Obituary: Freda, self named Freda Anna Banana Josephine Parafin Haedinger Gant was born in 1917 in Cloverdale OR to Albert and Anna Haedinger, both Swiss immigrants. Anna, her mother died when Freda was just 5 years old and that event played a big part in developing her independent spirit. She grew up on a large Holstein dairy farm near Neskowin with 6 older brothers and sisters and one younger brother, John. The entire family spoke Swiss earaly on in addition to English and over the years as kids, we got to hear a lot of Mom’s favorite Swiss words and phrases, not all of them repeatable here in church. Freda often recalled the day wen her dad announced that “No more Swiss would be spoken in the house because “we live in America and we should speak good English”. Many people have said that as kids, John and Freda were practically inseparable and more or less raised each other together, except for a little guidance from older sisters Bertha and Helen, plus the occasion housemaid. Both John and Freda went on to live almost their entire lives in close proximity to each other That included the big move to Portland in the 30s, raising families in Parkrose just a few blocks from each other, and finally both ending up across the street from each other at Russellville Park. I want to note the excellent care Freda received at Russellville for 3 years. Freda graduated from Nestucca Union High School in 1936 the year Prohibition ended, and as a senior she wrote a little poetic commentary on Prohibition which ended up getting voted Favorite poem by the Student body. It was such a hit that it was printed in the High School paper. The Principle was furious to see it in print and summoned a terrified Freda down to the office for a reprimanding. Freda was expecting to be expelled. She didn’t as there was nothing he could do, and the damage her fault. I will read it here and you all can vote on it one more time: We’re having Turkey and Cider And now we don’t have to hide ‘er Cause it isn’t a sin to drink beer and gin Elections have made things much brighter Freda was also quite a shutter bug in her late teens and was really proud of her pictures. But when the Haedinger homestead burned to the ground her interest in that hobby was quelled for several years. Most of us know that came back big time as we go through the stacks of photo albums she created over the years. Freda moved to the big city of Portland in 1940 and learned to enjoy city life. Meeting new friends, she learned to play golf (quite well) , was on a bowling league team and also bought her first car which she named HEPSECIAH. Near the end of the war Freda landed a job with Davidson’s Bakery in the Cake Decorating Dept where she became very popular. One of her very best friends Vi Koski and Vi’s husband Emil thought she might like to meet this guy in the Cake dept. named Les. The two were introduced and the rest was history. were married in 1946 and had 3 wonderful children Fred, Carol and Martha. Freda was especially proud of her two granddaughters , Malia and Melissa. Freda even flew to Hawaii for Malia’s birth in 1978. Freda and Les enjoyed 47 years together until Les passed away in ’93. In that time they enjoyed many activies such as hunting and fishing ( a lot of salmon fishing) , razor clam digging vacations, huckleberry picking, card playing water skiing, travelling and of course outdoor breakfasts. Freda was a member of a Pinochle group that helped her form some life long friendships. Les retired they started walking a lot, and almost daily walked around Rose City golf course and wouldn’t you know they made friends with many people along that route. One of Freda’s lifetime highlights was being able to visit Switzerland in 1988 where she got to visit both her Father’s and Mother’s birthplaces in the homeland. She was thrilled to meet 1st and 2nd cousins on her father’s side. Her ability to speak fluent Swiss “miraculously” returned to her after close to 60 years of non use. I witnessed Freda speaking Swiss to one of the caregivers at Russellville just a couple of months ago. Of course the caregiver didn’t have a clue what she was saying but cheerfully went along with it. A devout Catholic and St Rose parishioner she sent all her children to St Rose Grade school. Les passed away Freda found the Neo Catechemunal branch of the church and it gave her years of joy (and a lot of new housemates!) Freda moved to Russellville Park four years ago and became an instant hit with the staff. She loved the variety of activites offered especially the music and the sing-a-longs where sometimes to top it off Freda would begin to YODEL. She will be deeply missed in so many ways. So many that we can’t write them all so here are a few things we know we will miss without her:
Thank You, Iche Liebe Dich Mutte (I love you, Mom) Wir alle lieben dich Freda (We all love you Freda) |
