Obituary: Sylvia M. Gummersall (Nixon), 77, was born in Steubinville, Ohio. As an Army Brat, she followed her father from Fort Dix, NJ to Bremerhaven, Germany to Fort Monmouth, NJ. Having turned 21 when her father was transferred to Japan, she had to stay behind. She met and married 1st Lt. Frank R (Bob) Gummersall who was also stationed at Ft. Monmouth. The next stop was Idaho Falls, Idaho where Bob worked as a nuclear engineer. His job took them to Phoenix, AZ, Canoga Park, CA, San Jose, CA and finally Mercer Island in 1967. She was the consummate maker and devoted wife. She influenced almost everyone she met with quiet, loving attention and shining example. As active members of St. Monica Catholic Parish, they enjoyed the island and an active life of service. She is survived by three children (Kim, Karen, and Bryan), four Grandchildren (Jason, Lindsey, Josh, and Sean). three sisters; Dorty Britt from Dallas, Barbara Shannon (Mercer Island) and Jackie McNaughton from New Jersey, and her devoted husband of over 53 years Bob. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass in Sylvias honor on , 7, 2011 at 10:00 am, at St Monica Catholic Parish, 4301 88th Ave SE, Mercer Island, Washington 98040. under the direction of Sunset Hills , Bellevue, Washington. Eulogy for My Mother, Sylvia Gummersall 7, 2011 My Mother, Sylvia Gummersall was born with these three gifts from God: Faith, Hope, and Love. Her faith was innocent, childlike, unwavering, sincere, and mature Her hope was unfailing, optimistic, encouraging, easily shared, and tenacious Her love was nurturing, comforting, gentle, unconditional, and fierce. These three gifts helped shape her personality and assisted her to navigate through the pathway of her life. My Mom had a sunny, optimistic, joyful disposition, with a natural goodness that flowed through her. She had a well-developed sense of conscience that would not let her stray from what was right. She was friendly and inviting to those she met and always a good listener. She used to tell me to find a good friend you need to be a good friend. She always showed a genuine interest in others and also in their soul. She wasn afraid to ask if you believe in God. The central themes of importance in my Moms life were faith, marriage, family, and friends. Sylvia grew up as the 2nd girl of 5 girls born to her father Paul Hunter Nixon. At 4 ½ years old her mother Mary Binciewicz was no longer able to care for her and she and her older sister Barbara lived for a time with their Polish grandmother, then in an orphanage for about 6 months. Her father then remarried Mary Eley and they had 3 more girls, Jackie, Dorty, and Debbie. Dorty, Sylvias sister says she was a Born Mother. She looked after everyone in the family including her stepmother, making sure everyone got along and had what they needed. Things were tight financially in the family. Mom remembers asking neighbors for bread, and avoiding bill collectors on the phone. Hence her frugal nature came forward. She learned not to buy anything until she saved and had the money in hand. My Mom had a special fondness for her older sister Barbara. She would go visit her every year and help to straighten out her finances and get her organized. This led to Barbara coming out from Maryland to Mercer Island when she retired to be near to my Mom and Dad. When she became invalid my sister cared for Barbara in her home for 1 ½ years and then they moved her to the Mercer Island , where my mother would go and visit her everyday and bring a treat. My Dad will carry on this tradition in Moms absence. Sylvias faith formation in the Catholic Church began with her Polish grandmother and continued with her stepmother Mary, who made sure she attended church and catechism, and received the sacraments and Holy Communion. She always had a deep abiding love of Jesus and a strong convicted faith. Mom experienced some of her first health challenges in childhood with polio in her legs, a tendency to sleep walking on cold snowy nights, and a bout of Bronchiactisis in her early 20s. She faced these challenges with optimism and a smile always trying to do her best to get well. She met my Dad, Frank Robert Gummersall, (Bob) at 23 and they married in 1957. I asked my Mom how she knew that Dad was the one. She said God told her Bob was the one and guided her in the right direction. Of my Dad she said Hes my whole life, he stood by me through all my illnesses, took care of the children, held a good job so I could be home