Obituary: Doyle Edward Gates, age 86 of San Antonio, TX passed away , 22, 2014 in the presence of his loving wife Manda. He was born in Gatesville, TX on 10, 1927. He graduated from Clifton High School, and joined the US Navy in 1945 and served as a Pharmacist Mate, 3rd Class. In 1947, he married Manda Winifred Brajcich. his Navy service ended, he attended Texas A&M for a brief time, and then transferred to Humboldt State in California where he received a degree in Marine Biology. He pursued a lifelong career in marine biology. Early in his career, he worked at the Hunter Foland whaling station in northern California from 1950 to 1951. In 1954, he worked aboard the research vessel NB Schofield at Fields Landing, CA. Later he was the managing director of the Marine Resource Division with the California Department of Fish & Game, where he retired after 20 years of service. He then briefly worked as a lobbyist with the Tuna Research Foundation at Terminal Island, CA, which supported the American tuna industry. He completed his career in Honolulu, HI working for the National Marine Fisheries Service as managing director of the Western Pacific Program Office. He retired from federal service in Hawaii before returning to his beloved Texas. He was active in his faith and held positions on the various parish councils at St. John Vianney in Kailua, HI and St. Mark the Evangelist in San Antonio, TX. He was an avid reader, writer and story teller. He also enjoyed dabbling in art, music and bird watching. Preceding him in death were his mother and father, Sophie and Oscar Gates, Sr.; his brothers, John, Oscar Jr., and Charles. He is survived by his wife Manda; brother Daniel Bain Gates; seven children: Stephen and Barbara Gates of Floresville, TX, Barbara and Joseph Smith of Christchurch, New Zealand, Robert Gates of Midland, TX, Gary and Rae Gates of San Pedro, CA, Susan and Dwayne Clay of Macon, GA, Thomas and Martha Gates of San Pedro, CA, Patrick and Shirley Gates of Honolulu, HI; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Obituary: Dorothy Olcott Ball was born to John and Genevieve Ball in Alexandria, Louisiana on 16, 1913. She married Robert Lee (Bob) Gates in St. Louis, Missouri in 1939. several years in Oklahoma and Texas, they settled in Houston as Bob was with Humble Oil. remained there until they retired to Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1972. lived there until Bobs death in 1983. Dorothy relocated to Texas where their daughter Judy Gates Hicks and her husband, Jerry, lived. She passed away at her residence at Rio Terra in New Braunfels, Texas early in the morning on 28, 2013. Obituary: Creel Thomas Gates, born 22, 1928, passed away 10, 2014 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Creel Alonzo Gates and Thomas Ethel Paris Gates, and his siblings, Martha Gates Jackson, Betty Gates Vetters, and Robert Lee Gates. Tomes family moved to Corpus Christi in 1939. His father opened the first Gates Bakery in Alice, Texas where Tome grew up and worked in the bakery with his brothers and sisters. While on vacation at Garner State Park, he met his wife to be, Gwyn Anne Sampson. Tome married Gwyn on 17, 1954. Recently, Tome was asked about his favorite place in the world. He stated boldly and without hesitation, Garner State Park! Tome and Gwyn had three sons: Gy Dobie (Sandra), Dr. Joshua Edward (Tina), and Zachary Creel (Sara); five grandsons: Ian Thomas, Aaron Thomas, Kaleb Creel, Colton James, and Kye Forrest; two granddaughters: Rebecca Ann Wilson (Joe) and Alison Anne Lund (Nicholas), and one great-grandson, Levi Joseph Wilson. Tome and his father opened eight bakeries throughout South Texas. Gates Bakeries were well known for their delicious donuts, cookies, pastries, pies and breads. However, it was their wedding, Quinceanera, and birthday cakes that made them famous! Today, Gates Donuts still serves Corpus Christis best donuts and iced cookies and has been in business over seventy five years with three generations of Gates men at the helm! The family thanks dedicated employees Jessie and Guadalupe (Lupe) Silvas, who worked at the bakery over sixty years, and Mary Torres and Francis Canales who worked over fifty years. Mary Jasso has worked at Gates Donuts over thirty years and is still there today. Thanks to Lydia Martinez, Alice Ramirez, Virginia Mick, Mirtha Galindo, and all the other wonderful, dedicated employees who made Gates Bakeries and Gates Donuts legendary in Corpus Christi. Tome was a member of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church and an active member of the YMCA where he formed many friendships during his youth. Gene Lanfear, Vance Littleton, Frank Brooner, David Warren, Dickie Johnson, Don Roesler, Olin Trabue, and Mitch Eisenberg became Tomes lifelong friends. Gene Lanfear has been his dearest friend. Special Thanks to Uncle Gene and his family. We love you more than you know. In 1969, Tome and a friend, Jack Sulik, purchased a piece of land on the Dry Frio River. Though it was somewhat rustic, he Shack was Tomes favorite place to spend time with his wife, his boys, and his grandchildren. Tome took his children and grandchildren to he Shack to learn to hunt, fish, and appreciate the outdoors. When visiting he Shack, the Gates were considered members of the Reagan Wells Baptist Church. We thank the Reagan Wells community who accepted our family as one of their own. Gwyns death in 2002, Tome attended his high school reunion and was reunited with high school sweetheart, Patty Johnson Schwensen. He and Patty spend the next ten years traveling and enjoying their golden years together. The family is grateful for the happiness Patty brought back to Tomes life. This was the dessert in life that not many people enjoy. We love you Patty. Tome also loved the game of golf - a game they say one cannot win, only play, and Tome loved to play. He and his wife, Gwyn, were members of Pharaoh Golf Club. Tome was part of a regular foursome which usually included various combinations of Jay Mingle, Ken Wingfield, Bill Bryant, Bruce Holman, Creed Coffee or Jim Burkalter. Many memories were made during those years. Tome began regular visits to Patty Schwensen in Clay , Kansas, he started a new foursome of golfers who continued to play until Tome returned home. Thanks to his Clay golf buddies Don Button, Dean King, and Dr. Jack Blackwood, and to the morning breakfast group that Tome enjoyed so much. Thanks for your friendship and the love you gave Tome when he visited your community. The family especially thanks Gene Lanfear, ken Wingfield, and Jay Mingle for the many years of friendship they shared with Tome. Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Doctors Regional Hospital and Angel Brite Hospice for your kindness and compassion. Special thanks go to Rosie Parks for her assistance and loving care during Tomes illness, and for her familys friendship throughout the years. Finally, thank you to our Heavenly Father for welcoming home our earthly father, Tome Gates.
