Obituary: Mrs. Myrtle Elliott Williams Gossett, age 92, of Brookridge Retirement in Winston-Salem, formerly of Long Island, N.C. (Catawba ), died on , 15, 2011. A memorial service will be held , 19 at 2:00pm at Olivet Baptist Church, 7893 Monbo Rd., Catawba, NC. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Mrs. Gossett was born 21, 1918 in Iredell . She was one of twelve children of James Thomas Elliott and Ester Albertine Bradford. She graduated from Sherrills Ford School where she was salutatorian of her class and a member of the all-star girls basketball team. She later attended Mitchell Community in Statesville, N.C. Myrtle was a long time active member of Olivet Baptist Church where she was a school teacher and choir director. She also directed the choirs of several other churches while living in Catawba . She enjoyed playing the guitar, writing poetry and painting. At her death, she was a member of Griffith Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was married to Baynes T.Williams who predeceased her. lived in Long Island where she raised a family and worked in area factories. In the early 1960s she trained as a Medical Secretary at Mitchell and worked for several doctors in the area as well as Davis, Iredell Memorial and Catawba Memorial Hospitals. Later, she moved to Winston-Salem and completed the Respiratory Therapy program at Forsyth Technical Community . She worked in that capacity, eventually becoming shift supervisor at both Forsyth Memorial Hospital and Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. In 1977 she married Matthew L. Gossett. . her official retirement, she continued to work intermittently in her profession at other medical facilities in Winston-Salem, Salisbury and Mt. Airy. Mrs. Gossett was predeceased by her second husband, Matthew Gossett, and her son, Baynes Clayton Williams and all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her three sons and their families: Paul Thomas Williams of Greensboro and his wife, Linda C. Rhyne, and their daughter, Stewart Rhyne Williams; Brian Allen Williams of Kernersville and his son, Brian Allen Williams, Jr; Lane Bradley Williams of Winston-Salem and wife, Nancy, and her sons Joseph and Michael Pike and her daughter, Amanda Story; and her deceased sons children, Christy Michelle Williams, Heather Nicole Williams, Stephanie Jean Williams, and Clayton Allen Williams of Miami, Florida. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Catawba and surrounding area. Memorials may be made to Baptist Retirement s Benevolence Fund, P.O.
