Obituary: Edith Fuzzy Gipstein passed away peacefully 13, 2017 at her home in New London surrounded by the love of family. She was 92. Fuzzy was born in New London on 24th, 1924 to Charles and Victoria Glassenberg. She was predeceased by her sister Bobbe and brother Albert and her husband Dr. Edward Gipstein. She is survived by her two sons: Todd and his wife Marcia, of Groton, and Richard and his wife Myra of Mystic, and their children Samuel and Sophia. There is an old conundrum: what happens when an immovable object is hit by an irresistible force? Fuzzys life provides the answer. Through the force of her will and personality she moved things that could not be moved: a sleepy museum set in its dusty ways, a hospital doing the same old fund-raiser, a college limited in the scope of its acceptable majors, travel groups content to go no further than New York City, or the sometimes limiting constraints of social norms. She prided herself on being stubborn, claiming Im a left-handed Capricorn which, apparently, means extremely stubborn. But perhaps in this she was wrong. She was not so much stubborn as determined. At an early age, she acquired the name Fuzzy, a description made by her sister Bobbe, who saw her fuzzy baby hair. She much preferred Fuzzy to her given name of Edith — which she thought sounded like a brat in some English play. Fuzzy grew up in New London. attending Williams Memorial Institute, she went to Wellesley where she majored in classical archaeology. all, she could read ancient cuneiform. She graduated with honors in 1946 and received her Masters degree in art from Connecticut in 1959. college, this strikingly beautiful young woman started to date Dr, Edward Gipstein, her familys doctor. He was 20 years older and had treated her as a child for poison ivy. Aided by a well-aimed arrow by Cupid to Eds heart, they wed in 1947. were married for 62 years. Fuzzy Gipstein was a force of nature. Her name is ironic. It implies vagueness and perhaps indecisiveness. She was neither. She knew what she wanted, and she went after it with single-minded determination. She was a visionary who long before womens lib showed a woman could be strong and independent and also a devoted mother and wife. Fuzzy was devoted to New London. As her life unfolded in her beloved hometown, everybody seemed to know her. She needed no last name, really — there was only one Fuzzy. Her legendary lectures on subjects from Pyramids to Picasso were a deft blend of information, striking visuals and colorful stories. She had a knack for bringing history and art to life and giving it relevance. A natural showman, she brought a sense of theatricality to her lectures, using music or dressing up to suit the subject. Fuzzy was petite, but when she entered a room, her beauty and her bold fashions got attention. She loved hats and turbans and striking jewelry. She was not loud nor brash, but impossible to ignore. She was fearless, in the choices she made and the risks she took. Traveling, she always wanted to see what was around the corner. It might be a road to an undiscovered neighborhood, a gracious old church, or an inspiring view. If you don turn the corner you will never know. It was a metaphor for her life, for her unquenchable curiosity and capacity for wonder. She was a lifelong student and a lifelong teacher. To travel with Fuzzy was to understand that life and cultures were, like paintings, compositions made up of big brushstrokes and tiny ones. Grand themes and fascinating details. Her love of art was infectious, and she had a remarkable ability to connect things across cultures, history, styles and religions. She was Google long be-fore computers existed — a resource of information uncanny in its breadth. Her boys often joked that a simple question asked of Mom might result in a lecture. Fuzzys devotion to her husband Ed was yet another expression of the intensity of her commitments in life. She took care of an older man whose life revolved around her. Their dance through life was a joy and an inspiration. were each others world. And together, they explored the world beyond the friendly con-fines of New London, traveling extensively in their 62 years together. For all their world travels, it was Venice, Italy that most grabbed their hearts and became a second home for them. went to Venice almost every year, usually joined by New Lon-don friends. Venice became for them a place to visit, to dream about, and to remember fondly in lifes dark days. Even at 105, Ed dreamed of going yet again to Venice. Not long before she passed away, Fuzzy called the memories of cocktail parties with New London friends on the rooftop terrace of their Venice apartment some her best. Since her husband was older and busy with a medical practice and running many facets of the L+M Hospital, she took on some of the dad stuff with characteristic gusto. She loved helping her two boys make movies, set off rockets, curate a natural history museum in their basement, keep up with the latest horror movies, work on photography projects, birdwatch or whatever two boys could conjure up to have fun and destroy a few things along the way. Her two daughters-in-law, Myra and Marcia, were the daughters she never had. In them she found two women of compassion and grace and generosity. Both found in Fuzzy a second mother who was always there for them. Fuzzy had a mothers joy of seeing her sons happily married to women she would come to love dearly. When grand-children Sam and Sophie came along, she was back at it, playing with them, showing them art, being a grandmother who was just a big kid. She never child-proofed her house. She let the continued...
