Obituary: Obituary Capt. George F. Gettys U.S. Army, Retired passed away on 12, 2012 in New Braunfels, surrounded by his family. He was born on 30, 1931 in Gastonia, North Carolina to Lula Riddle. He is preceded in death by his mother; and brother, Mark Gettys; survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Maxine J. Gettys; sons, David Gettys, his wife Shirley of Mansfield, John Gettys, his wife Kendall of Temple, Jeff Gettys, his wife Karen of Harker Heights and James Gettys, his wife Lisa of Killeen; step-sons, Preston Wallis, his wife Sherri and Kendall Wallis; sister, Faye Hannah, her husband Jerry; and 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. George was an Eagle Scout, retired Captain in the U.S. Army, and achieved a Bachelors of Applied Studies at Our Lady of the Lake University. He was a 32nd Degree Mason for 50 years, Poet, Artist and Sculptor. George always said that his finest achievement was his four sons. A visitation will be held on , 17, 2012 from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at Colonial . services will be held on , 18, 2012 at 12:00 P.M. at the 1st Baptist Church in Universal City. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, George requested donations be made in his memory to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital at www.stjude.org. Biography Capt. George F. Gettys U.S. Army, Retired was known as many things to many people. He was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew him best, George will be remembered as a very exceptional person. He was the son of Lula Riddle. George was raised with two siblings. He had one brother, Mac Gettys and one sister, Faye Hannah. George was usually involved in all sorts of activities with his siblings. He and his siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years. As a young boy, George had a number of interests. Like most children, he enjoyed playing and making up games. He was curious about the world around him and was often eager to explore it. He was an Eagle Scout for many years. However, to George, the most fun to be had was simply playing and spending time with his friends. George enjoyed his college years, which may have been a challenge with all of the academics, responsibilities, and the sudden freedom that accompanied them, but George was able to manage the balancing act. He also pursued graduate school, earning his Bachelors of Applied Studies. George worked hard to be a good father to his children and he did his best to fulfill their needs. George was blessed with four sons, David, John, Jeff and James; and two step-sons Preston and Kendall. Fortunately, George enjoyed what he did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, George worked diligently and did his best to succeed in his career. His primary occupation was the U.S. Army, and IRS Appraiser. George always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done. George was an Army, Retiree. Through his hard work, he achieved the rank of Captain. He received several awards recognizing him for his service, including a National Defense Service Medal. Senior Parachute Badge, Army Commendation Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. His fellow soldiers viewed him as a brother in arms and knew that he was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home. George enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. His favorite pursuits were Art and Sculpture. He was content to enjoy his favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share his interests with others. Throughout his life, George was a doer and was always actively involved in professional and community organizations. George was an active member of the Masons for 50 years as a 32nd Degree Mason. George passed away on 12, 2012 at Eden Hills, in New Braunfels, Texas. He is survived by loving wife of 21 years, Maxine J. Gettys; sons, David Gettys, his wife Shirley of Mansfield, John Gettys, his wife Kendall of Temple, Jeff Gettys, his wife Karen of Harker Heights and James Gettys, his wife Lisa of Killeen; step-sons, Preston Wallis, his wife Sherri and Kendall Wallis; sister, Faye Hannah, her husband Jerry; and 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
