Obituary: Catherine Blanchen Crothers Hodges Catherine Blanchen Crothers Hodges, born 24, 1923 in Andong, Korea to Presbyterian missionaries, died in Birmingham on 5, 2014. There is great rejoicing in Heaven as the gates are swung wide for her triumphal entry. Predeceased by her parents, Rev. John Y. and Ellen M. Crothers; her brothers, Rev. James and Rev. Samuel Crothers; and her son, Terry Wallace Hodges, Catherine is survived by her sons William P. Pat Hodges; Larry J. Hodges and his wife, Pam; daughter \ in \ law, B. J. Hodges, of Anthem, Arizona; her grandsons Adam J. Hodges and his wife, Allison, of Nashville; Vance C. Hodges and his wife, Joy, of Neenah, Wisconsin; and her granddaughter, Ansley C. Hodges of Orlando. Also surviving her are six great-grandchildren. Her childhood was spent with her family in mission fields in Korea prior to her return to the States for secondary education at Lower Merion High School, Ardmore, Pennsylvania. She earned her undergraduate degree from Maryville and a Masters of Elementary Education from Samford University. She distinguished herself as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women in education and in teaching first and second grades for 23 years in the Birmingham School System. A true pleasure for her was teaching children of some of her former students. Catherines love of birds found her to be a very dedicated member of the Audubon Society and the Alabama Ornithological Society. Being a long-time member of the late Helen Kittinger birding group afforded her many wonderful bird watching pleasures. She was also a member of the Blanche Dean Chapter of the Alabama Wildflower Society. Being the sister, daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Presbyterian (USA) Ministers prepared Catherine for a very deep faith. In Birmingham, she joined Five Mile Presbyterian Church in 1950 where she served as School Teacher, Elder, and Trustee. She was a very active member of Presbyterian Women, receiving the Presbyterys Woman of the Year Award in 2009. Catherine is well known as a loving mother, doting grandparent and great-grandparent, as a generous friend, a patient teacher and a good and faithful Christian. Missing her will only be put into place as we rejoice in her heavenly homecoming. A funeral service will be held at Five Mile Presbyterian Church on , 18 at 11:00. A Celebration of Catherines life will be held at Danberry in Inverness on , 19 at 2:00. Obituary: BUTLER RAGLAND HODGES 2, 1950 – 7, 2014 Butler Ragland Hodges, born 2, 1950, died 7th, 2014 at the age of 64. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and a surrogate father to countless relatives and community kids who always looked up to ‘Coach’ or ‘Uncle Rag’ for advice. His life was lived fully with many adventures along the way. The third youngest of 10 brothers and sisters, at age 18 he joined the Army to help support his aging mother and father. He was almost immediately sent to Vietnam, serving with distinction and receiving the bronze star. He would ultimately serve in Desert Storm as well as Vietnam, making him one of the few men to serve in both, and retire from the National Guard after 20 years. Vietnam, he started a family and landed a job at Dunlop Tire where he would work for many years, but would subsequently retire from the Boeing with 21 years of service. He always worked hard and instilled that work ethic in his children; however his ‘career’ was always a means to an end. His real joy and passion came from his family. Whether it was coaching his kid’s ball teams or picking music with his brothers and sisters or heading out with his wife to pull slots in Tunica, family always came first. He was never afraid to take a risk as well. Over his life, he owned or helped run 2 service stations, a barbeque pit, went to nursing school as part of his military service and played at writing and recording songs. He was asked to perform a song he wrote for the troops returning from Desert Storm at a ‘Welcome ’ ceremony in Bangor, Maine. He never met a stranger and there was literally nothing he couldn’t do or was afraid to try. He was a decent, kind, giving, loving, humble man and it was a privilege for anyone who was lucky enough to know him. He will be truly missed and is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Patricia, his sons Jonathan (Leslie) Hodges, and Jeremey (Jennifer) Hodges; 3 brothers, Alonzo “Tea”, Randy, and Jack Hodges; 1 sister, Barbara Webster, and 3 grandchildren; Emily, Katie, and Gabe.
