Obituary: Emily Benjamin Gold died on 22, 2015 after an extraordinary 90 years of life. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she came to Austin, Texas as a teenager, where her family ran The Grill restaurant on Guadalupe Street. She lived the life of a Texan, but Brooklyn never left her. Emily was a proud graduate of the original Austin High School and The University of Texas where she earned a degree in pharmacy. But, Emilys lifes journey did not involve pharmacy. She married the love of her life, Sammy, upon his return from military service and together they established and operated Sammy Gold Photography. Over nearly 60 years, they photographed and catalogued the people and businesses of South Texas. did it together, always together, as best friends. Through Sammys eyes and Emilys finishing touches, including remarkable oil portraits, they created lasting memories for so many and, in doing so, created their own lasting legacies and memories. While together Sammy and Emily established a lasting legacy in professional photography, they considered their four sons their ultimate achievement. In public, Emily was a shy and private person, but to her family, she was the classic Jewish mother, or as one observer commented, a force. In addition to her adoring husband, Emily loved and was loved by her parents and brother, all who predeceased her, her four sons and daughters-in-law, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and the many cats who found love and food at her back door. A private service will be held at Emilys final resting place next to her beloved Sammy. Remembrances may be made to a charity of choice. |
