Obituary: Stephen Albert Greenberger 22, 1929 – 12, 2015 Columbia, S.C. – Steve Greenberger, aged 85, passed peacefully from this life on , 12, 2015 at Palmetto Baptist Hospital. Born on 22, 1929 in Morristown, N.J. to Evelyn Stowe Greenberger and Benjamin Franklin Greenberger; Steve grew up in Morris Plains, attended Morristown High School, then transferred to Tabor Academy in Marion, M.A. where he led the football team to an undefeated season and the rowing team to a second place finish in the Henley Cup. He graduated in 1947. Steve attended Duke University and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. It was at Duke that he met his soul mate and the love of his life, Emily Coy Mimi Sullivan of Anderson, S.C. Shortly after graduating in 1951, Steve and Mimi were married and began a devoted and enviable partnership which never wavered to the end of both of their days. serving as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and winning the Best Soldier award in Basic Training, Steve joined his father in business at M.P. Greenberger in Morristown. Over the next 40 years Steve built the business into a thriving commercial enterprise, evolving from a furniture store (Greenbergers Interiors) to a residential then commercial interior design firm and finally converting the property and expanding their holdings to the commercial real estate company that it is today. Throughout his career, Steve was a leader in the American Society of Interior Designers, chairing numerous national and state committees and serving as N.J. Chapter President. In 1992 he was elected a Fellow to ASID, the only individual ever so honored in N.J. As First Vice President of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification, Steve was instrumental in developing the qualifying exam now required for professional membership in all the major design societies in North America. Steve was a lifelong learner – in 1963 he completed a degree at the New York School of Design, in 1968 he received his MBA from Baruch , CUNY. Over the years he completed courses in Solar, Landscape, Lighting and Earth Shelter Design; Management; Marketing; Art and Music. Wherever Steve lived, he worked tirelessly and tenaciously for the betterment of his community. In Morristown, he was committed to protecting its unique historic and aesthetic qualities and keeping it a vibrant and prosperous county seat. To this end, he served as Chair of the Housing Rehabilitation Advisory Board, a member of the Morristown Beautiful Advisory Board, the Arts Council of Morris , founder of the Morristown Partnership, Chairman of the Parking Authority, Chairman of the Mayors Committee to Regionalize Water and of the Sign Ordinance Committee. He was on the Board of Directors of Morristown Memorial Hospital, MYSCHOOL, Wolfcreek Wilderness, Inc, the Visiting Nurse Association, the Tuberculosis Society and the YMCA. He was Chair of the Morris Chamber of Commerce, Retail Division; a Trustee of the Presbyterian Church and President of the Rotary Club. His greatest passion, protecting the environment, led him to help found and serve as President of the Morris Parks and Land Conservancy now the N.J. Land Conservancy for 13 years. With Steve at the helm, the Conservancy formed a coalition of a dozen state and local agencies and preservation groups to protect a 30, 000 acre watershed that supplies water to 3 million people. Steve and Mimi raised their five children in Morristown and Brookside, N.J.. Steve passed his love of the outdoors on to his children and grandchildren through innumerable hiking, camping, canoeing and kayaking trips around the country and later, in retirement, to scores more children as a senior counselor at Camp Pinnacle in Hendersonville, N.C., creating a popular rowing program. In 1995, Steve and Mimi, moved to Beaufort, S.C. and bought one of the oldest houses on the Point, a real fixer-upper for which Steve designed and oversaw the renovation and expansion. He soon became immersed in community projects dedicated to protecting the fragile ecosystem of the Low Country and promoting development that enhanced the quality of life and economic vibrancy of Beaufort . To this end, he worked on key conventions for the Beaufort Open Land Trust, served as Chairman of the Beaufort Zoning Board of Appeals for five years and worked on numerous campaigns to promote candidates for Council. He was an active member of the Coastal Conservation League and the South Carolina League of Conservation Voters. Steve was a founding member of Pathways Connect and a champion of the Spanish Moss Trial. He led many a bike trip around Beaufort . He was also a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort, the Rotary Club and a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Steve and Mimi loved to travel and their favorite mode was by bicycle; they frequently took bike trips in far flung places with both old and new friends. Steves move to Beaufort allowed him and Mimi to pursue their love of rowing. each had single sculls and spent many happy mornings exploring Factory Creek and the surrounding waterways. This led to the founding of the Beaufort SC Rowing Club. Through dogged persistence, quiet enthusiasm and much patience; Steve coaxed, cajoled and strong-armed many friends and neighbors to join the Club. It is now a substantial and dedicated group with several boats and rowers of all skill levels. Until just a year ago, despite an ever diminishing lung capacity, Greenie was in the eight by 7:00am for an hours row as the sun rose over the water, three days a week. When he wasn on the water he was at the gym or building a squirrel-proof bird feeder in the back yard. With his passing we lose a great man, wonderful friend and devoted father and grandfather. Steve Greenberger was a man of few words but formidable and persistent action. A deep and forward thinker, his vision propelled many a project into the light of day and that light will be continued... |
