Obituary: Carmel Alice Guida (née Lizzi)

A native Washingtonian, Carmel passed away peacefully on 26, 2016 at the age of 90 at Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, Virginia. She survived her husband Major Anthony Guida, U.S. Air Force Retired, and her son Paul Guida. She is survived by her four children, James Guida, Marie Cavanaugh, Regina Stone and George Guida. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Nicole Cavanaugh, Erin Hutchins, Katie Johnson, Anthony Guida, George Guida, Angela Stone, Matthew Stone and one great grandchild, Cole Johnson.

Carmels parents emigrated to the U.S. from Foggia, Italy in the 1920s with one son, Joseph, and later raised seven other children in Washington D.C. (Rose, Louise, Carmel, Alfred, Adeline, Antoinette, and Eleanor). Carmels father, Michael, owned Lizzi Construction and proudly built a large stone house for his family of ten.

In her earlier years, Carmel worked as a stenographer for the Department of State. She was the secretary to the Chairman of the Translating Division. One of her most proud moments was when she was asked to attend the opening of the United Nations Conference at Dumbarton Oaks in 1944 as part of the Secretariat staff.

Many years later, in the 1960s, she worked as the secretary to the Chairman of the Physics Department at Georgetown University.

Carmel met her husband Tony while working in the Translating Division at the Department of State. She was introduced to him through Tonys former Portuguese professor from Temple University, who at the time, was working as the Chairman of the Portuguese Division. Carmel and Tony married on 22, 1946 in Washington D.C. Soon afterwards, Tony was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. Other assignments throughout their married life included: Sacramento, California, Tampa, Florida, Hampton, Virginia and Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany.

obtaining his PhD in History and retiring from the Air Force in 1962, Tony and Carmel moved their family to Rome, Italy so that Tony could start his civilian career as a History professor at Notre Dame International School. The Guida's enjoyed five years of traveling extensively throughout Europe. Carmel learned to speak Italian fluently, enjoyed the arts, music, food, and visited her parents hometown in Troia. The Guida's fondly remember being chosen as extras in the films "To Catch a Fox" and "Cast a Giant Shadow" filmed at CineCitta Studios in Rome.

returning home with her family to Virginia in 1967, Carmel became very involved as a member of the Queen of the Americas Guild. Their mission is to foster awareness and devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe as Mother of the Americas through education, prayer and pilgrimage. Carmel also devoted much of her time serving as a lector at military funerals at Ft. Myer, Virginia. Carmel and Tony lived their Catholic faith by dedicating many years as servants of the St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer Society, where they were witnesses at burial services for those without survivors.

Tonys death in 1991, one of Carmels favorite pastimes was playing bingo. She thoroughly enjoyed the weekly tradition and was often seen playing ten cards at once. Shortly after, she established a network of Bingo friends. Throughout her life, Carmel enjoyed cooking and gardening. One could find her either in the kitchen making spaghetti and meatballs, or in her garden.

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Queen of the Americas Guild: http://queenoftheamericasguild.org/donate/ or Queen of Americas Guild, 311 Kautz Rd., St. Charles, IL 60174.
