Obituary: Garland Mason Gay died 16, 2016 at the age of 91, or as he preferred to say 100 minus 9!. He was born in Lynchburg 24, 1925 to Samuel Rufus and Beatrice Mason Gay. He was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School, The University of Virginia and the UVA School of Architecture. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a pilot. In 1947 he married the love of his life, Margaret Douglas Meriwether. Garland was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Peggy and his 2 brothers, Samuel R. Gay, Jr and Henry Hamner Gay. He is survived by his 3 devoted children, Elizabeth H. Gay, Garland M. Gay, Jr. (wife, MayMay) and William M. Gay; 7 grandchildren, Elizabeth G. MacGaw (Scott), Lucy G. Geoghegan (Oliver), Margaret G. Young, (Spencer), William Garland Gay, Samuel H. Gay, Jane J. Gay, Garland M. Ramey- Gay, and 7 great grandchildren. Upon finishing his education at UVA, Garland opened his own architectural firm in Lynchburg, Garland M. Gay & Associates. He designed many significant homes, churches, schools and other buildings in central VA. His firm, now known as Architectural Partners, is ongoing and thriving. In retirement, Garland and Peggy spent Spring and Fall at their home in Duck, NC on the Outer Banks. Even though he was an accomplished fisherman himself, he spent most of his time bringing bait and lunch to Peggy. As much as he loved the beaches of North Carolina, he loved the mountains of Virginia even more. The familys mountain top home on the Blue Ridge Parkway was an endless source of joy for him. His encyclopedic knowledge of trees and his love and appreciation of nature and the outdoors were boundless. Garland fashioned a full white beard and sweat pants in his last 20 years. He mostly enjoyed the simple things in life such as driving to his favorite spot to watch trains, which were another of his lifelong loves, and also feeding the feral cats along the train tracks. He enjoyed spending a afternoon with his family at their house on the mountain as well as sunset chats on the front porch with his fun-loving Heritage neighbors. He will be lovingly remembered by those whose lives he touched. A graveside service celebrating Garlands life will be held 20, 2016 at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11 AM. A reception will follow at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Garland and MayMay Gay (3611 Manton Drive). In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial gift to the Lynchburg Humane Society or The Academy of Fine Arts. |

Obituary: GAY, Faye Anita, 83, of Henrico, passed away 9, 2016. Her greatest joys as a homemaker were sewing, cooking, and gardening. She was also an animal lover, and especially cared for her dog Misty, and her birds, Sierra and Ceasar. Obituary: On 18, 2014, Mrs. Dorothy Rankin Gay, beloved wife of the late Commander Harold M. Gay, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. What a blessing to spend Christmas Day with Jesus and her loving husband she has missed for 25 years. Born in Burkburnet, Texas on 10, 1913 to Edward Johnston Rankin and Rose Olive Beedy Rankin, Mrs. Gay was the wonderful mother of four children, beloved grandmother of 16, fascinating great-grandmother 37 and very involved great-great-grandmother of 6. An accomplished musician, Mrs. Gay was the Concert Mistress for the Oklahoma City Symphony at age 12. She began her love for the violin as she sat on her daddys lap and put her fingers on his fingers as he played. Her many relatives delighted in helping her play Pop Goes the Weasel on her violin because she would let them pop the string during the song \ which always created great merriment and fascination for the children and a life-long love of music. Mrs. Gay completed her Bachelors Degree in Education at Central State in Edmond, Oklahoma, her Masters Degree in Latin at University, and all of her coursework for her Doctorate Degree. A respected teacher for 39 years, she taught Latin, French, Music and Mathematics in the public schools in Oklahoma, as well as locations where her husbands Navy career took them. A spirited University of Oklahoma Football fan, she never tired of watching and cheering on her beloved Sooners. Mrs. Gays children include: Harold M. Gay, Jr. of Norman, Oklahoma; James N. Gay of Wichita Falls, Texas; Mrs. Carolyn Smith of Culpeper, Virginia; and, Mrs. Marilyn Sloan of Tulsa, Oklahoma. An active member of the First Baptist Church of Norman, Oklahoma for over 60 years, she was the last surviving member of the Dorcus School Class, which had been together for decades. For her 100th birthday, people who came from across the country to celebrate this exceptional woman and her life. She was surrounded by her family, life-long friends, her church family. She is preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, two sisters and one brother, and two great grandchildren. Services will be held 11:00 am , 30, 2014 at the Primrose chapel, with burial next to her husband of 48 years in Shawnee, Oklahoma. |
