Obituary: John Philip Garton went to be with his friend, Jesus, on 12, 2015. He was born on May 17, 1924, in Elkhart, Kansas to Reed and Nellie Garton. He was the youngest of three children. His father died when John was 12. Upon graduation from Elkhart High School in 1942, he moved to San Antonio to live with his mother, who worked at Kelly Field in the war effort. He worked for a few months driving an ambulance for a funeral home and then joined the Army Air Corps in , 1942, at the age of 18.
John trained to shoot .50 caliber machine guns and maintain B-17 bombers. Training took him to west Texas, Nevada, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida. John was assigned to the newly formed 483rd Bomb Group in 1943. As the new unit trained together at various air bases, he and a buddy passed through Dallas where the buddys girlfriend was staying. fixed John up with a blind date and they hit if off immediately. He and the date married shortly thereafter on 15, 1943. John and Billie Bess Rice of Fairfield, Texas remained married for 69 years until she predeceased him in 2012.
Bess followed him to Tennessee and then to Florida. In those few months, the 483rd became fully equipped with B-17G heavy bombers and was to deploy to Italy in and 1944. In the lead squadron and just 19 years old, John left Florida in 1944, hopped through the Caribbean and on to Brazil. There, the squadrons planes underwent preparation for a flight across the Atlantic Ocean to North Africa. Sand storms delayed their departure to Foggia, Italy. Later, when other B-17s arrived in Italy, missions began on 30, 1944; Johns first being to Imotski, Yugoslavia that same day. John was a Technical Sergeant and served as crew chief, responsible for the seven enlisted men and their plane, SheHasta. He turned 20 on May 17, 1944. John flew 50 missions to Yugoslavia, Austria, northern Italy, France, Germany, and Hungary.
John didn talk much about his wartime experiences until later in life. Most notable was a mission on May 18, 1944 to the Nazi oil fields and refineries in Ploesti, Romania. This area was heavily defended by anti-aircraft guns and German fighters. He remarked that the pilots groaned when Ploesti was assigned as a mission target. A San Antonio newspaper article later found in his mothers papers read:

SA Sergeant Flies Crippled Fort

Tech. Sgt. John P. Garton, 20, son of Mrs. Nellie M. Garton, has been awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross for participating in a bombing mission on oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania, May 18, an engineer gunner on an air force Flying Fortress from a base in Italy. Concentrated flak harassed Gartons plane as it made its bomb run and after completion of the run, overwhelming numbers of enemy fighters attacked the formation from all directions, both the pilot and co-pilot were wounded by fragments from a 20-millimeter shell, but were able to keep the plane under control. The citation adds:

Sergeant Garton, after observing that both were able to retain the controls, manned his guns and aided in driving off attacking planes until a P-38 fighter escort arrived, at which time he took over controls of the Flying Fortress and piloted the plane back to its home base.

Sergeant Garton previously had been awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. Prior to entering the air corps in 1942, he was an embalmer in San Antonio. His wife Mrs. Billie Bess Garton resides in Galena Park, Texas.

John later related that he landing was smooth, but stopping her was the hard part as I ran into an ambulance at the end of the runway. He left Naples, Italy by ship in 1944 after the required 50 missions and returned to the States. He was honorably discharged a year later on 2, 1945.

his service, John and Bess moved to Galena Park, Texas near her parents. The first son Ronald Dean was born 2, 1946 while at Galena Park. soon moved into a new GI two bedroom house on the north side of Houston. The second son, Billy Reed, was born 20, 1947, Karen Sue was born 11, 1948, and Glenda Lee was born 27, 1950.

In 1951, a friend K.P. Kendall invited John to hear Billy Graham speak who was in Houston. John accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at that meeting. That was the beginning of his lifelong dedication to serving our Lord. The family joined Adriel Baptist Church down the street from where the family lived. He was ordained a deacon there and served as church treasurer. He played full court basketball on the Adriel team and coached the boys in baseball. As the church grew, John and his boys were there with the other members, nights and s building a larger sanctuary and more school rooms. His carpentry skills were excellent.

In 1962, the family moved to a larger house, still on the north side of Houston, and moved their church membership to Bethel Baptist. He and Bess were active members there for the next 50 years. He joined Oak Forest Baptist in 2013 as an inactive deacon. John did what the Lord led him to do.

John loved to hunt deer and fish for specs and reds. The family always had fish in the freezer. His enthusiasm for bay fishing was infectious, and he converted many to the sport over the years. he retired from Tool Traders, Inc., all a friend had to do was mention fishing and he would take them the next morning. He was always ready to go, boat gassed up and battery charged. Show up at his house at the appointed time and he would cook breakfast, load up, and be in continued...

