Obituary: Chebeague Island - Robert (Bob) J. Habig 97, passed away peacefully 2, 2016, at Island Commons on Chebeague Island. Bob was born 22, 1919 in Cumberland, MD, the son of Joseph and Veronica (Cook) Habig. Bob was the fifth of seven children. Bob graduated from La Salle High School in Cumberland, MD in 1939. Upon graduation, Bob spent several years working with his father, who oversaw plumbing and heating at Paxtuent Air Station. In 1944 Bob joined the army, and was deployed overseas in 1945, serving his country in the Africa and Middle East Theater during WWII. leaving the serviceBob returned to Maryland, overseeing a large federal public housing facility in Middle River of over 1200 units of for eight years until he and his family moved to Wilbraham, MA, where Bob worked as a civilian engineer for the 8th Air Force at Westover Air Force Base for twelve years. In 1968, Bob and his family moved to Chebeague Island and Bob took a job at Maine National Bank, working as a teller, head teller, and in the money room until he retired. Upon his retirement, Bob and his wife Katharine (Khaki) started a taxi service on Chebeague Island, where they serviced residents season round for over ten years. He was always active in the community, whether it was volunteer work or just lending a hand to some of the residents; he also served on the school board and the CTC board of directors. Bobs quick smile, jokes, wise comments, and willingness to help others will truly be missed by all who knew him. Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Katharine; his son, Clifford and wife Mary; grandson, Collin, stepgrandsons Robert and Daniel Hoffman; sister, Jeanne Huet, and several nieces and nephewsA celebration of Bobs life will be held , 9, 2016, at 2pm at the Chebeague Island Methodist Church 258 N. Obituary: Dr. Robert Haas, 77 Yarmouth - Dr. Robert Haas, of Yarmouth, died peacefully on 3 at Gosnell House, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. He was born on 22, 1937 in Bronx, New York the only child of Henrietta and William Haas. Dr. Haas served in the United States Army as a medic and enjoyed it very much. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1966. Dr. Haas received his DDS from the University of West Virginia, spending a year providing dental care in Virginia, before selecting Maine as his permanent practice area. His love of the ocean and sailing made Maine an attractive place to settle and begin his professional life. The summer before opening his practice in Yarmouth, Dr. Haas provided dental care for the Passamaquoddy tribe in northern Maine. Before his professional life in Maine, Dr. Haas spent summers teaching sailing at a girls camp on Cape Cod leading to his love for the Cape and especially the flats on the bay side. He and his family spent many joyful vacations on the Cape always allowing the opportunity to spend a day on the flats. Dr. Haas loved providing his patients with the smiles they desired especially the special Yarmouth children he served for many years. In recognition of his many years of service to this population the Yarmouth Council, considering his love for children and the ocean, provided interested residents of Yarmouth the opportunity to visit the Maine Maritime Museum for free. In addition to his love for the ocean and sailing and reading about Civil War history or Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Haas hobbies included restoring old sail boats and antique cars including his special 1950 MGTD and building detailed and intricate wood sailboat models of the 1800s. While he kept a few of his models most were given to friends. His love in the summer was to prepare his 27 foot sailboat, Barbara Ann, for sailing the Maine coast with his family and friends. Dr. Haas leaves behind his wife Barbara, of 50 years; a daughter, Michelle Bullerwell (husband Dwayne), grandson Hunter and granddaughters Holly and Chandelle and her daughter Avalei; his son Jonathan (wife Heidi) and granddaughter Taylor; and his daughter Katherine Dion (husband Aaron). Dr. Haas family would like to thank Maine Medical , New England Rehabilitation and the Gosnell House for the excellent and sensitive care provided Dr. Haas during his illness. Obituary: Shirley Smith Haapanen Yarmouth, Maine - Shirley Smith Haapanen, age 92, died peacefully on 15, 2014 at Brentwood . Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, she will be remembered by many as a woman whose Christian faith guided her life. She leaves a legacy of loving kindness and humility. Daughter of Ruby McIntyre Smith and Max Lee Smith, Shirley was born in Stillwater, Maine in 1922 and graduated from Newport High School. She married Weikko W. Haapanen, her high school sweetheart and love of her life, on 28, 1945. Shirley and Weikko shared 59 years of marriage together before his passing. She was a full-time homemaker and mother to Laurel, Liisa and Jon. Shirley was very active in her community and church. She served on the PTA and was a member of the American Field Service parents group in Quincy, MA. She was host mother to many exchange students. Shirley is survived by her daughters: Laurel Haapanen of Norwood, MA and Liisa Haapanen-Janelle of Chelmsford, MA; her sisters: Edith Ruta of Weymouth, MA and Mary Darville of LaGrange, GA; her sons-in-law: Rene Lopez and James Janelle; her grandsons: David Janelle, Andre Lopez, Adrian Lopez; her granddaughter Katja Janelle, and many nieces and nephews. Her son, Jon Haapanen predeceased her 2, 1982. A memorial service will be held on , 22, from 1-3 pm at Lindquist , 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, Maine. 04096.
