Obituary: Dr. Joseph Martin Graham, who taught philosophy for forty-two years at the University of St. Thomas, was a founding father of the Pro-Life movement and current president of Texas Right to Life, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and mentor, died peacefully in his sleep at home in Houston on 22nd at the age of 88. Few, if any, professors have made as major contribution to the University of St. Thomas and to the Catholic Church as Dr. Joseph Graham. He taught and inspired his students in the classroom while saving countless lives with his Pro-Life ministry. Joe Graham was a model leader of faith and character whose love for all will live on in the careers of those he educated and through the lives of those he protected, said Dr. Robert Ivany, President of the University of St Thomas. Dr. Graham was born in Woodslee, Ontario, Canada, the son of Blanche and ine Graham and one of eight children. Dr. Graham graduated First Class Honors from Assumption of the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada with a B.A. in Philosophy and English Literature in 1947 and a M.A. in Philosophy 1952. The University of Notre Dame awarded him a Doctorate in Philosophy in 1962. Upon earning his doctorate, Dr. Graham taught at Assumption University from 1959-1965 and Stonehill from 1965-1970. He taught at the University of St. Thomas in Houston from 1970-2012. As a professor, Dr. Graham had an indiscriminate kindness and sense of humor, which were hallmarks of every single interaction with each student. Through the years, dozens of students would lean on Dr. Graham for his sage advice and wisdom, and Dr. Graham was more than happy to oblige. Indeed, it would always put a smile on Dr. Grahams face when he received one of the countless letters from a former student letting him know about the positive influence that he had on their lives. It was that same kindness, intelligence, and humor that made Dr. Graham a terrific father to his four children and grandfather to five grandchildren. Dr. Graham loved to sing, dance, tell jokes, travel, and attend every sporting event played by his children, and then his grandchildren. As the various trophies attest, Dr. Graham was a tremendous skier, bowler, bridge player, and golfer in his youth. But Dr. Graham put those pursuits aside to focus on raising his family. And his family did not just include his children. Many friends of his children and young and old professors alike would love to visit and listen to Dr. Graham talk about the important things, learn about their lives, and help steer them in the right direction. Years later, Dr. Graham would always inquire with a keen, genuine interest in how each and every one was doing. Recently, Dr. Graham would sit with his beloved Mary Jo and listen to the latest stories of his children and grandchildren, reminisce about the previous good times, and plan for the next. Dr. Graham was fiercely proud of and loved each of his children and grandchildren and let them know that on a constant basis. Dr. Graham was a founding Board member of the Fellowship for Catholic Scholars and the President of the Houston chapter of Catholics United for the Faith. Dr. Grahams true passion was his position as a founding member of Texas Right to Life, serving as the Texas delegate on the board of National Right to Life. Becoming President in 1990, Dr. Graham grew Texas Right to Life from humble origins to the premier Pro-Life organization of Texas and then into the largest Pro-Life group in the South. Today, thanks to Dr. Graham, Texas Right to Life is a multi-faceted organization that has played an indispensable role in saving hundreds of thousands of innocent human lives in Texas and beyond. Last year the college scholarship program was renamed the Dr. Joseph Graham Fellowship for Pro-Life leaders with 64 recipients active on 21 different campuses across Texas. Dr. Graham is survived by his wife of fifty years, Mary Joan. He is also survived by his son, Jim, and his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Mary Angela Meyer, her husband, Jeff, and their two daughters, Clare and Mary Grace; son, Joe Graham, Jr.; and his daughter, Therese Andersen, her husband, Ric, and their children, Michael, Emily, and Catherine. We mourn the loss of a faithful husband, loving father and grandfather, passionate teacher, ardent protector of innocent human life, and true friend to many, yet we rejoice in the knowledge that Dr. Joe Graham is now receiving his eternal reward. Dr. Joe Graham, you will be missed by many and never replaced or forgotten. Eternal rest grant unto Dr. Joe Graham O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Final respects and condolences may be expressed to the Graham family during visitation on , 24, 2014 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at: Dignity Earthman Hunters Creek 8303 Katy Fwy Houston, TX 77024 713-465-8900 Following visiting hours, all are invited to join in the Rosary at 7:30 pm. The funeral and Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 2pm, , 25, 2014 at: Holy Rosary Catholic Church 3617 Milam Street Houston, TX 77002 In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to the Dr. Joseph Graham Fellowship c/o Texas Right to Life; 9800 Centre Parkway, Suite 200; Houston TX 77006. |