Obituary: Louise (Tootsie) Frankfurt Gartner, a lifelong Dallas resident, was an exceptional visionary, tremendously forward thinking and incredibly ahead of her time. Her principles focused on healthy living and giving back and were reflected in everything she did throughout her 96 years of living. Following her graduation from the University of Illinois in the 1940s, Louise and her sisters established Page Boy Maternity, the first female owned garment manufacturing company, where she was the creative designer and inspiration for the leading maternity wear company in the US. Page Boy Maternity and Louise's designs were featured in Time and Good Housekeeping magazine during her first two pregnancies. Page Boy Maternity also produced the first ever maternity style show at the Stork Club in New York. While visiting a spa in Mexico in the mid-1960's, Louise was introduced to yoga, which sparked her lifelong interest in unconventional, yet age-old, approaches to better health. Her belief in the connection of body, mind and soul prompted her to offer yoga breaks in the Page Boy Maternity factory. Combining her zest for life, love of fashion and giving nature, Louise founded the dance troupe "Always on Line Dancers." She designed costumes and produced shows, which the troupe performed for local senior citizen gatherings, nursing homes, and retirement centers. In 1994, Louise established the Charitable Produce of Dallas at the North Texas Food Bank by inviting local grocers and wholesalers to donate their blemished and unsalable, but still very healthy, produce. It was then distributed to the less fortunate. Until then, the North Texas Food Bank handled primarily canned goods and other staples. The food bank was initially unsure it could handle the program so Louise funded the Charitable Produce for its first six months. have since distributed 170 million pounds of produce. She was also the facilitator in persuading Hutchins State Jail to raise fresh produce for the food bank. Years ahead of her time, Louise laid the ground work for what is now the North Texas Food Bank's focus of distributing nutritious meals to families in need. Louise always had a deep interest in holistic medicine and was constantly looking for new and innovative ways to improve health and well-being. As the Founder and President of the Alternative Medicine Research Foundation of Texas, in 1997 Louise established a twofold purpose of funding studies that evaluate nontraditional therapies for prevention and treatment of common illnesses and to educate physicians and the public about the growing, integrative and holistic area of health care. Louise created Common Cents Dallas in 1998, which teaches philanthropy to students of all grade levels in the Dallas Independent School District. The program empowers students to take the initiative of collecting donations and then deciding which charities will receive the money. Since its inception, the program has awarded over $800,000 to non-profits chosen by the students. Louise believed the foundation of philanthropy and kindness for others could change a person for life, as well as a whole community. Her philanthropic and civic contributions include the establishment of the Louise Gartner Hyperbaric Oxygen at Baylor Hospital in 2002 after witnessing the healing effects oxygen therapy had on burn, stroke patients and crush injuries. Since its inceptions, the has treated over 20,000 patients with a wide variety of medical issues. Louise made major contributions to the Natural Research Medicine Unit at Hadassah University Hospital. She served on the Endowment Foundation Board of Golden Acres and on the Foundation Board of Trustees of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas. She also served on the Board of Governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, the Board of North Texas Food Bank and the Board of Thanks-Giving Square. She received national recognition in Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women during her lifetime. Louise's legendary efforts and activities have greatly impacted the Dallas community. She was honored by the Dallas Chapter of Hadassah, awarded the Civic Service Award of Akiba Academy, presented the Association of Fundraising Professionals Outstanding Philanthropist award and bestowed the Annual Spirit of Thanks-Giving award. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Jennie (Bergman) and Benjamin Frankfurt, her loving husband of 35 years, Charles "Chick" Gartner, and her siblings Elsie Frankfurt Pollock, Edna Frankfurt Rafkind and Victor William Frankfurt. She is survived by Brenda Gartner Berg and husband, Lee Michael Berg, Robert Gartner and his fiancée, Cheryl Rey, Gigi Gartner and her fiancé, Alex Hamerman, her grandsons, Ryan Berg and wife, Jessica, Scott Berg and wife, Leslie, and Chad Berg and wife, Vanessa, her great grandchildren, Zach, Emily, Adam, Jacob, Lee and Michael Berg. The family wishes to thank Luisa Dean and other faithful caregivers for their gentle care of their mother and warm compassion shown to the family during Louise's later years. service will be held at 3:00 PM on , 16, 2017 in the Stern Chapel at Temple Emanu-El, 8500 Hillcrest Ave., Dallas, TX 75225.
