Obituary: Rosina Guyder, age 97, passed away 1, 2014. At the request of Rosina, her remains will be accompanied by her son and grandchildren to her beloved hometown of Marksville, Louisiana. Her ashes will be returned to that familiar earth during an intimate ceremony with her immediate family. Rosina was born on 8, 1917, to Dolly Deselle Richardson and Willie Richardson. Along with her older sister Dorothy and her younger sister Irene, she was educated in Catholic school at the local convent until high school graduation. She was afforded the opportunity to have a college education and took classes at both Houston Colored Junior (now named Texas Southern University) and Prairie View A & M University. She worked for many years as a book keeper, but had a true passion for sociology, anthropology, and religious studies. Her travels mirrored her passions as she visited many parts of Africa and the Middle East. Well before her time, she immersed herself in yoga, meditation, and healthy eating habits. Rosina was a woman of independence and curiosity who was much loved by family and friends. Always energetic and astute, she will be missed by many. Rosina is survived by son Raymond E Johnson, III, two grandchildren Alfred “Chip” Johnson and Donna Johnson Harvey, grandchildren Bryce Johnson, Guyton Patrick Harvey, II, Kendall Johnson, and Clare Harvey. She also leaves special family members Donna Patricia Johnson, Dawn Johnson, Guyton Harvey Sr. and a host of cousins and family friends. |

Obituary: Valaree Commander Guy died on 14, 2014 at Emeritus at Spicewood Springs skilled nursing in Austin, Texas. The daughter of Boyd U. and Edna V. (nee Helge) Commander, she was born near Brady, Texas on 3, 1919. graduating from Brady High School as valedictorian in 1936 at the age of 16, she attended Southwest Texas State Teachers (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas. She earned her bachelors degree in English in May, 1939 and her Masters degree in English in May, 1941. Starting in the fall of 1940, Valaree taught three semesters of high school English and Spanish in La Marque, Texas. In 1941 she resigned her teaching position to marry William T. (Bill) Guy, Jr., her high school sweetheart from Brady, Texas. the wedding she and Bill drove to Philadelphia where he had been working for Westinghouse. When Bill was called into the army as a commissioned officer from Texas A&M, they moved to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where Bill served in the Corps of Engineers for over four years. Their first son Paul was born in St. Louis in 1945. In 1948 Valaree and Bill moved to Austin so he could attend graduate school at The University of Texas because he wanted to be a mathematics teacher. Second son Gary was born in Austin in 1948. Bill earned his Masters degree, the family moved to Pasadena, California where he received his PhD in mathematics from California Institute of Technology in of 1951. The family then returned to Austin where he began his 60-year teaching career at The University of Texas in the summer of 1951. Once back in Austin, Valaree settled into life as a devoted wife and mother. Third son Greg was born in 1952. With loving care she nurtured her sons and supported her husband in his teaching career. Her other interests throughout the years were writing, cooking, sewing, and attending church with Bill. Valaree was a prolific letter writer to her family. Her letters were not only newsy, but also interesting and encouraging. She wrote her mother every week and her sister and sons almost as often. Her birthday and anniversary letters were always sweet and uplifting, they included the good characteristics of the person, and they told how much she loved them. She used her typewriter to create verbal snapshots of her family the way others take snapshots with a camera. Valaree was also a wonderful from scratch cook. Her four boys (including her husband) looked forward to all she cooked, especially whole wheat bread, two cheese macaroni and cheese casserole, oatmeal cookies, and pecan pie with twice as many pecans as the recipe called for. She once commented to a son that sewing was what she enjoyed most doing for fun. She made many of her own clothes and most of the curtains in her house. As a longtime member of Hyde Park Baptist church, Valaree was active in church life. She and Bill faithfully attended twice on and on evening. For many years she transcribed Dr. Ralph Smiths sermons to provide a typed record of them as they were preached. She deeply enjoyed her friendships in the Mary Ruth school class. Hallmarks of her life were a loving heart, courage, perseverance, and faith in God. She thought of her family members above herself, even when she was sick. Valaree Guy laid down her life for her family. We will all miss her sweet kindness, her friendly smile, and her love. Preceding her in death was her husband of 69 years, William T. Guy, Jr. She is survived by her three sons Paul Guy and his wife Heidi of Chico, California, Gary Guy of Austin, and Greg Guy and his wife Cynthia also of Austin; grandchildren Joel Guy, Heather Troth, Kevin Guy, and David Guy; six great grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on , 21, 2014 in the Chapel of Weed-Corley-Fish , 3125 North Lamar. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park. |

Obituary: Truett Dean Guy, 82 died on 15, 2010 in The Woodlands, Texas. He was born on 30, 1928 in Gorman, Texas to Otis and Ruby Guy, both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from Carbon High School and received Associate of Arts degree in Electrical Engineering from Ranger Junior and later served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He married Roberta Toby Guy on 11, 1956 who preceded him in death in 2005.