Obituary: Joseph B. Graham, Jr. Joe, age 84, a former US Army veteran, a 34 year Southwestern Bell / AT&T employee, a superb antique clock repairman, and loyal husband and father, died of Parkinsons complications on Oct 19, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. Joe was born 16th, 1925 in Dallas, Texas. He was the youngest child of five born to Joseph and Addie Graham. Joe grew up in the rural areas of Wilmer, Gunter, and Sherman, TX during the depression years and learned to be very resourceful. As a farm youth he was responsible for the care of their animals and the 4:30am milking before school. At the age of thirteen Joe wired his grandfathers home and three other local homes that passed government inspection when rural electrification came through that area. He also managed a bicycle newspaper route in his teens and worked in a radio repair shop saving money to go to college. graduating from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston, TX in 1943, he was accepted into Texas A&M in Station on scholarship, but later was drafted into the service Infantry, Ft. Hood at the end of his college freshman year in 1944. Joe was accepted into Infantry Officer Candidate School at age18. He was commissioned as a Training Officer, later sent to Korea for occupational duty as 1st Lieutenant, and eventually released from duty while at Ft. Sam Houston, TX in 1946. Joe returned to Texas A&M to continue his college education in Electrical Engineering class of 49. While attending Texas A&M Joe married Miss Jean Boone on 2, 1947. Jeans father, Rev. Mark L. Boone, performed their marriage ceremony, where Joe promised to be faithful to Jean and was so till death for 64 years. earning his degree from Texas A&M, Joe was quickly hired by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., but yet again his career was interrupted by war with Korea. Joe was recalled to active duty in Korea in 1951 as Detailed Signal Corp GHQ - Long Lines, in Pusan, Korea where he worked with the telegraph equipment until he was released. Joes formal career spanned 34 years for SW Bell and 2 years for AT&T, retiring as District Manager - Business Installation and Repair. During that time he was transferred from Ft. Worth, Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi, Manhattan NYC, and to San Antonio, TX. During these years Joe and Jean lovingly produced two children, Joe and Jenice Graham, sending both to college and remained active supporters in their activities and grandchildrens lives. Joes retirement from AT&T he was then able to spend his days working with his woodshop equipment. Joe established a clock repair business working out of his home , JBGs Antique Clocks, taking care of clients all over San Antonio as well as clock warranty work for local furniture stores. What his family will fondly recall is that Papa Joe was incredibly gifted and talented with a sharp memory. He could design and make anything with his hands. He had a passion for the details of making old broken things into treasures again and he had the math-minded logic of fixing things like it was a puzzle. He was a faithful and loving husband, father, and grandfather setting excellent moral examples for those that followed. He was a loyal member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church and went to church until he could no longer walk and his memory failed. Joseph B. Graham is survived by his wife, Jean Graham of San Antonio, son Dr. Joseph M. Graham and his wife Cynthia Green Graham of Joplin, MO, daughter Mrs. Jenice G. Benedict and her husband Dr. James F. Benedict of Harwood, TX ; His six grandchildren include Leah M. DeHoyos and husband Dr. Jose DeHoyos, Dr. Mark Graham and wife Dr. Tatiana Graham, 1Lt. Cameron S. Graham of Joplin, MO. , James Christopher Benedict, Clayton G. Benedict, and Alison J. Benedict of San Antonio, and great grandchildren Joseph Mark Graham III and Annabella Graham ; his sister Mildred Graham Weatherford. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Graham Sr. and Addie Weaver Graham and siblings Willis Graham, Margaret Smith, and Zerilda Cook. The Graham family would like to thank all the many lifelong friends and care givers who have shown so much love and support to Joe and Jean during the 15 years of Joes Parkinsons illness. MEMORIAL SERVICE MONDAY OCTOBER 25, 2010 11:00 A.M. ALAMO HEIGHTS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 825 E. BASSE RD Memorial Donations can be made to Alamo Heights Methodist Church in the memory of Mr. Joe Graham. |
