Obituary: Lois J Gatenby passed away peacefully on 6, 2015. Lois was born in Flint, Michigan, on May 14, 1920 to William and Estella Randall. Lois grew up in Flint, graduated from Flints Central High School, and then went to work as a secretary for an insurance agency. She later worked ffor the Buick Motor as a secretary. Lois met Marcus V Gatenby, her future husband, when he came to pick up Lois and her sister, Marcella, whose car had broken down. Mark was a friend of Marcellas husband, Gene Irwin. Mark was smitten with Lois, and they began dating \ they especially enjoyed dancing. It turns out that Mark was born on the same day as Lois, and after they were married, they liked telling people they were born on the same day AND were married on the same day! Mark worked for Chevrolet Division of General Motors, but when World War II intervened, Mark was drafted into the U S Army. Lois and Mark moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where Mark was a pilot instructor, and Lois worked as a secretary for the American Red Cross. the war, the couple resumed the lives they left behind in Flint, and started a family, welcoming their first daughter, Kaye, followed by their second daughter, Jeannie. The family moved to Royal Oak, Michigan, and then Chevrolet transferred Mark and family to St Louis, Missouri. The family enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River and picnicking on its banks. In 1959, Chevrolet transferred Mark, Lois, and their daughters to Atlanta, GA, where Lois devoted her life to supporting her husbands career at Chevrolet and raising their two daughters. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop Leader. She was her daughters biggest fan, always offering encouragement and saying that they could do anything they put their minds to. Although she couldn ride a bicycle, Lois did learn how to ride a motorcycle, enjoying many happy rides in the North Georgia Mountains with Mark. Mark retired from Chevrolet, and in 1974 he and Lois moved to Tarpon Springs, Florida. Lois became active with their community newsletter and with The Pebbles, a ladies musical entertainment group who performed at nursing homes. Mark and Lois became interested in RVing and soon had their own RV (the first of several). joined a group of like-minded people who called themselves he Pink Panthers. Mark and Lois traveled the country in their RV, which included trips to Alaska, the West, all over Florida, and back and forth to Atlanta to visit their daughters and families. Mark and Lois moved to Ormond Beach, FL in 2004 to be closer to family, and they kept up an active lifestyle in their retirement home. Lois was always optimistic, never a worrier, always seeing the glass half full. She was full of life. She appreciated a good joke, a good screwdriver, and fried oysters. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Mark, her parents, and her sister, Marcella. She is survived by her daughters Kaye Holt (Allen) of Atlanta, GA and Jeannie Silvey (Tom) of Ormond Beach, FL; two grandsons, Marc (Stacey) Holt and Mike Holt; two great-grandchildren (Addison and Zane Holt); nieces Jo Torrey and Margaret Irwin; and several grand-nieces and nephews. Loiss later years were spent at Ormond in the Pines, whose nurses, CNAs, and staff took wonderful, loving care of her.
