Obituary: Services for Billie Rae (Thornton) George, 77, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. , 21, 2015 in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mrs. George was born 13, 1937 in Lexington, Lee , Texas, the daughter of the late Dorothy (Robins) and Ray G. Thornton. She passed away on 18, 2015 in a local hospital. She was employed by Nations Bank as a receptionist for twenty years. She was known as Meme George or Nother Granny. Her passion was her grandbabies, which turned to her great-grandbabies. Mrs. George was a phenomenal cook and her afternoon coffee time was her favorite part of her day. She also enjoyed swimming and her lily and rose garden. Mrs. George was a member of Burke Baptist Church, past member of the Burke Chapter # 1095 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and current member of the Lufkin Chapter #382 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was very dedicated to her Eastern Star Chapter, her family and her obligations. Survivors include her daughter, Billie Ann Kilgore of Diboll; son and daughter-in-law, Vernie Allen Hatthorn and Cindy of Bandera; son, Bryan Keith Hatthorn and special friend, *Tesa Wind of Diboll; eight grandchildren, Patrick, Alicia, Tasha, Brandon, Ryan, Nick, Heather and Aleaha; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Velma Irene Pace of Austin, Bobbie Lee Schulze of Giddings and Betty West of San Antonio; two special friends, Rosemary Swetland-Berry and Wilma Rector; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Bruce George; son, Gary L. Hatthorn in 1994; son-in-law, William Billy Kilgore, Jr.; brother, Lawrence Thornton; brother, Gene Thornton; and granddaughter, Athea Millage Hatthorn. Pallbearers will be Patrick Kilgore, Ryan Hatthorn, Brandon Stringer, Nick Hatthorn, Bo Smith and David Seymore. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. evening at Gipson . Obituary: Bill M. George passed away peacefully on , 03, 2010, after a ten year struggle with Alzheimers. Bill was born in Canadian, Texas, on 18, 1926, to Roy and Irene George and was the youngest of three children. He grew up on the George Ranch at a time when young boys ran traps in the morning, went to school during the day, and worked cattle in the afternoon. Bill graduated from Canadian High School and went on to West Texas to play football but left college in the midst of World War II. serving in the U.S. Merchant Marines, he returned home and started riding the rodeo circuit, competing in and winning rodeos from the Cow Palace and the Calgary Stampede to Madison Square Gardens. Bill was one of the original Rodeo Cowboys Association members. He won numerous titles in bareback riding, steer wrestling and bull riding, including the coveted Spencer Penrose All Around buckle. Bill served on the Board of Directors for the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City for many years. In 2000, Bill was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame. In between rodeos, Bill worked as a movie stuntman in movies such as McClintock and Arizona Raiders. a short stint in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Bill returned to rodeo competing until 1964. retiring his spurs, Bill judged rodeos and then started a long career in the western tack and apparel industry. Bill and his wife, Billie, owned American Hat for many years until Alzheimers forced his retirement in 2001. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Billie George; brother, R.E. George; and sister, Fern Vise. Bill is survived by two sons, Willie George and John George; two daughters, Molly ll and Jan Lewis; eleven grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren. The family especially thanks his long-time care givers Kathy Hayden and Norma Ramsey and their extended families. Services are scheduled for 12:30 PM, , 6, 2010, at Cashner in Conroe, Texas, with a visitation prior to the funeral starting at 11:30. |
