Obituary: Eric Kolton Houpt, age 2, died , 29, 2016 at LeBonheur Hospital in Memphis. He was born on May 1, 2014 to Kassidy and Alyssa Houpt. Obituary: Bishop Emeritus William R. Houck, 89, died , 9, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. A Rite of Reception of the Body will be held on , 15, at 4 p.m. in the Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle. Visitation will follow until 7 p.m. , and then continue on , 16, from 10 a.m. – 12noon; and 2 – 7 p.m. with a Vigil/Wake Service at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Cathedral on , 17, at 12:30 p.m. with interment in the Bishops’ on the Cathedral grounds. A native of Mobile, Ala., Bishop Houck was born on 6, 1926, to William R. and Mildred Blanchard Houck. He was ordained a priest on May 19, 1951, at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile. In addition to his parish assignments, Bishop Houck was quickly put in to the ministry of Catholic education. He was serving as Secretary for Education, Superintendent, principal of John Carroll High School in Birmingham and pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Jackson in early 1979. On May 27, 1979, Pope John Paul II (now St. John Paul) ordained Bishop Houck into the sacred order of bishops. He served with Bishop Joseph B. Brunini until Bishop Brunini retired in 1984; and on 5, 1984, Bishop Houck was installed as the ninth bishop of Jackson. Bishop Houck was a lifelong educator. He is a past president of the Southern Association of s and Schools. He was also active in the National Catholic Education Association, Southern Association of Independent Schools and Accreditation of American schools in Latin America. During his tenure as bishop, he focused on many issues involving education and evangelization. Bishop Houck served as Chair of the U.S. Bishops’ committee on evangelization and helped develop and publish: “Go and Make Disciples: A National Strategy for Catholic Evangelization,” which is still in use today. He also carried on the tradition of his predecessor by being actively involved in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue; and actively speaking out against injustices and inequities. Bishop Houck was a past board member of the several national Catholic boards, and the Mississippi Governor’s Task Force on Infant Mortality. He was also chairman of the Mississippi Religious Leadership Conference and president of the Ecumenical Organization for Whispering Pines – a hospice ministry begun for AIDS patients whose families had abandoned them. While still serving as bishop of the diocese, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Houck as President of the Catholic Church Extension Society of America in 2001. Catholic Extension supports mission dioceses in the United States. Bishop Houck continued to serve as bishop, splitting his time between the diocese and Chicago (Extension’s headquarters), until Jan. 3, 2003, when his retirement was accepted by the pope. He remained President of Catholic Extension until retiring in 2007 and returning to Jackson. Bishop Houck was President Emeritus of the Catholic Church Extension Society up until his death. In recent years, Bishop Houck stayed active in diocesan, chancery and cathedral life. His presence at liturgies and parish events was a testament to his ongoing desire to be engaged in church life. Bishop Houck is survived by his sister, Mildred “Millie” Houck Reilly (Warren) of Mobile, Ala.; his brother–in–law, Richard J. Hebert of Jennings, La.; many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Elizabeth “Bettye” Houck Hebert, and his brother, Dr. Raymond L. Houck. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bishop William R. Houck Education Trust with the Catholic Foundation; Catholic Charities; or the Diocese of Jackson’s Catholic Service Appeal. |

Obituary: Peyton Hovious Houchins, age 24, died suddenly on 29, 2010, in Oxford, Mississippi. Peyton was born on 19, 1986, in Jackson, Mississippi. He is the son of Larry and Pamela Houchins of Jackson. He graduated from Jackson Preparatory School in 2006, where he played basketball and ran track. He attended the University of Mississippi and planned to graduate in May 2011. Peyton had unique creative abilities and a contagious enthusiasm for all things. He never once met a stranger. His gift of love for all people and relationships was without equal. A loyal friend to all, even strangers, his friends came from every walk in life. Peyton was a rare individual, with a zeal for life, Saints football, music, basketball, and being around the ones he loved. His lifelong passion for basketball began at any early age and extended into summer AAU leagues, varsity high school competition and, more recently, college intramural leagues. Peytons interest in music was all encompassing. He performed with several bands based in Oxford and Jackson, voluntarily promoted dozens of others and, at the time of his death, had plans to launch a record label. Each and every person surrounding him felt Peytons energy and excitement. He loved his family and friends, and was the center of every gathering. He will be greatly missed. Peyton is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Grizelda Palmer of Corinth; and his paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Lem Houchins of Vicksburg; his great grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Green of Fort Payne, AL; and Mr. and Mrs. D.M. Palmer of Corinth. Peyton is survived by his parents, Pamela and Larry Houchins of Jackson, his brother Palmer Houchins of New York City; his future sister-in-law Cathryn McIntosh of New York City; his grandfather David Palmer of Corinth and his wife Joann; his aunts and uncles, Penny and Randy Long of Corinth; Pat and Nancy Palmer of Corinth; Nancy and Robert Williams of Memphis; his great aunt and uncles, Jim and Sheila Palmer of Jackson; John N. Palmer of Jackson; his cousins, Becky and Jeremy McElduff of Kansas City, KS; Rob and Amy Williams of Nashville, TN; Laura Kate and Colby Carmichiel of Oxford; and David Palmer, Ben Long and Claire Palmer, all of Corinth. The pallbearers will be Mark McVey, Stewart Hood, John Love, Rob Carpenter, Thomas Cooper, Winn Walcott, Perry Taylor, Shane Mason, Ben Molpus, Steven Ross, Justin Garner, John Barrett and Kennedy Miller.
