Obituary: Joyce Ackley Gillie passed away 27 at her home in Tumwater, Washington. She was just about celebrated her 92nd birthday. Joyce was born , 1925 in North Bend, Washington to Julian and Signa Ackley. Shortly after her birth her family moved to Bellingham, Washington. She graduated from Bellingham High and then what is now known as Western Washington University in 1946. Joyce worked in public education in Olympia School District for 42 years. Joyces public school career touched the lives of at least three generations of Olympia students. She served as principal of Lincoln, Roosevelt, McLane, and Garfield Elementary Schools. Joyce remembered many of her students and enjoyed seeing them around town and reading about their accomplishments in the newspaper. Dedicated to improving her community and profession, Joyce was active in several community and professional organizations. Many of which she remained active in after her retirement from education. She worked as a hostess at Nickelbees Restaurant in Tumwater. She was active in the Thurston Democratic Party and the Thurston Democratic Womens Club. She was the one the first con-chairs of the Demoburger booth at Lakefair. Joyce was an active member of Zonta, a professional and businesswomens organization. She worked at the Zonta German Sausage booth at Lakefair since 1977. She was a volunteer usher at the Washington for the Performing Arts. Joyce was a founding board member of the Child Action Council. A longtime member of the First Christian Church in Olympia, Joyce also involved with the Washington State School Retirees Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, The Order of the Eastern Star, United Way of Thurston , and Olympia Junior Programs. She was honored in 2011 as the first woman to serve Grand Marshall for Lakefair. Joyce was precede in death by her parents, her brother, W. Dale Ackley, and her husband, Paul Gillie. She is survived by three step-children, Jim (Rose) Gillie, Yakima, Arlene (Robert) Williams, Sammamish, Tim (Jenine) Gillie, and Tooele, Utah. She is also survived by three nephews, Steve (Marcia) Gillie of Holton, Kansas, Bryan (Melody) Ackley, and Michael (Lynda Lewis) Ackley, both of Burlingame, California. A Celebration of Life for Joyce will be held on , 11, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the First Christian Church, Olympia, WA 98512. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to www.zonta.org. |
