Obituary: Jerry Lee "Bones" Goebel Born in Corpus Christi Texas, 31, 1957, at the Christus Spohn Hospital to John Edward "Dutch" and Marjorie Louise Goebel. At the time he was the third of what would become four Goebel brothers; Michael, Eddie, Jerry, and Randy. The family moved to Houston, and then after a few years to Austin where John worked at the University of Texas, and Marjorie with the State of Texas. Jerry attended public school and played baseball in the Delwood Optimist's Little League where he was a pitcher for a number of seasons. Marjorie would encourage him to practice by donning a face mask and mitt and playing catch in the back yard. On weekends he would fish, and later hunt, on the family ranch whenever not clearing brush, working cattle, building fence, or bringing in the hay. Dad kept us real busy on weekends, we went to school to rest. He would continue to love the outdoors his entire life. Jerry graduated from what was then LBJ High School in 1976. He immediately went to work for Covert Buick as an automotive technician. He loved to work on cars, especially his own. And, for a number of years was one of the top transmission men in Austin. Jerry was always tall and lean, which soon earned him the nickname "Bones". You could always tell if something belonged to Jerry because it would have a bone drawn on it somewhere. Jerry loved anything fast, and for a number of years owned a Harley Davidson motorcycle which he rode often. Anything "Harley" was a collectable for him. Beer, bourbon, and barbeque, Jerry loved them all. Sometimes, it seemed he loved anything that began with a "B". His preferred bar was Beverly's, and yes, his favorite color was "BLUE". Jerry had a big heart, a great sense of humor, and was a legendary story teller. He could keep you laughing for hours just telling stories about his life, his friends, and his adventures. We will miss him very much. |

Obituary: Arthur Goebel was born on 23, 1919, at home, in the community of Millheim Tx.. He was the third child, the only son, of Hugo & Emma Goebel who had two older daughters, Elsie & Lucille. He grew up and attended school there through the eighth grade. There were many stories of his youth that he told us. One, of being bit by a copperhead in the cotton field- even before he was old enough to go to school- and how his mother carried him home & stuck his foot in coal oil as treatment. He was sick for several days, & saddened that he could not go to his sister Lucys school festival. He spoke many times of how they had to walk to school- in all kinds of weather, uphill both ways! How they would have to get up early to take care of the cows or work in the fields before school, but yet when the time came, they all wished that they could continue to go to school instead of having to quit and work on the farm. He also spoke of the many trips driving the mules and wagon, taking some crop to town, and having lots of time to enjoy and study the countryside, since a trip there & back would take all day then and now takes about 15 minutes. Arthur learned to eat everything or anything as he was growing up. It was eat what was served or do without. ate what was in season or what they could afford, and were thankful for the food that they had. He worked on the farm until he went in to the army in Feb. 1942. In the small communities of Millheim, Cat Spring, & Cleveland- (all in the Sealy, Bellville area) everyone was kin to someone & the families would all gather to celebrate many events like birthdays, holidays, or weddings. Within these family gatherings, he met a girl from Houston, Gladys Caletka, whose parents were from that area, but had moved to Houston for him to work. really don remember their exact meeting, but romance did enter the picture in the early forties, when they started going to dances and even a Tom Mix movie now & then. (The dancing did continue in their lives, but not the movie going.) Dating was interrupted, but not letters by the US Mail, when Arthur went into the army where he traveled from Mineral Wells, TX, to the California desert, where he received intensive training on how to bury Spam in the sand, the one food that he never really enjoyed eating after the army. From there he was sent to the island of Attu, off the coast of Alaska. Snow was not one of his favorites after that. He got to the island after the Americans had taken it over, but there were still many from his group that did not return. He attained the rank of Sergeant, and spoke of the many hikes he had to lead his men on & how the guys were always coming to him with excuses of why they couldn go or continue on the hike. His reply was, don tell me, Im just following orders. Get up & lets go! Gladys & Arthur did get back together upon his return after the war was over, and when he was discharged on 1, 1945. were married 24 days later, on 25, 1945 at Zion Lutheran Church in Houston with the reception at Gladys parents house in the Heights area. a quick honeymoon to New Braunfels, the $300 nest egg wasn lasting very long. Arthur landed a job with American Can on 7, 1945 and worked there for 36 years. He became a production mechanic, meaning that he worked on the machines that produced cans and the lids for companies such as those who sold coffee & beer. His favorite lunch for all those years was 2 dry smoked sausage sandwiches (Sausage, catsup & Butter), chips & cookies. He hated when they would run out of the sausage that they had made themselves, by butchering hogs at his sister Lucille & husband r Wittenburgs home every year, usually around Thanksgiving & their anniversary. On 11, 1947, they were blessed with the birth of their son Reggie Earl. In 1950, they bought the house next door to Gladys parents on LeGreen & Michaux and would live there for the rest of their lives. On 22, 1952 their daughter, Myra Ann was born. Arthur became interested in the Boy Scouts of Troop 82 at Zion. He served in many positions of that troop, including scoutmaster, leading the boys through many camping trips, courts of honor & meetings being a strong & good role model for all the boys involved. He also served as a commissioner for the area & the district before work hours forced him out. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and participated in the Brotherhood. He hated when he had to miss a meeting and looked forward to the chili supper when he could go help cook the chili all day. He was also active in the Proctor Plaza Civic Club and served as a Precinct Judge there for years, until he was no longer able. Arthur & Gladys loved to dance, and they were good at it. He was always the man or the Dad that didn get much rest at a dance as the females that wanted to dance & either didn have a partner or dancing partner would catch him whenever he wasn dancing. He didn mind, and was glad to work with those little girls who needed to learn a few steps. Besides the polka dances, they also did some square dancing at American Can Co. and in Millheim. were members of the Cat Spring Agricultural Society and the continued... |
