Obituary: Mary Theresa Homanick, age 97 of Warren, went to be with our beloved Lord on , 12, 2015 at My Doctors Inn in Sterling Heights, Michigan. She was born May 29, 1918 in Sheppton, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late George and the late Mary (nee: Vozar) Repko. It was on a fateful day in Binghamton, New York that Marys journey in life took on new and special meaning when she met Michael, the man who would steal her heart and, ultimately, greet her at the altar as the two became husband & wife. Their dreams and visions began to take wing as they picked up stakes and made their new home in Michigan. Mary became a full-time housewife and poured the best of herself into being the mother to two beautiful children who she loved and doted on immensely. Mary grew up in a family with five siblings, 2 brothers and 3 sisters, making for a total of 6 children who were very close to each other. Of the many memories she treasured, one of the most precious was of her sisters washing the dishes each night as they sang and harmonized to some of the popular songs of the day. She grew up in a small mining town in Pennsylvania and reflected often on the many times she and her cousin would go picking huckleberries, (which we now call blueberries), to sell along the roadside. Unfortunately, they ate more than they sold,...still, the memory was precious. Her childhood reflections were also filled with the fascination she held for dragonflies. There was simply something magical about the way they flitted in the air that made them her favorite insect. Mary often reminisced about her life in the 30s and 40s,…which, by the way, would have been her teen and early twenties years. It was an era filled with many of those who would become known as our Greatest Generation,…but certainly was a special time in the life of this young girl. Some of Marys fondest reflections were of the nights she spent dancing at the pavilion which was merely a short walking distance from her house. She also enjoyed visiting some of the local venues that hosted her favorite music genre, the Big Bands. That era was rife with many different bands,…with one of her treasured memories being the evening she got to see Ozzie Nelson and his band on stage. The 30s holds another special significance as thats the age range she was when she learned to drive. There was a bit of necessity figured into her newfound abilities, but none-more-so than her desire to shuttle her children back & forth to school each day. Her children recall how theyd be taken to school in the morning, picked up to enjoy lunch at home, taken back to school for the afternoon, then picked up for the journey home. While her childrens peers were doin the lunch thing in the school gym, Marys kids were enjoying a meal by Mom,…with the added pleasure of watching Soupy Sales while eating. How cool was that? Mary was an exceptional gardener who poured the best of her TLC into nurturing a garden of her own at home. With a green thumb and an eye for beauty, she managed to create quite a display of splendor and magnificence,…all with the help of Mother Nature, of course. She was also known for being a lover of animals, and took that love to a new and special level when she introduced a parakeet into the family home. Known for being trainable with languages, she taught her feathered friend how to say phrases like; Hello Mary,…Go to church,…the ever-popular, Pretty Boy,…as well as several other words and phrases. Being the compassionate lady she was, she also taught her children the importance of being kind to every living being. The only time she worked outside of the house was in her twenties when she took a position with ANSCO where she worked in their darkroom checking camera film for flaws. But without a doubt, Marys best work was what she performed in the kitchen with the help of a stove and oven. Like most Moms of her era, she could cook up a storm and produce a meal fit for a King,…and often did. If you left her table hungry, you just weren tryin. But as much as she worked some incredible magic with her cooking skills, its the masterpieces she created as a baker that will forever be remembered,…first & foremost. And on the top of the heap will be her delicious and mouthwatering Apple Pie,…so good that it made your eyes roll back in your head! When Mary wasn working or attending to the needs of her loved ones, some of her favorite pastimes included reading, solving word search puzzles, and crocheting. From curling up with a good book…to exercising her mind with puzzles…to expressing her creative side with artistic needles, Mary knew how to relax and stay sharp all at the same time. Just as the parakeet prompted Mary and her family to Go to church,…thats exactly what every held in store. She was a proud member of Warrens, St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church for over 60 years and always looked forward to attending church and celebrating all of the Holy Days. s were so important to Mary, she wouldn even allow her children to use scissors on that day because she considered it a form of work,…and was a day of rest! Yet each would find Mary working hard to put together a time-consuming, wonderful dinner for her family to enjoy. Go figure? Mary wore a number of loving hats throughout her life, yet theres no question that one of the most endearing was her Grandma Hat,…the one that embodied a precious, unconditional love that she shared openly and with fervor for her three granddaughters. Her support and interest in their lives was unwavering. Whether it was making them eggs in a shell, playing endless continued... |
