Obituary: Martha Conaway Hancock, 65, went home to be with the Lord on , 14, 2015. She succumbed to terminal brain cancer (glioblastoma) while receiving hospice services at Gadsden Regional Hospital. Although severely disabled by cancer, she miraculously survived for more than two years following the diagnosis and was able to spend quality time with her family and friends. Her memorial service will be held at MeadowBrook Baptist Church on , 16, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will precede the service for two hours. Burial will be at Bethel in Forney, AL.Martha is survived by her loving husband of 47 ½ years, James Ronald Hancock. The couple was greatly blessed in Marthas last years to have their children and grandchildren living near them and able to be with them daily: their son, James Hancock, and his wife Marivic and daughter Trinity; and their daughter, Amber Hancock Davidson, and her husband Steven and their sons Asa and Holland. Marthas siblings were also by her side as often as possible: sisters, Mary (Ronnie) Stinson of Jacksonville and Myra (Mike) Marshall of Hickory, NC and brother, Emmett (Ann) Conaway of Oxford. Martha leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. She will also be missed by her treasured friends whom she loved like family.Born in Rome, GA on 2, 1950, Martha was the second of four children born to Emmett and Cora Conaway. She grew up in rural Cherokee county and enjoyed living on the familys farm/ranch. There wasn a tree that she wouldn climb or a horse that she was afraid to ride! She was truly a daddys girl because she was the one always ready to join him for an adventure, such as zipping around on a motorcycle over (and off!) country roads.Even as an adult, Martha could turn a cartwheel as easily as the kids. And she would dance and sing and could beat anyone at Scrabble. Martha enjoyed the many family trips the extended family took to Gatlinburg, the North GA mountains , and the riverside. the death of her parents in the early 1990s, these family gatherings took on a very special meaning for Martha as it underscored how important it is for families to stay connected. She graduated from Spring Garden High School in 1968. Her favorite activity was being a cheerleader (no surprise there!). She later attended Gadsden State Community . During her working years, the two positions she enjoyed most were as Inventory Supervisor at the Tex plant in Gadsden (until it closed) and her last job, Activities director at Regency Pointe in Rainbow City. She had boundless energy and a strong work ethic, but the most rewarding aspects of her career were the lasting friendships that she formed with the people she worked with each day. She brightened their day, and they brightened hers. Martha came from a heritage of faith. Her mother, Cora, saw to it that she and the children were at church, literally, every time a service was held. As a child, Martha made her profession of faith and gave her life to Christ. She wasn perfect, but everyone who knew her saw her walk the walk. It would be hard to find anyone as caring, generous, and forgiving as Martha. Her most Christ-like characteristic was her capacity to love unconditionally. Until we meet again in heaven, we will miss her sweet spirit and the sound of her laughter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blazer Bolt for Cancer (to benefit the UAB Neuro-Onocology Unit) or Bethel Fund. Collier-Butler will direct. |
