Obituary: Our loving father and devoted husband Larry Don Greenway, M.D. departed this world on 14, 2013 surrounded by family in blessed peace.
Don was born on 1, 1936 in Hamlin, Texas. While working on a pipeline in Odessa, Texas, an epiphany led him to pursue college ambitions at Southern Methodist University followed by his medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Upon graduation in 1961, Don pursued an internship at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia followed by an orthopedic surgery residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Launched from a life of possible obscurity to one marked by tremendous accomplishments, Don was blessed to be a physician, using his God-given talents to their greatest extent in service to those in need of exemplary medical care. Prior to his entry into the private sector, Don served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force at the 7520th USAF Hospital in London, England. With recent trips aboard antique planes, his shared interest and love of military aircraft will be sorely missed.
Don joined the Austin Bone and Joint Clinic upon settling in Austin, Texas and remained a valued and popular member of the practice until his death. Spanning more than fifty years, Dons remarkable career as an orthopedic surgeon would be considered a singular feat. During this time, he served as President of the Medical Staff at St. Davids Hospital, Chief of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at both Brackenridge and St. Davids Hospitals, President of the Medical Staff at St. Davids Rehabilitation , and President of the Board of Trustees of the Travis Medical Society Blood and Tissue . In addition to his professional success, Don always demonstrated kindness and humility, traits born of his west Texas roots. Never losing sight of the sheer wonder and joy of his work, he loved practicing medicine and, in the end, only illness could take him away from the work he so cherished.
Even so, Dons first and most enduring love was not medicine, but his wife of 51 years, Anne Greenway. Meeting on a blind date in 1963, theirs was a partnership marked until the very end by respect, devotion, a sense of fun, and above all abiding love. Don never failed to be the perfect gentleman toward his beloved Anne and in turn she never failed to dote upon and support him. loved to dance and maintained a social calendar at which the younger generation marveled on a regular basis. Don and Anne were quite the team and set a great example for the entire family. We are truly thankful and blessed to have born witness to this remarkable marriage.
Don was also a devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed seeing the accomplishments of his children and reveling in the grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as Big Daddy. An only child himself, Don appreciated his large family and never missed an opportunity to begin family dinners with a story of his travels or distant relatives he wished us not to forget. He would often pass around pictures, maps, or other visual aids to assist in his story telling and all listened with rapt attention. We will greatly miss Big Daddys stories and hope to share memories of him with our own families in the future.
Don leaves behind his wife, Anne Greenway; three children, John, Jenifer, James Greenway; daughters-in-law Suzanne and Virginia Greenway; and five grandchildren, Taylor, Thomas, Ashleigh, Grace, and Fletcher Greenway. He also leaves behind dear friends, colleagues and a lifetimes worth of adoring and grateful patients. The family wishes to thank the many fans, with special recognition for Hospice Austin and the Hope Group, that provided love, support and blessings during Dons illness and in the wake of his passing. To our beloved father and husband, to the devoted doctor, intrepid traveler, astute tennis player, avid outdoorsman, and consummate gentleman, we wish you peace and give you thanks. With our time cut short, we love and miss you more than words express.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on , 18th at Weed-Corley-Fish on North Lamar in Austin. A memorial service will be held on , 19th, 11:00 am, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3208 Exposition Boulevard in Austin.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Austin Symphony Orchestra Society, 1101 Red River, Austin, TX 78701 or the Shade Project, www.theshadeproject.org, a local non-profit dedicated to the prevention of skin cancer through education, outreach and building shade structures where children play.
