Obituary: Walter Walt Moeller Heuer passed away at Genesis East Campus, Davenport, on , 20, 2015. Visitation will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge on , 23, 2015, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on , 24, 2015, at 11:00 am, at the church. Friends and family are invited to attend a luncheon immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow at National , Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, or to a charitable cause of the donors choice. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting www.rungemortuary.com. Walt was born on 6, 1922, in Plain View, Iowa, to Walter and Wilma Alvina (Moeller) Heuer. What a life he had! His family farmed in the Plain View and Walcott areas when he was young, and he developed a love of farming that carried through his whole life. From draft horses to tractors, he saw almost a century of progress transpire. Walt attended Davenport Schools, but it was during the Great Depression and Walt preferred earning money, so he retired from academic life in the 9th grade. However, he turned into one of the most well-read, self-educated people you could ever meet. He had a voracious ability to read vast amounts of primarily non-fiction material right up to his passing. He was blessed with common sense and was truly a barn yard philosopher extraordinaire: a man of few words, yet brilliant when he did speak. World War II interrupted his life as he served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. His primary service was with the 31st Division (Dixie Division), 167th Infantry where he saw heavy combat in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. It took him three days to walk out of the jungle when the war ended with the atomic blasts in Japan. He and his family thank President Truman to this day for saving his life with the decision to drop the atomic bombs and end the carnage. Walt was one of the kindest and yet physically toughest individuals God ever created. Upon his return from the military, he became a member of the Walcott American Legion. He married Phyllis Virginia Spalding in 1946, in Davenport, Iowa. Together, the couple had two children, Candace (Crow) and Lance. Also in 1946, Walter and Phyllis purchased a farm near Princeton, Iowa, where Walt resided until his passing. This was the start of a highly successful farming career. Walt had a green thumb but was particularly talented with raising hogs and cattle. He was an excellent mechanic and welder that could meet any task handed him. The farm was run with Germanic precision, with relentless physical and mental labor throughout all the seasons, all tempered with a great sense of humor. Walt was community-minded and served on a number of boards and committees, including Farm Service and the Scott Farm Bureau. He was also active with the Republican Party and remained a conservative patriot to the end. Unfortunately, Phyllis passed away on 5, 1991, after a lengthy illness. Walter then decided to retire from farming and leased out the land in 1993. This set the stage for what turned out to be an incredible accumulation of Golden Years. He married Ruth Mae Wendhausen Baetke in 1993. Ruths husband Wilburt (Dick) Baetke had also passed in 1991. The Baetkes were next door neighbors with their farming operation. So out came the dividing fences and on we went with one big combined family that had all grown up together anyway! Walt was a superb ballroom dancer, gardener, golfer, and loved a good card game. He was playing cards with the Long Grove senior citizens right up to the day before he died! He missed very few Chicago Cubs games on TV and enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes, too. Walt loved kids and all his family. He readily accepted step-children and extended families as his own. He was a strong role model to everyone who knew him, and he set an incredibly high bar to match. He was a man of deep faith and a dedicated member of Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; daughter, Candace; son, Lance (Sharon) Heuer; grandson, Brent (Bobbi) Mortiboy; great-grandchildren, Emily, Olivia, Matthew; and granddaughter, Darcia Mortiboy (fiancé James Laird); step-sons, Dale (Nina) Baetke and Arlen (Holly) Baetke; and step-daughter Margaret (Gerry) Belter; as well as numerous step-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. In addition to his first wife, Phyllis, Walt was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Irene (Stoefen), and brothers, Dale and Lyle. |
