Obituary: Jacqueline Giacalone Born 9th 1922 Died 30th 2015 She passed peacefully in the morning. Jacqueline Gaetana Giacalone was born to Vito and Pietra (Calafato) Giacalone (of Sicily) in San Pedro California. Gone before her were her husband Peter and her brothers Rosario, Matteo and her sister Dorothy. She is survived by her brother Joseph, her three children, Mary (Steve) Sandborgh of Casper WY, Patricia (David) Lynn of Kingwood TX and Matthew (Debby) Giacalone of San Diego, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren and too many nieces and nephews to count. She was born to a fisherman, married a fisherman and would become the mother of a fisherman. She battled through serious health issues as a child and young lady. At the age of 12 she spent two years in a convent in Burbank trying to regain her health, which she did. This experience resulted in her deep faith and devotion to Mother Cabrini and the Catholic faith. She and her family moved to San Diego in 1934. While single she worked for the phone company as an operator. She married her husband Peter, a local fisherman with strong ties to her family and they had three children. She was an attentive and loving mother who was a strong participant in her community and in her church, St. Vincent de Paul. She could be found in the church hall every for years preparing flowers for masses. She was a terrific grandmother to her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a wonderful sense of humor that would sneak out frequently and unexpectedly . She worried incessantly about her children at all times. She was as stubborn as her father and as loving as her mother. Being married to a fisherman who was at sea much of the time she played both mom and dad rolls much of the time. She handled it with grace and determination. She worked with the church counseling young women who needed guidance. She lectured on the subject of motherhood and parenthood. She suffered from dementia in her later years but seemed to keep her sense of humor through it all. She lived a long and full and rather colorful life. She passed on peacefully with her children holding her as she passed. She earned the loyalty of her friends and family. Obituary: Giuseppe Giacalone was born on Dec. 25th, 1932 in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily. He had great pride in his culture and Roots. In 1961, he married his wife Angela in the place of his birth. In 1962, they had a son, Gaetano and in 1964, they had a daughter, Leda. In 1968, they all moved to San Diego California and he got a job at Ratners with his wife and then worked at UPS for 20 years while doing tile on the side. Doing tile was his passion, and he left his longtime career at UPS in the mid-80s to do it full time. We are sure many of his family and friends will remember the passion in his voice when he described his bathroom, or work he did on the house. He also built his own home with the help of his family and friends, and completed it in 1974, which was a great source of pride. Like his wife, the greatest moment in his life was when his 2 granddaughters \ Angela and Joanna, and his Grandson Joe were born. We have heard him described as one of the hardest working people others have met, and it is evident in the hardship he had to endure to support the family that meant the world to him. We reminisce on stories of the caves in Sicily he endured during WW2, and he went from the caves to a comfortable life in San Diego through his work ethic. Another huge pride in his life was his garden, and his famous saisa di pomodoro that he so enjoyed eating on pasta, and sharing with his loved ones amongst other things! During Christmas they would set up the Scoopa table and get rowdy! It was one of his favorite birthday traditions and everyone around at that time was sure to hear the ecstatic yelling coming from the dining room. He also enjoyed watching soccer and the world cup with his loved ones. Even though he learned to speak English well, and came to love and be interested in America and American politics, which helped him learn the English language quickly through watching TV, despite this at any time when visiting, the Italian channel, Rai was on \ Another example of his love for his culture. Another hobby of his was traveling, and he had a particular appreciation for roman architecture and history. Beyond that, he was one of the sweetest people and always as welcoming and accommodating as he could be, especially for his Family, to whom his life was devoted. He was a devoted Catholic and member of the Madonna del Paradise society, and also a member of the Mazara del Vallo club. We will miss him every day, and always be in debt to our Father and Nonno for all he has done for us. |
