Obituary: Otto William Hayes was born 4, 1909 in the Bronx, New York. He was one of six children. He started working at the age of fourteen, fixing peoples cars. At the age of eighteen he applied for a job at the New York telephone company. He did not meet the weight requirements for this job so Ottos brother George put lead weights in his shoes and he got the job even though management looked at him rather suspiciously. One day while at a friends house he saw the love of his life, Lily Knudsen. said hello and smiled at each other and after four years of dating they married 4th, 1934. celebrated their 76th anniversary in 2010. have three children, Caroline, Virginia Ginny, and Otto Bill, Jr. and two great sons in laws, Harry and Gary and a great daughter in law, Christa, who took care of him. have four grandchildren, Chip, Mitchell (Linda), Bridget and David. Jim Moore. There are also eleven great grandchildren, Alysia, Sabrina (Fernando), Jennifer (Erich), Jimmy, Joseph (Melissa), Brittany, Brandon, Jennifer, Jazmin, Jessica and Josh, Jeremy Wells. There are also eight great-great grandchildren, Christian, Ethan, Olivia, Alexander. Logan, Skylar, Tiana and Giovani. Otto retired in 1973, and they moved to Phoenix, AZ. enjoyed retirement living by going camping, fishing and sightseeing through the country. also enjoyed all the benefits of living in retirement community, played many games of cards and bingo and socialized with the neighbors. Otto celebrated his 100th birthday in 2009, with a joyous reunion with relatives and friends coming from all over the USA and other countries to honor his 100th year. Until 2009 they still maintained their own home in Happy Trails, Surprise, AZ. Then they moved to Sun City, AZ with their son and daughter-in-law. resumed membership at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Sun City, AZ and enjoyed visiting with all their friends from church. Otto enjoyed his life. He always had a smile on his face and a rhythm in his step, a twinkle in his eye and a joke to tell. Otto, Dad, Grandpa, Grandpa 2, as he was known will be missed by all. |

Obituary: Matthew Hayes was born to Governor and Hattie Berry on 3, 1932 in Pinola, Mississippi. He was the seventh of nine children. His parents later moved the family to Lima, Ohio where he lived until the age of 16. Being an independent, hard working, and adventurous young man, Matthew decided that Chicago would be the place for him to begin his adult life. He worked at California Beverage until he was fully employed as a Longshoreman and at Inland Steel Corporation, where he retired after 43 years. During his tenure, he served his fellow employees well as the Union Steward of the 76 Inch Hot Strip (Local 1010). He was also an entrepreneur, opening and operating his own Family Restaurant and Lounge "Hayes Family Affair", for 15 years. In the summer of 1948, Matthew met the love of his life, Johnnie Ora. married on May 18, 1950 and had nine children. Denise, Mario, Darelle (Tiemeyer), Kevin (Maria), Lucille, Carla, Tyra, Robin, and Vorice (Garry). He strongly believed that faith in God and in the Lord Jesus Christ, was the only true way to raise and keep his family together. He exemplified this truth throughout his life, until he was called 24, 2015. Many lives were touched and affected by the life of this one Man, and he will truly never be forgotten. He was full of life and made sure to share his love of life, wisdom, and knowledge to the young and old. Matthew will forever live in the hearts of his family; Wife of 65 years, Johnnie "Monkey Pie" Hayes, nine children, fifteen grandchildren, (One who cared for him consistently the past 4 years, Asia), twenty-five great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; one sibling, Verdie Mae Hawkins (John Sr.), six preceding him in death; Effie, Minnie, Timothy, Ezra, Dorothy, Clementine, and Genevieve; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. |
