Obituary: Joan Louise (Hourihan) Gleason, age 78, died peacefully at her home on , 4, 2017. Joan possessed a warm, contagious smile and witty sense of humor that never failed her. Joan was born on 26, 1938 in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated high school from Girls Latin School and then studied Economics at Framingham State University. These studies led to her proficiency in foreign languages and many word games. Joan is pre-deceased by her parents, Timothy and Emma Eichorn Hourihan, and sister Barbara Hourihan Reidy. She is survived by her two loving sisters: Claire Brassil of Walpole, MA and Kathleen Hourihan of Norwood, MA. She is survived by her eight children and ten grandchildren: John Gleason, wife Janet, their children Patrick, Captain, U.S. Army, and Andrew, of Cincinnati, OH. Peter Gleason of Dallas, TX. Timothy Gleason, and his children Bettina and Joseph, of New York City. Joseph Gleason, wife Melinda, and their sons Griffin and Emmett, of Houston, TX. Theodore Gleason of Houston, TX. Samuel Gleason, wife Caty, and their children Julia, Nicolas, Alexia, and Bettina, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mary Elizabeth Gleason of Houston, TX. Thomas Gleason of Lake Bluff, IL. Because of her faith and strong belief in Catholic education, her eight children attended St. Pius V School in Pasadena. Her seven sons attended St. Thomas High School and Mary Elizabeth attended St. Agnes Academy, both in Houston. When her youngest son, Thomas, graduated from St. Thomas High School, the school recognized Joan for fifteen consecutive years of attendance and active involvement. She was a lifetime member of St. Pius V Catholic Church. Joan instilled a strong sense of faith and devotion in her children and grandchildren. She passed on the resilience that she developed for many years. She discouraged her children from compromising long-term ambitions for short-term reward. She encouraged her children to leave the comforts of home and experience things foreign to them. Her simple, standing request when her children spread their wings around the world was o bring their mother back a nice refrigerator magnet. Her many hobbies revolved around the arts: calligraphy, signing, piano, and collecting Hummel figurines. Her love of architecture and design led to a passion for lighthouses. She enjoyed all sporting events, especially Notre Dame football and SMU womens basketball. Joan began her professional career as a book designer for Houghton-Mifflin Publishing in Boston following her college studies. Her keen eye, love for design, and passion for putting things together made her successful at this job. As a newly single mother, she re-entered the work force as a community events planner at McDonalds in Pasadena. Her talented son, Peter, was the magician for many of her events and worked hundreds of crowds with sleight of hand in a dazzling blue velvet suit and tie. Joan was employed by Pasadena Sporting Good for twenty years. Her loyal clientele travelled far distances for her expert views on products and to soak up her warmth, wit and gift of gab. Joan served as a Election Judge, a telephone operator for AT&T, and a Park Ranger at the San Jacinto Monument for the Texas State Parks and Wildlife Commission. She retired from work in 2002 to be able to enjoy more time with her children and grandchildren. Joan departs this earth having lived a beautiful, full life. Obituary: Jerry F. Gleason, Jr., son of Jerry F. Gleason, Sr. and Ruby Heath Gleason, was born 2, 1921 in Denison, Texas. His early years were spent in Luling, Texas, near Austin and San Antonio. He attended Texas A & M, a member of the class of 1943 which was graduated and inducted into the U.S. Army in the same ceremony. Jerry and his fellow classmates, who had studied chemical engineering, were assigned to the Armys Chemical Warfare Service, serving at Camp Sibert in Alabama and at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. He became the Security Officer at Edgewood, responsible for the transfer of the Armys chemical weaponry to strategic military sites around the world. He made such missions to North Africa and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of Captain. In 1947, Jerry began his career with Magnolia Oil which later became Mobil Oil, working in the oil fields in Oklahoma and the Panhandle of Texas. He progressed through the Producing and Natural Gas Departments before moving to Mobils Research Department in Dallas, then being transferred to the Research section of Mobils Corporate Offices in New York. thirteen years there he was offered the opportunity to oversee the construction of a new research facility for Mobil in Dallas. Since he was approaching retirement, it was an opportunity to return home to Texas. Jerry retired in 1984 and began enjoying the fruits of his labor. He played tennis at every opportunity, traveled extensively with his wife Doris, and best of all, became Granddad to three adorable little granddaughters living nearby. It was said by others he was a man of honor and integrity throughout his life; a fine gentleman loved by many. enjoying almost as many years of retirement as his working career, Jerry left his loving family on 21, 2015. He was proceeded in death by his parents, two daughters, Nancy Gleason Taylor and Patricia Lynn Gleason, a sister, Margaret Gleason Landrum, and two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Huffhines Griffing and Frances Huffhines Finklea. He is survived by his wife, Doris Huffhines Gleason, daughter and son-in-law, Shannon Gleason Dion and Eric Dion, and three granddaughters, Erin Dion, Megan Dion and Lauren Taylor. A visitation will be held , 27, 2015, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Sparkman Hillcrest , 7405 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas. Obituary: George W. Gleason George W. Gleason, lovingly called Papaw Bill by his family, was born in Faceville, Georgia, on 10, 1922. On May 8, 2015, he opened his eyes and saw heaven. He was surrounded by his loving family and caregivers as he struggled against the disease that would eventually take him away. It brought the family much comfort to know that he was holding the hand of David, the son-in-law he liked to call his son-in-heart, when he began his last journey. From 1941-1945, during WW2, Bill served in the Army Air Force as a armorer gunner, then later, as a 509 Toggelier Bombardier in the 444th Squadron of the 320th Bomb Group in the European campaign. He flew 65 missions and was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, a Presidential Citation, four Bronze Stars, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Fourragere and other foreign medals from countries that were grateful to be liberated by the courageous young men of the greatest generation. Bill has been a resident of this area since 1945. He and his adored wife of 69 years, Verdie, raised their family while enjoying gardening and fishing. traveled throughout the United States to see the wonders of our glorious country, many times bringing their beloved grandson, Troy, with them. Bill also liked to write comforting poems for those who lost loved ones, and Donna promised him that we would hear one for him today. Bill is survived by his wife, Verdie, and their daughter, Donna, and David, their son-in-law and beloved main caregiver for the past two decades. Bill is also survived by his son, John Gleason, and his wife, Diana, and grandchildren, Troy and Alicia Guidry, Belinda and her husband, Jeremy Battenfield, Brian Gleason, and 10, adored great grandchildren-Taylor and Paisley Guidry, Cody and Kiera Battenfield, and Jeffery, Jada, Patrick, Jade, Moani, and Elaika Gleason. The family thanks Hospice for helping them to keep a promise to Bill-that he be allowed to die at home. Thanks to his amazing Hospice team, compassionate neighbors, The Meal Team at First Baptist Church Groves, the loving members of First Baptist Nederland and its In-Touch School Class, it was a promise they were able to keep. On May 13, 2015, a visitation for family and friends will be held at Levingston in Port Neches from 3-4 p.m., with Dr. Jason Burden officiating at a Memorial Service at 4 p.m. Military Graveside rites will be held at Memory Gardens, 3098 Highway 69 N, Nederland, Texas. |
