Obituary: William B Goddard was highly respected in Colorado and throughout the United States for his commitment to the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology with an emphasis in Urogynecology. While at the State University of Iowa, Dr. Goddard began his tradition of excellence in teaching and outstanding leadership. He was awarded three teaching awards in two years (1957-58), was elected Secretary of Iowa Ob/Gyn Society and was a member of the program Committee and the Scientific Exhibits Committee for ACOG. He attained the rank of Associate Professor before coming to Denver. Dr. Goddard was recruited to Denver in 1961 to become Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Denver General Hospital \ now known as Denver , and joined the clinical faculty at the University of Colorado in 1963. In 1966 he joined the well-regarded private practice of Red Rocks Ob/Gyn and was active on the staffs of Metro Denver Hospitals, Beth Israel, Lutheran and St. Anthonys.He was instrumental in promoting the adoption of laparoscopy, ultrasound, and advanced fetal monitoring techniques. Dr. Goddard trained over 400 residents and innumerable medical students over the course of his distinguished career. Whether looming over an OR table or philosophizing over a pint of beer, Dr. Goddards greatest specialty was teaching others to become outstanding physicians. Always a leader, Dr. Goddard has served on numerous committees of the American of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and is past President of the Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Goddard was a member of the Central Travel Club of OB/GYNs. He was a founding member and past president of the society now known as The Society for Humanism in Medicine. He also served for many years as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has donated many hours of committee service to the organization. He is also a past president of the Continental Gynecologic Society and the Colorado Gynecologic and Obstetric Society. He founded the informal Metabolic Bone Disease Society of Colorado. With Harvey Cohen M.D., he founded the Vail Obstetrics and Gynecology Conference originally supported by Beth Israel Hospital. Thirty-four years later, the highly successful Vail Obstetrics and Gynecology Conference is offered through the University of Colorados Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, attracting about 150 registrants from across the country. Dr. Goddards 12 peer-reviewed publications reflect interests ranging from fetal bradycardia to gravitational placentography (JAMA, 1961), and include the first double- blinded, randomized trial in the obstetric literature, coauthored with Dr. Roy Pitkin (Paracervical and uterosacral block in obstetrics-a controlled, double-blind Study. Obstet Gynecol 1963; 21:737) and listed as one of the 5 most notable articles published by the Green Journal. Dr. Goddard was born in Oklahoma City and raised in Kentucky, Dr. Goddard migrated through New Jersey (chemistry major at Princeton), Pennsylvania (University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine), Iowa (State University of Iowa), where he joined the faculty after completing his military service. Dr. Goddards Air Force career led him to the title of Captain, as he flew from Washington (Spokane), to the Philippines (Clark AFB) and then to Texas (School of Aviation Medicine in San Antonio. Dr. Goddard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frankie and is survived by 4 children \ twin daughters Susan and Jo Anna, both attorneys practicing estate and trust law (Goddard and Goddard in Denver, Colorado); Margaret Rose (Peggy), a teacher in a Montessori school founded by her and her husband in Versailles, Kentucky; and Norman who is an engineer for Chevron in Houston, TX . He has 8 grandchildren.
