Obituary: Every day this year was a celebration as May Gitles approached her 100th birthday. Ninety-nine and not 100, however, was to be the magic number. May Campion Gitles, 99, of Sanford, Florida, passed away quietly, 20, 2017, 3 months and 10 days shy of her 100th Birthday. May was born to Tony Campion and Esther Ossher, the oldest of three daughters, in Chicago, IL on May 17, 1917. With his curly black hair, this 26-year-old dad, a Catholic and native of Sicily, looked a lot like Mario Lanza, the singer and movie star. Esther was a sweet 17-year-old Jewish girl of Russian descent. As a young girl, May loved fairy tales and believed in them, too! She did find and marry her prince charming, Emanual (Manny) Gitles, on 4, 1949. had 40 years together until Manny died suddenly in 1989. May went to secretarial school after high school and had a career supporting her husband in his many successful business ventures. Together they spent four decades in the hearing aid industry, were co-owners with Manny’s nephew Gerald Gitles in Electone, Inc. and G&G Partnership. May was smart, focused and ambitious and worked into her mid 80’s. May loved to be busy with crocheting, reading, and watching basketball, golf and tennis. She loved watching her daughter, Toni, teach and deliver inspirational messages in the Central Florida community and eventually became a member of her daughter’s Toastmaster Club, Central Florida Facilitators. May and Toni recently gave an inspirational presentation on 25, 2017, titled “Looking Backward, Looking Forward.” May received a standing ovation from her club members and guests. She was thought to be the oldest Toastmaster member in District 84. She spent nearly eleven years at Atria of Lake Forest Senior Living where she made many wonderful friends and enjoyed playing, mah jongg, rummikub and poker (and winning!) May is survived by her daughter, Toni Claire Gitles, and stepdaughter, n Rohr and her children Stacie Barrentine and Rachael Krutsinger, and beloved sister, 95-year-old Margaret Mack of Niles, IL. A celebration of life remembrance will take place on , 4, 2017, from 1 pm-3 pm at Atria of Lake Forest Senior Living, located at 5433 W. State Road 46, Sanford, FL 32771.
