Joe Hill officiating. Interment will be in the Lake Providence City . Services are under the direction of Cox . Visitation will be from 4:00PM - 6:00PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Providence. Harvey Hudson Howington, Jr. of Lake Providence, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at his home on 17, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Hudson Howington Sr. and Leonie Gertrude Howington; first wife, Mary Hercus Howington; three sisters, Sue Howington Warner, Lillian Howington English, and Leonie Howington; two brothers, Mack Howington and Jamie Howington. Born in Drew, Mississippi on 5, 1922, Harvey grew up on a family farm in Lepanto, Arkansas. He was graduated from the Gulf Coast Military Academy at 16, and then from the University of Arkansas in 1943 with a B.S. in Agriculture, graduating first in his class both times. Harveys leadership qualities emerged in college where he was active in numerous military, scholastic and social organizations, including Sigma Nu fraternity, ROTC, band, and chorus, among others. college, Harvey married Mary Hercus of Hot Springs, Arkansas, immediately entering the U.S. Army where he served for 3 years, lastly as a captain. In 1949, Mary and Harvey moved to Lake Providence where they would rear their two daughters, Beatrice Lynn (1947) and Rebecca (1950). a brief time raising cattle, Harvey began a long and successful career of row crop farming in the rich soils of Waddill Plantation. Harvey was a prominent farmer who served on many boards and committees related to agriculture and the cotton farming industry, including 20 years on the state ASCS committee. He also served for 9 years on the local ASCS committee, for 24 years on the board of the Bank of Dixie, and was one of the founders of Joes Bayou Gin, still in operation today. From the mid 1960s until late in his life, Harvey was an Elder, school teacher and dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church. Beyond his academic and professional accomplishments, Harveys love of music was a celebrated joy in his life. He was an accomplished pianist, organist and clarinetist with a clear tenor voice who contributed to local TTC, choir, church and theater productions. His talent and passion for music was most vibrantly demonstrated in the 1950s when he and the Guenard brothers joined Hugo Moraras band. The snazzy combo group enjoyed great popularity and local success and shared many happy times playing clubs, receptions, proms and dances across the Louisiana and Mississippi Delta. One of Harveys most passionate projects and lasting legacies was his work on the Louisiana Cotton Museum, established in 1989. In addition to his many administrative contributions, Harvey used his skills as a master woodworker to help remodel the old farmhouse and to construct and install the pews for the old church building at the museum. . Harvey always displayed a sense of style, whether wearing work khakis, denim jeans and red suspenders, or dressed up in his tweeds and newsboy cap. He was a Renaissance man who lived a rich life filled with many interests and hobbies including golf, dancing, traveling, and amateur photography, among others. He also enjoyed the simple pleasures of regular pool games with good friends, growing summer tomatoes and birdwatching on beautiful cypress framed Lake Providence. Despite his many accomplishments, it was his dedication to family, friends and his community for which Harvey will be remembered. Rooted in a deep faith, he was a pioneer, a mentor, an artist, a man who listened more than he talked and left more to this world than he took from it. He had an untiring Howington work ethic and could still be found mowing and working in his pecan orchard even into his late 80s. Although a quiet and serious man, he loved visiting with friends and family and he was easy to smile or laugh. Mr. Harvey was a lifelong learner and a true gentleman of a bygone era. He was dearly loved and he will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank Delhi Crossroads Hospice and Jane Hill for their compassionate care in Harveys last days.
