Nita Jean Wagner (Grapes) was born on 16, 1930, the third of five children born to George Leroy Roy Wagner and Hazel Barnetta (Ball) Wagner. She was raised on Mud Hill in Wirt , West Virginia and grew up during the Great Depression, and learned to give to others who were in need even though her family had very little as well. She was an avid admirer of Franklin D. Roosevelt her entire life as a result of that experience, but her favorite president was Thomas Jefferson. She began her work life at the age of fifteen, traveling to Parkersburg to work at the Wilmar Cafeteria during her summer break from school. She graduated from Wirt High School and in 1948 she married David G. Grapes (1930-2010). She became the first female real estate broker in Wood , one of her many firsts. At the time she entered the real estate business, it was dominated by men. Eventually, in 1966, she opened her office in South Parkersburg on Pike Street where she went to work at South Parkersburg Realty each and every day until 6, 2016. She liked to say that she would work until she couldn find her office any more. She thrived in her profession, and was wel¬l known, loved and revered in her Southside community. Jean Grapes was a lifelong, ardent Democrat who loved politics. her first unsuccessful attempt at running for public office, in 1990 she was elected as Wood Commissioner, the first and to date, only woman ever elected to that position. During her tenure, Jean spearheaded the effort to secure an in lieu of tax agreement that made the Belleville Hydroelectric Plant a reality while guaranteeing revenue flow for the governmental entities and schools. This venture brought millions of dollars to Wood . serving one term on the Wood Commission, she remained a force in Wood Democratic politics, serving as Executive Director of the Wood Democrat Executive Committee for nearly twenty years. She also served on the West Virginia Executive Committee for twelve years. She served on the Board of Directors for House to for over ten years. She was a founding board member for the Scottish & Celtic Heritage Festival.
