Obituary: Rachel Grace Colson Gilmer joyfully entered heavenly rest on 23, 2016, thus ending many years of unrelenting pain and increasing disability. Disability was difficult for her because Rachel was a doer; she loved physical activity of all kinds. As an adult she logged literally thousands of miles walking and biking the streets of her neighborhood, she ran multiple times in the Turkey Trot, and she spent many hours keeping the yard at the Gilmer residence immaculate. Growing up she played softball, volleyball, table tennis, and badminton. In college she played varsity basketball (Baylor). She was devoted to her husband Robert, whom she met in 1962 at the Midvale Baptist Church (Madison, WI) while working on a Masters degree in physical education at the University of Wisconsin. She and Robert married in of 1963, and five days later they moved to Tallahassee. She taught physical education at Quincy High. In 1969, the Gilmers moved into a new home in San Luis Ridge, and they started a family. Rachel became mother and homemaker. Rachel began her personal relationship with Jesus Christ when she accepted Him as her Savior at an early age. He was her Lord, and she was dedicated to His service. She worked in the childrens ministry at First Baptist Church of Tallahassee for some forty years, in the churchs ministry to internationals (ESL) almost that long, and she was a longtime member of the International Circle of WMU at First Baptist. Rachel was an outgoing, positive person with a ready smile. She loved people, and she related very well to children, both as a teacher and a personal friend. She was a good cook, and she maintained an orderly, organized household. She loved needlework, reading, travel, and crafts. She will be remembered for her courage, determination, grit, and she will be greatly missed by those who knew her well. Rachel was predeceased by her parents, Howard P. and Mary Wilder Colson. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert; her sons David (Brooke; Killen, AL) and Steve (Karen; Winter Park, FL.); her sister Rosemary (Tallahassee); her brother William (Barbara; Ft. Worth, TX), and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Tallahassee at 2:00 pm on , 5, 2016. Obituary: James T. Gilmer, 97, was born in Ozell, Georgia, 2, 1914, and peacefully passed from this life on May 30, 2011. In 1944, he moved from Quitman, Georgia to Tallahassee with his wife Grace and two daughters. He retired from McGowan Electric in 1977 and was also employed with Tallahassee Police Department as a School Crossing Guard. He became a fixture for 20 years at one of the crossways on Tharpe Street and always had a smile for the children. He started going to the Senior when it was initially open in 1978 and assisted with the meals and making coffee for everyone. He was involved with the seniors and enjoyed visiting with everyone and playing pool. He and Grace were previously members of the Southside Methodist Church and current members of Saint Paul United Methodist Church. James thoroughly enjoyed his fellowship with the Burleigh Law School class. He has been a very active Seminole Booster since early 1950. He and Grace attended all of the football and baseball games and even supported some of the out-of-town games. On his 96th birthday, he had the honor of throwing the first pitch of the 2010 FSU Baseball Season. He is preceded in death by his wife of 73 years Grace Gilmer of Tallahassee. He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Patsy and Eddie Hodges of Tallahassee Florida and Shirley and Marvin Moore of Crawfordville, Florida. Five grandchildren, Robert and Jimmy Hodges, Terri Spinetta, Michelle Free, and Christy Stringer; eight great-grandchildren, Reta and Boone Hodges, Amanda Taylor and Jonathan Johnson, David and Jesse Free, Morgan and Brannon Stringer. Five great-great-grandchildren, Ellie Hodges and Daylei Gwaltney, Brittney and Kyle Taylor, and Jace Free. James was preceded in death by his parents C. E. and Elizabeth Gilmer as well as nine siblings. Visitation with family and friends will be held , 2nd.from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M. at Culleys on Riggins Road. The funeral services will be held , 3rd 10:00 A.M. at Saint Pauls United Methodist Church on Meridian Road. Burial services will follow at Culleys Meadowwood Memorial Park on Timberland Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Pauls Burleigh Law School Class. are under the direction of Culleys MeadowWood in Tallahassee, Florida. |

Obituary: Hollywood Says Goodbye to Award Winning Track Coach, William Gilmartin William High Gilmartin, Jr. passed away peacefully after watching the Florida Gators beat the Georgia Bulldogs for one last time. Born in New Jersey on 11, 1923, Bill spent his formative years in the New Jersey \ Staten Island area. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Florida May (Carlson) Gilmartin. He is also survived by three children, William Gilmartin, III (Cathy) of Davie, FL, Cassie Oden (Carl) of Apopka, FL, and Shawn Gilmartin (Marcia) of Cooper City, FL. He was the proud grandfather of Jeff, Sean, Bill, Cortney, Eric and Brett. He was also pleased to welcome two and a half great grandchildren Kylee, Austin, and Cooper. William Met his wife Florida while they were both students at the University of Florida where he played football and earned a Bachelors and a few years later a Masters Degree. were married in Orlando, Florida in 1948. He became a teacher and Football coach at Orlando Senior High School. When OHS split to become two schools, Edgewater and Boone High, William was hired at Boone High School as the first head football coach in 1952. William moved his family to Hollywood in 1957 and began his teaching and coaching career at McArthur High School where he won numerous awards including the Florida State track and Field Championship in 1964. Ft. Lauderdale High School hired him as Head Track Coach of the Flying Ls in 1966. He taught and coached many successful students and athletes until 1972 when he became Dean of Students at Miramar High School. The National High School Athletic Coaches Association named him Coach of the Year in 1971. He was then inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1985. 37 years, William retired from teaching. It was 1990, and at his retirement celebration we proudly looked on as his principal and co-workers lauded him as a rue human being, reaching out and touching the lives of all his students regardless of race color or creed. In 2013 he was awarded the Jimmy Carnes Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame. He will be greatly missed; yet, we as a family rejoice in the fact that he is in a better place.
