Obituary: A LIFE WELL LIVED\OZELMA GOODLETT Ozelma Goodlett was born in Austin, Texas and continued to live in the Capitol city for the rest of her life. She flourished in the community and enjoyed her home life with her dad, Rennick Hendrix and Mom, Bertha. When she was six years old, Julia Beth joined the family. lived happily for years on Monroe Avenue with a meandering creek in their back yard. Ozelma made the ten mile bus trip to Austin High School where she met her future husband, Armstrong Goodlett. He was a year older and graduated before her. became high school sweethearts and were married as soon as she graduated. At the onset of WWII, "Armie" enlisted and was sent to Louisiana for basic training. By that time, they had a toddler in tow named Dexter, and another baby on the way. Kathleen was born in a two story home converted to a hospital in DeRidder, Louisiana. Armie experienced knee injuries in maneuvers, they returned to Austin. stayed in a small cottage in back of Armie's grandmother's home. Genevieve Ellis lived in a grand two story home that was divided into apartments. Two cottages in back were rentals as well. By this time, Carol Lynn was added to the mix. The three tykes were intrigued by the fish pond in front of their house as well as the garages (formerly stables) that housed the cars. Ozelma had the job of keeping all three of the youngsters quiet while their dad slept during the daytime due to his night shift at the Austin Post Office. On 4, 1950, the family moved to the newly constructed home on West 36th Street. This was to be Ozelma and Armie's home for the next sixty four years. It was a wonderful home with a large backyard. The antics of her three lively growing brood kept Ozelma very occupied with their activities such as swimming lessons and school events. The fourth member of the siblings, Connie, arrived in 1951 to complete the family. Ozelma was the ultimate stay-at-home mom with time for each child. Dexter was involved in boy scouts, astronomy and chess playing. All of her children were special to Ozelma and Armie. were all active in the Methodist Church with MYF activities as well as girl scouts. The sacrifice of time and energy for their four youngsters continued when they bought a lake cabin and spent many wonderful hours at Lake Travis boating and swimming. Going to the public library during the year was a highlight to the children. Ozelma instilled a love of books and good reading habits. Ozelma went into the working world in 1959 to supplement the household income. She was willing to carpool children to school while working part-time at the Texas Teacher's Association. Her dedication to her children in working to provide better benefits as well as keeping nutritious meals on the table and cleaning the house made her the ultimate multi-tasker. Ozelma enjoyed her friendship class at the First Methodist Church, playing the piano for the School Class. She also played for nursing homes, bringing inspiration to those confined in the facilities. Her love for the music of the church and her continuing ministry to others in need was a great example to her children. Armie admired her skill at the piano and bought her a spinet piano to replace the aging roller piano on their 50th anniversary. working part-time at the Teacher's Association, Ozelma began working full-time at the Highway Department located down the street. She found walking to work and then coming home for lunch an added bonus to the job. At that time, she was an "empty nester," and it was enjoyable for her and Armie to do extensive travelling in their camper. toured the Southwest as well as visiting a daughter in California. She reveled in the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park. Armie had retired as a Postmaster of Pflugerville, Texas and spent his "free" time as president of the local Credit Union. As a perk of the job, he was able to attend conventions in the far-flung areas of Hawaii and Alaska. Ozelma also accompanied him on these business trips. Her love of travel and knowledge of our wonderful land made her an interesting friend to her group of Daughters of the Nile ladies. Ozelma enjoyed this organization and had many social events to attend with wonderful dinners and formal outings. Another hobby that Ozelma excelled in was cross stitch. She had dabbled in crocheting, but she found cross stitch challenging and used every opportunity to improve her craft. Many of her friends and family received gifts of her stitchery. Her love of the Word of God was evident in her cheerful disposition and her care of others. She fell victim to Parkinson's Disease about five years ago. She bore this cross courageously, never complaining and always thankful for the help she received from her care-givers. Connie stepped forward to become a companion to her mom, spending weekends with her. Due to her disease, plus having rheumatoid arthritis in her hands, Ozelma became housebound. Despite these limitations, she never complained and continued to read her devotions and the Scriptures. Her suffering only showed her true character of contentment, acceptance and faith in God's Word. Her life is one of much accomplishment despite many disappointments, such as the untimely death of her son Dexter. We are privileged to have known her and to love the person she became. May God grant her peace and joy as she enters into her heavenly home to be healed completely by His presence. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Parkinson's Foundation @ (800) 457-6676 or by mail: Parkinson's Disease Foundation 1359 Broadway - Suite 1509 New York, NY 10018 |
