Obituary: FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA- Mr. Jack J. Greer 85, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, formerly of Acushnet and Salem, died , 16, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Ashland, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Benny and Beaulah (Hammock) Greer. Jack attended the Dan River Textile School and later the Dale Carnegie Institute in Boston. Jack enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Rochester and the U.S.S. Little Rock in the European and Pacific theaters. He was a life time member of both ship associations. Mr. Greer worked for the Gorin Family of the Almy, Bigelow & Washburn Chain of Department Stores in Salem and New Bedford for over 28 years. He was Assistant Manager and Buyer in the companys flagship store, Star Store at the time of his retirement. Jack was a life time member of the Knights of Columbus, Veragua Council #76 in Salem and served as Grand Knight from 1962 to 1963. During his tenure, he was responsible for the restoration of the Nathanial Silsbee Mansion and the construction of function facilities. Mr. Greer was a fourth Degree Knight and a member of the Father Bruilette Drill Assembly. He gave over 60 years of service to the Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Immaculate Conception Church and served as a CYO Swim Team Coach and Assistant Master of the Boy Scouts. His dedication to his faith called him to serve as an ordained Eucharistic Minister. Jack had been a long time resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was the loving husband of the late Barbara M. (Ruest) Greer. Devoted father of Brenda D. Elwell and her husband Richard of West Yarmouth, MA and Rotunda West Fl, Garry R. Greer and his husband Robert J. Wrubel of Charlestown and Fort Lauderdale, Fl and the late John J. Greer. Cherished grandfather of Todd, Lauren, Jared and the late Lee Greer. Loving brother of Mae Tate, Kathleen Saunders, Ruth Garrett, Samuel Gauldin and his wife Virginia and the late James J. Greer and the Late Robert B. Greer. Loving uncle and godfather of Kathy (Fabizewski) Luzinsky and Lisa (Jalbert) Chuma. Beloved Captain Jack to niece Pamela (Jalbert) Morose. Beloved by many other nieces and nephews. Brother-In-law of Beverly (Ruest) and Philip Jalbert, Linda (Ruest) and Fred Laycock, Robert Ruest and his wife Laurie and Henry Krisko. Obituary: VICE ADMIRAL HOWARD E. GREER, USN (RET) MAY 1, 1921 – NOVEMBER 22, 2015 Howard Earl Greer, Vice Admiral, USN (RET) died 22, 2015 in Coral Gables, Florida. He was born May 1, 1921 in Tyler, Texas and attended public school there until entering Tyler Junior . He received a congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign upon graduation with the class of 1944. VADM Greer served on active duty from 1943 to 1978 and accrued a total of 5,292 flight hours and 418 carrier landings. operational training in Florida, Greer served on the USS Princeton (CVL-23). He received flight training at NAS Ottumwa, NAS Corpus Christi, and NAS Miami, earning his carrier qualification in 1946. He attended the Naval War from 1953 to May 1954. Aviation Commands include Commanding Officer VF-64 (F3H) 1957—1958; Commander CVA-10 (aboard USS Shangri La) 1961—1962; Commanding Officer USS Hancock (CVA-19) 1968—1969; Chief of Naval Air Reserve Training 1969—1971; Commander, Carrier Division THREE 1972—1974; and Commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet 1975—1978. Combat Tours include WWII: USS Princeton (CVL-23); Ship’s officer in Gilbert Islands, Tarawa, Roi, Namur, Eniwetok, Palau, Guam, Saipan, Battle of Philippines Sea and Rabaul campaigns; Vietnam: four tours with Seventh Fleet 1964—1972; and Yankee Station commander (CTG-77.0) in 1972.
