Obituary: Teresa Sousa Gonzalez was born Nov. 28, 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri. She had a full 96 years of life. Teresa had 4 children, Carlos (Irene) Hensley, Ralph (Mary) Hensley, Sheryle (Moe) Fernandez & Lawrence Hensley. She had 11 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren & 18 great great grandchildren. She also had many nieces & nephews. She was the oldest of 6 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rafael Vincent & Otilia Paez Sousa, her brothers Rafael, Vincent & ine, her sisters Emilia & Otilia "Apo", her daughter Sheryle, her baby son Lawrence, and her husbands Hiram Sherman Hensley & Antonio Gonzalez. Teresa was a Nurse's Assistant, an Office Manager/Head Bookkeeper, a housewife & mother. She was not one to sit around & watch TV, she was an avid reader, she loved her family, having & sharing photos of her loved ones, she loved cooking, baking, gardening, knitting & crocheting. She had a great memory & never forgot a birthday. She valued learning & teaching, she enjoyed teaching anyone who wanted to learn how to crochet & sew. She was so excited to pass that on. She was especially pleased when her great granddaughter Carmen surprised her with a hand crocheted blanket on her 96th birthday. being widowed in 2006, Teresa continued to live alone on her 10 acre "ranchito" in Tierra Del Sol. She kept active driving to the post office & church close to home. She continued crocheting blankets for family members & friends. She enjoyed visitors and her catalog shopping. Teresa also volunteered at her church to teach the young girls cooking & economic skills. She kept active on her property by working one section at a time, watering & weeding. She loved the outdoors, being in nature with her plants & trees, watching the birds, squirrels and even leaving food out for the coyotes. She enjoyed living independently. Until she fell & fractured her hip and had to spend time in the hospital & rehab centers she reluctantly accepted that she could no longer drive or live alone so far away from family & medical facilities. She found her place at the Island Grove Rest in Lemon Grove. She settled in over a year & a half ago and was loved & cared for by the staff, she even crocheted blankets for the other residents. Teresa enjoyed simple pleasures, in her early years she enjoyed dancing and having a glass of bourbon now & then, more recently she enjoyed eating out & getting the occasional mani - pedi & haircut. She enjoyed visits from family local & from Mexico as well as from old friends, including the Sheriff staff who used to check in on her in Boulevard and who continued visiting her in Lemon Grove , friends from her old neighborhood & former coworkers who became like family to her. Teresa was a charming, intelligent, warm woman who was very strong, in body & mind, a truly independent person. She will be remembered for her love of sharing the family history & to "capture the moment" As she was the oldest of 6 siblings she kept their memory & stories alive to the rest of the family. She passed away on the morning of May 14, 2017 at the age of 96 yrs old. She will truly be missed and for those who knew her & loved her, she will be forever in our hearts, until we meet again. . |
