn Konrad, Jason and Steven Hopper and Cathy Paris. She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Tjietske (Tina) (Duyn) Hopper-Ashurek and her brother, Albert Hopper, Jr. Services will be 10:45 am from Bizub-Quinlan , 1313 Van Houten Ave., Clifton and 11:30 am at St. Philip the Apostle RC Church, 797 Valley Rd., Clifton. Private cremation to follow. Visitation from 4-7 pm.
