Obituary: Eulogy for Charles E. Garb delivered by his eldest daughter Barbara Ligeti at Arlington National on 30th, 2015 Today we bury the cremated remains of Charles Edward Garb, private first class, company K, 411th division, United States Army Infantry - a proud wounded and decorated WWII veteran. And as is accorded by Arlington National , he will rest in a grave with the remains of his beloved spouse of nearly 68 years, Helen Hewitt Garb. Arlington tells us that they care for our national heroes and their families during time of need. bear witness to an American Heritage and the Military service and sacrifice of men and women in uniform. do that so well and for all of this we are eternally grateful. Arlington encourages us - written at its portals - to honor, remember and explore. Who is Charles whom we honor, remember and explore today? He was born 25th, 1925, in Bogota, Colombia, where his Dad was working for an oil company. A wild coincidence because though he left there as an infant, he would marry a woman the bulk of whose family - even her English father - were from that City and environs. Jacob Garb, his father, was a speculating businessman and his Mom, Bertha Shaifer, was a homemaker turned delicatessen magnate - but that story comes a bit later. Charles was born the Garbs returned to Germany - Berthas home - and in a few years they migrated to the United States, where Jacob had gotten his Ellis Island name as a child traveling with family from his native central Europe - mind you, details of his past and family are very sketchy and he died when I was born - leaving much mystery. the crash of 1929 while Jacob continued to pursue dreams, Bertha announced that even in a terrible economy people had to eat so she opened a delicatessen in the German Town section of New York City on the Upper East Side. Eventually she had stores in Jackson Heights and Astoria Queens and in Coco Beach and Cape Canaveral Florida. Dad helped out as a youth in all of those stores. With his own father traveling and his Mom working long hours - little Charles loved to wander around New York City. He loved to draw, read, and blessed with a beautiful singing voice and a multi-faith background - he attended services at any religious institution who would have him in a choir!! His Dad wanted him to be an engineer. Mom just wanted him to be happy and made sure that he was. Charles graduated with honors from Bronx Science High School and at 18 years of age he enlisted in the United States Army to serve his familys chosen country. During basic training he was stationed in Florida and Texas where he alternately attended classes at Rollins and Texas A&M. Then he was shipped to the European tier where he was a sniper - and he was wounded - and eventually was sent back to New York where he spent a year in rehabilitation at Halloran Hospital on Staten Island. There he had daily art classes and helped to design and appeared on the cover of their annual report. He was visited daily by a Latin beauty whom he had met in the neighborhood when he was in High School. En route to his subway stop he would pass an apartment building and stop to listen to beautiful piano recordings - or so he thought - until one day there was a stop and start rendition of Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue, so he climbed up onto a retaining wall to see who was playing and he saw this raven haired young girl and though quite shy - he was intrigued. He inquired around the neighborhood and found out that she was Anna Elena aka Helen Hewitt - attending the Mannes School of Music. Helen heard that a cute young blonde blue eyed kid who worked in the local Deli was asking about her - so she donned her finest (at 14 mind you) and marched to the Deli to buy some baloney. Charles was forced to wait on her - again - a shy 16 - so flustered that he dropped her change all over the floor. As they both collected the coins their eyes met and in that Judy Garland Mickey Rooney movie moment I and my sister Lydia were conjured - along with a lifetime of fulfilling an American Dream. WWII the two married. Dad received his Bachelors degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute - melding his interests in engineering with his love of art. Dad was an artist at heart - and after a year of working on a design team at Sperry Gyroscope he forged a fine career on Madison Avenue - first as a photographer and illustrator - and then as an art director- ultimately forming his own boutique agency - often working with industrial accounts. Back in his Pratt days - Dad shook a basinet with his ad hand in which Barbara or Bobbie as he always called me - slept - as he drafted assignments with his good right hand. He hid his physical wounds in the end better than his mental ones. Current research has revealed that WWII soldiers who lived around constant artillery explosions - and in particular the rapport of an old fashioned snipers gun at ones head - were prime to develop the kind of dementia that caused Dad to wind down - though I am convinced the he died of that broken heart that takes the surviving member of a couple with a rich, long marriage. Mom had become an educator - ultimately making the Garden Country Day School into a very profitable construct. She orchestrated her and Dads early retirement to Florida at 60 and 62 - where they lived for the last 27 years of their lives. For a long stretch their Florida home was a base and they became avid travelers. When they spent time at home - and til the last days of Moms life and til Dad became wheelchair bound - they volunteered in the local hospital system and at theatres and concert halls - and Dad pursued photography and he painted. He started a service photographing new borns for families who might not otherwise have the privilege of beautiful family portraits and albums that he created. Mom taught English to Spanish speaking immigrants, she taught dance, and she just helped people. Dad was a gentle angelic guy - an intellectual with a great sense of humor continued... |
