Obituary: Barbara Gay, age 80, went to be with her Lord and Savior on 22, 2014. She was born 30, 1934 in Clarksville, Texas. She was a retired LVN and member of Hampton Road Church of Christ. Barbara was an active, caring member of the community for many years. She served on the Liberty Eylau Community Education Board, was a former member of the Liberty Eylau PTA, a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, and a member of the Bluebonnet Garden Club and the Rebekah Lodge. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Gay, one granddaughter, Shelly Power Bryant, and one grandson, Joshua Washington. Survivors include two daughters and sons in law, Becky and Leon Power, and Andrea and Jimmy Washington, and one son and daughter in law, Alex and Misty Gay, all of Texarkana, Arkansas; three grandchildren; and their spouses, Heath Power (Shelley) of North Richland Hills, Texas, Jarrod Washington (Audra) of Greenwood, Arkansas, and Nikki Walls (Kris) of Texarkana, Arkansas, and 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m., , 25, 2014 at East Memorial Chapel - Moores Lane with Don Brown officiating. Burial will be in Chapelwood Memorial Gardens under the direction of East - Moores Lane. Obituary: Barbara Ann Gay of San Antonio died from complications of stroke and Parkinsons disease on , 26, 2013, at the age of 82. She was born on her grandfathers dairy farm on 28, 1930 in Palmer, Texas, to Herman Samuel Wadley and Drusilla Gilley Wadley. Her father was electrocuted in an accident at work when she was two weeks old. At the age of five, Barbaras mother married George M. Daniel whereupon she and her big sister, Sammy, moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana. briefly living in Lafayette, Louisiana, George was transferred by the Southern Pacific Railroad to Houston. Barbara attended Love School in The Heights, where she performed in many plays and programs and was elected May Queen. Barbara studied acting with a private acting coach. attending Alexander Hamilton Junior High and John H. Reagan High School, she moved to Denton, Texas to live with her aunt and uncle, Judge Ben and Mae Boyd, and their daughters Patsy and Charlotte. At Denton High, Barbara excelled in speech and drama. The Denton High one-act play went to UIL State Competition in 1948, where the play was named Best Play, and she was named Best Actress. Barbara also won first place in Senior Girls Declamation. She was awarded a full scholarship to any Texas public university. Barbara chose Texas Womans University in Denton, where she majored in speech and drama and minored in English, finishing in 2 ½ years. Barbara appeared in TWU stage productions and played Mary in the TWU Nativity Play. A talent scout from Paramount Pictures saw her in rehearsal and invited Barbara to take a screen test. She declined, preferring to finish college and then get married and have a family. She continued her love of acting by performing in community theater as a young adult. Barbaras best friend at Denton High School was McDonald Gay, who worked behind the scenes on speech and drama productions. Their friendship became a romance and they married on 10, 1950 at the Little Chapel in the Woods on the Texas Womans University campus. Mack was drafted into the Army, and Barbara taught school while Mack served in Korea. Their daughter, Patricia, was born in 1955, followed by their second daughter, Rebecca, in 1959. Mack decided to make the military his career, and Barbara excelled at being an Army wife. She loved moving to different places and was passionate about traveling. Macks assignments took them to Oklahoma, Kansas, Virginia, and Germany as well as Texas. The family enjoyed many trips throughout Europe. Barbara was a single mother to the girls while Mack served two tours in Vietnam. During the second tour, she and the girls made their home in San Antonio. In 1978, Mack retired from the Army while stationed at Ft. Sam Houston. The couple left San Antonio to make their home in Missouri City, Texas so Mack could begin a civilian career with Houston National Bank. a transfer to Dallas, the couple lived in Grapevine and Irving. In 1996, Mack retired and he and Barbara moved to San Antonio to live at The Towers retirement community. There they made many wonderful friends and enjoyed serving on various Towers committees and attending many social and cultural events. Barbaras greatest pleasure and joy in life was her family. She worked very hard to make a wonderful home life for her husband and children. Holidays were very important occasions, especially birthdays and Christmas. Barbara volunteered as a room mother at her childrens schools, taught school, volunteered at M.D. Anderson, and supported Macks volunteer duties with Theater Under the Stars. She loved books, plays, musical theater, movies, observing nature, and taking long walks. She especially enjoyed being a grandparent and will always be remembered for her love of butterflies. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Mack and their infant son, David Benjamin Gay; by her parents, Drusilla and Herman Wadley; by ;her brother-in-law, Robert Taylor; and by her step-sister, Norma Daniel Purnell. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Westfall of San Antonio and Rebecca Eberth and husband, Ed, of Glendale, Arizona; grandchildren Sara Westfall, Brian Westfall and Drew Eberth; her sister, Sammy Lynn Taylor, of Angleton, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Barbaras caregivers for the devoted care they gave her during the final stage of her life: Isabel Ybarra, Jessica Ybarra, and Cynthia Choate.
