Obituary: Robert Evan Holloway, Ph. D., a gentle and compassionate man, passed away on 23 2014 with his loving wife Christina Doyle at his side. Bob was a man of much accomplishment and many joys. One of his favorite activities was gardening, whether in Bakersfield, California or at his home and church in Rockport, Massachusetts. He loved growing and nurturing vegetables, particularly chilies, garlic and onions, and flowers, especially his beloved sunflowers. Birdsong and the light on leaves, all of nature brought him great joy. Another deep pleasure was his days hiking in the Southwest – the Grand and Havasupai Canyons, the Four Corners area, the high desert around Flagstaff; he loved it all as well as the native people who lived here. Professionally, education was always his central focus from his earliest days as a fourth grade teacher in Taliesen, Arizona, to his final academic years as a professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. In between, his career included serving as the audio-visual coordinator for Department of Defense schools on Guam, directing the S.T.A.R. grant after completing his doctorate from Syracuse University, as well as advising, teaching, and mentoring doctoral students in technology and education at Columbia Universitys Teachers . He continued this work at the for Educational Excellence at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. He was awarded professor emeritus status on his retirement from academic life. One more phase in his career followed as Director of Outreach Learning for the Kern Superintendent of Schools in Bakersfield, California. Dr. Holloways focus was to establish liaisons with institutions of higher education not locally active in order to broaden the options for learning, as well as to coordinate the options for delivery of distance learning. Throughout his career he integrated changes in technology into delivery formats from audio-visual resources to distance learning. Active in the Association for Educational and Communications Technologies, he served as President from 1991-2, completing a lengthy series of positions within this international organization. Bob loved his children and grandchildren and will be missed by his daughter Tavo Holloway and his son Poko Holloway and his wife Colleen, and grandchildren Demik, Kael, and Keely. He will be missed by his extended family Brant Tunstall and his wife Darla Sharp, Angelyn Tunstall Summers and her husband Kris Summers and grandson, Philip James (PJ) Brown. There are countless friends and former students who loved him as well and will miss his dry wit, ready smile, and warmth. Bobs greatest gift may have been his positive influence on many lives. His heroes included Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law , Mahatma Gandhi who lived peaceful resistance in his actions, and others who dedicated their lives to greater social justice for all persons. Donations may be made in his name to organizations he believed in, the Southern Poverty Law , Doctors without Borders, Compassion and Choices, and the Unitarian Universalist Association Social Justice Committee. An announcement of plans for a celebration of the life of this much loved man will be made in the near future. are by Greely , 212 Washington St. Gloucester, MA. |