with the kids, cleaned and cared for the house. He is a brilliant man who shares his talents with everyone. Ive watched him grow leaps and bounds. Every year when new things happened and tough times occurred we faced them together with faith and courage, and we are up to date with all thats happened. My parents married in Fort Monmouth New Jersey on the 13, 1957. headed straight for Pocatello, Idaho for their honeymoon in the dead of winter to meet Dads parents who threw a big party for Mom and she won them over with her sweet personality. It wasn easy as they were Mormon and she was Catholic. tried to convert her, but her faith was strong. Eventually, Dad and Mom had their marriage blessed in the church and my Dad converted to Catholicism. We have all been blessed to witness the steadfast, cherished, constant love, centered and grounded in faith that my Mom and Dad have for each other. Children began arriving continued... |

Obituary: Joyce Darlene Gumm 6/22/1943 - 3/13/2017 Born to Walter and Cordie Tiegs, Joyce was the middle of three children, Keith, and Karen respectively. Joyce grew up in Wilbur, WA. She loved living on the farm. She loved taking care of the calves. She also spent a lot of time with her Dad taking care of things around the farm. She shared many stories of the adventures of her childhood. One of our favorites is when she hypnotized her Mother's chickens. She got them dizzy and then tucked their heads under their wings. The chickens just laid there still as could be. Joyce ran into the kitchen saying the chickens are dead! Her Mother, Cordie, loved her chickens and could not imagine what had happened. Joyce decided to let her Mom see the chickens were fine and she gently nudged them and one by one they popped their heads up and waddled off just fine as could be. Joyce went to nursing school after she graduated. She greatly enjoyed taking care of others. She was always quick to share her smile and ease all those she came into contact with. While working as a nurse in Odessa, WA she met her husband, Charlie Gumm. were married on 28, 1968. moved often as the Army had their own plans. Charlie and Joyce had two daughters, Peggy and Twila. Charlie retired from the Army they moved to Spokane, WA in 1978. bought a house and Joyce was a homemaker. She was a room mother at school, Blue Bird Leader, PTA Board member, Cheerleader and whatever else was asked of her. She was supportive of all of us and was eager to encourage us and share in our success. Joyce loved everything she did and made all those around her feel better. Joyce was willing to try new things to help support her family. She made and sold a myriad of things over the years, ultimately using the business name of Gumm Drops Etc. Tri-Chem, which opened up many opportunities to create and learn colors other than what came in our Crayola box. She did Bazaars where she sold things that both she and Charlie made. She loved coming up with new things to make and sell. She had a very successful candy making business that allowed her to meet many fun and new people. I know there are more than I am able to recall at the moment... Joyce was always up for an adventure. She enjoyed travelling. She never met a stranger no matter where she was. She was quick to share a story or some interesting tidbit with anyone. Charlie and Joyce had many journeys and enjoyed being together looking at the countryside. liked finding new food places and sharing their travels with others. One of the best trips we were able to go on was the Disney Alaskan Cruise. She loved seeing the icebergs, seals during birthing season, and whatever else that was available to be done. Our servers made her feel like a Queen and she loved checking in with them about all we had done each day. She loved going to family reunions and high school get-togethers. She was always up for whatever was planned, always a great attitude! One of her greatest joys was her granddaughter, Megan. She taught Megan so very much! Some of what they did together was crafting, tweaking recipes, and cooking (Megan learned how to work with a knife with safety and confidence.) Joyce loved being a doting Nana and supporting Megan in all of her events. Nana would bring cookies for Megan and her teammates when they had a game. She was Megan's biggest cheerleader. Joyce will be remembered as a wonderful Daughter a terrific Sister, a loving Wife, and true Friend, a supportive Mother, and a doting Grandmother. We will miss her bright smile! We Love You |
