Obituary: Mary Luella Babson Hilburn ("Luella"), age 92, died on 20, 2017. She was born in Ash, NC on 8, 1924, the eldest of five children of the late Walter Raleigh and Amanda Caroline Phelps Babson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, the late Stanton Henry ("Henry") Hilburn, and brothers Walter Jervie Babson and Hyton Wago Babson. Luella was a graduate of Waccamaw High School, attended one year at Southern Junior in dale, TN, and was in college when the US entered World War ll. Returning home during the war, Luella worked at Camp Davis in Holly Ridge, NC and also as a teacher at Waccamaw High School after many teachers were either drafted or left for higher-paying wartime jobs elsewhere. Luella was married to Stanton Henry Hilburn in 1943, and they had three sons. resided in Bolivia, NC until 1959. In 1959 the Hilburn family moved to Charlotte, NC where Luella worked various jobs including at CVS Drugs, Hartford Insurance, and Celanese Corporation. were active members of First Baptist Church of Charlotte and Luella and Henry were members of the Adult Choir. Luella also worked as the church secretary for a time. In 1972 Luella and Henry and their two youngest sons moved to Stone Mountain, GA and Luella went to work at the DeKalb School System, where she retired as a school secretary in 1987. Luella and Henry were active members of Smoke Rise Baptist Church since 1987 and belonged to the Searchers and the Koinonia School classes, and both were longtime members of the Smoke Rise Sanctuary Choir. Luella's many hobbies included singing, playing piano, water-skiing, and until age 91 participated in the Water Aerobics program at the Mountain Park, GA Aquatic . Luella and Henry were also longtime members of the Smoke Rise Squares square-dancing club. Luella was a loving daughter, big sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Luella is survived by her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Stan and Kay Hilburn of Angier, NC, Carl and Linda Hilburn of Stone Mountain GA, and Ron Hilburn of Conyers, GA; two grandsons and four grand-daughters, and thirteen great-grandchildren; brother William Delray Babson and wife Hilda of Zachary, LA, and sister Melva Jean Sibilia of Tarpon Springs, FL, and sisters-in-law, Mrs. Jean Hilburn of Wilmington, NC, Mrs. Hazel Babson of Winnabow, NC, Mrs. Lillian Babson of Wilmington, NC, and 16 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on , 24, 2017, from 5-8pm at Eternal Hills . Services will be at 11:00am on , 25, 2017, at Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, GA. Additional visitation will be from 1-3pm on , 27, 2017, at Coble Ward-Smith in Wilmington, NC followed by a graveside service at 3:00pm at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
