Obituary: Lura Violet Green was born on 22, 1914 in Mangum, Oklahoma. She passed away at Charleton Methodist Hospital in Dallas, TX on 14, 2014, at the age of 99, three months shy of her 100th birthday. Violet, more often known as “Vi”, was preceded by her husband of 54 years, Frank C. Green; her father, Oris Wright; mother, Minnie Wright Reeves, step-father Alva Reeves; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Cleon Bell, and brother Don O. Wright. Also preceding her are her son, Billy Don Coplin, two granddaughters, Gail Coplin Bonser, and Vicky Coplin Foster, and grandson, Stephen P. Farley. Those surviving her are daughter, Dolores Green Long of Colfax, LA; son, Daniel F. Green and wife Linda of Lancaster, TX, and daughter-in-law Thelma Coplin of Mesquite, TX; grandchildren Terry Coplin, Wesley Brown, David Farley, Michael Long, and Frances Green Carson, and sister-in-law Floye Wright. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. For over a year Violet’s primary caretaker has been Ann Harney who shall forever be considered an honorary member of Violet’s family because of the love and patience she provided. As the seasons of our lives bring both good times and bad, Violet lived through each with hard work, self-discipline, and determination of steel. As a young teen during the depression she baby-sat and cleaned the house for a neighbor whose husband had a job in the film industry of Hollywood. She learned early the value of hard work and the satisfaction of making a dollar by your own labors. She had a competitive spirit that compelled her as a young mother who lived outside Paris, TX to strive to be declared the one who picked the most cotton at the weigh-in at the end of a long day. Often she won that award that brought not only a bonus in pay but the satisfaction of beating all the men who gave her a hard time about being so short (5’1”). She did this all the while caring for her toddler son, Billy, and even dragging him along on a cotton sack while he napped and she continued to pick. Later, she joined other family members in California building airplanes at a defense plant during World War II. When she found herself on her own and solely responsible for a teen-aged son in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she began working in a laundry. She often told the story that she was hired to take the place of a young girl who had resigned to go and make her fortune as a singer. That girl’s name was Patti Page. Vi told her boss there was no danger of the same thing happening with her since she couldn’t sing a note. Instead, she met a handsome man by the name of Frank from Dallas and resigned from the laundry when they married on 6, 1952. She moved to Dallas to begin life with Frank and shortly after they were joined by Billy, 17 and Frank’s children, Dolores, ten, and Danny, seven. bought their first house and the five of them moved to the Oak Cliff section of Dallas where Vi went to work making certain it was the cleanest house with the prettiest yard in the block. She was an excellent cook and eventually dinner at Granny’s and Poppa’s became a tradition after the kids grew up and married and had kids of their own. Life was good and much easier than picking cotton. When asked why she didn’t have a garden in the back yard, especially since she liked working in the yard so much, she replied that she swore to herself many years before that if she could find any way to accomplish it, there were two things she would never do again – the first was pick cotton and the second was have to grow a garden. And she never did. Eventually Frank retired and they planned to do a little traveling. But they found themselves sharing the care of Violet’s mother, Minnie, with her sister, Mildred. Minnie’s death, Frank’s cousin needed care so they moved her into their home until she passed away. Then Frank’s health became a factor along with the failure of Vi’s eyesight. So the plans to travel were shelved and even with limited eyesight, she set about taking care of Frank. Life was still good, but it was becoming a little harder and she met it head on. Frank’s death in 2005, Violet’s ability to take care of herself became limited but she was determined to live in her own house – and alone. When it was suggested she make some changes in her living arrangements because of the possibility of falling and someone finding her dead in the floor, she replied that everyone just needed to relax because they would know that she died happy – in her own house, taking care of herself. Those who pushed the issue were met with what can best be described as wrath! But in 2010, she was riding with Billy and Thelma when the car Billy was driving was struck by a drunk driver. Billy was killed and Thelma and Violet were badly injured, both requiring a long period of recovery. She was eventually able to return to her home with someone there to help her, but she didn’t like the idea and often said she felt useless and inadequate because she had to rely on others. Although she was well aware of the death of her son, dementia clouded her mind enough to protect her somewhat from the deep grief that normally accompanies such a terrible loss. But once again, life was hard and the day finally came when she could no longer stay at home. Once again, the dementia clouded the issue somewhat and made the transition to a nursing home easier. When it was time to go, she slipped away quietly and peacefully and we, her family, are very grateful to the Lord for the mercy and grace that continued... |
