Obituary: Arnold Townsend Hammond, 85, passed away , 22, 2010 at the MS Veterans in Jackson after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers Disease. Services are scheduled for 10 AM , 28, 2010 at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Madison. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM , 27, 2010 at the church and from 9:00-10:00 AM before the service . Interment will be in the Oakwood in Winona, MS. Arnold was born on 25, 1925 in Winona, MS, the younger of two children born to Harry Carl and Laura Townsend Hammond. Arnold grew up in Winona and completed high school at Winona High School, where he was captain of the football team. His high school sweetheart and future wife, Martha Hamilton, was homecoming queen and valedictorian of their graduating class. Arnold graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1948 where he was a member and part president of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army and was stationed on Iwo Jima during the war. On May 14, 1949, Arnold and Martha were married in their hometown of Winona. During the early years of their marriage, Arnold taught business for a brief period at Binford High School in Duck Hill, MS. He also briefly operated a dairy farm in the Winona area, but eventually settled into the life insurance business as a salesman. Arnold and Martha had four children, all born during the 1950s while they were living in Winona. In 1960 they moved their young family to Jackson, MS where Arnold continued his work as an insurance salesman. One thing that can be said with certainty about Arnold Hammond is that he loved Ole Miss football. In fact, one of the main reasons he did not mind at all moving to Jackson in 1960 was that he knew he would be closer to the already planned Memorial Stadium, where many of the big games would be played in the 1960s. Arnold also loved golf and tennis. Arnold and Martha and their children were faithful members of First Baptist Church in Winona, and then Broadmoor Baptist Church in Jackson, where Arnold served as deacon and School teacher. Arnold was a faithful and dependable Christian man. He knew how to get serious when the situation called for that, but he was also know well for his loving sense of humor. In 1975, to help pay the bills which included feeding, housing, clothing, and educating four children, Arnold ventured into the restaurant business with his two partners George Heard and Clint Collins of Memphis, TN and Grenada, MS respectively. Together these three men founded Wendys HCH and opened the first Wendys in Mississippi at the corner of Hanging Moss Rd and Northside Dr in Jackson. eventually shared ownership in fifteen Wendys stores at various locations around the state. Arnold was also part owner, along with Doug Cunningham, of Gridleys Barbecue in Jackson. He is preceded in death by his parents Harry Carl Hammond and Laura Townsend Hammond, and one brother, Carl Hammond of Winona. Survivors include his wife Martha Hammond, sons Jack Hammond and Lee (Carol) Hammond all of Jackson; daughters Linda Hammond (Jon) Bloszies of Columbus, GA and Laurie Hammond (Jim) Williams of Marietta, GA; four grandchildren, Peter Hammond and Andrew Hammond both of Jackson, MS, Ben Williams of Marietta, GA and Sean Bloszies of Columbus, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews. In the year 2000, Arnold and Martha were both able to travel to and take part in a reunion ceremony on Iwo Jima with other surviving soldiers and their family. The family wishes to thank the staff and the Sonny Montgomery VA Hospital, , and Hospice in Jackson, MS for their courteous and professional care. |
