Obituary: JACK GOFORTH Arthur Jackson Goforth, 77, of Statesville, passed away , 4, 2010, at Iredell Memorial Hospital, after a courageous three year battle with cancer. Jack was born 27, 1933, in Statesville, and was the youngest son of the late Arthur Z. Goforth and Margaret Lorena Douglas Goforth. He was a graduate of Statesville High School, class of 1951, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Stuttgart, Germany, during the Korean War. He also attended Mitchell and Mars Hill in North Carolina. He was married to Jeanette Setzer Goforth, who survives. Jack was a life-long member of Christ Boulevard UMC. He worked for the Postal Service for 35 years. He was also active in the community, playing and coaching baseball for over 40 years. Jack was one of the original directors of the Iredell Youth Athletic Association. In addition, he was an active member of the local Elks, Moose and VFW lodges, and more recently the West Iredell Ruritan Club. Jack remained an avid baseball fan his entire life, following the Atlanta Braves and attending the 1996 World Series. In addition to Jeanette, his wife of 54 years, Jack is survived by two daughters, Susan Renee Goforth, of Asheville, and Lydia Goforth Mayberry and husband, Sonny, of Statesville; a son, Howard Douglas Goforth and wife, Kim, of Marietta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Trey Mayberry, of Statesville, and Tyler Francis Goforth and Samantha Douglas Goforth, both of Marietta, Ga.; two brothers, John Douglas Goforth and Donald Avery Goforth; an uncle, David E. Douglas; and an aunt, Mary Douglas Warren. Services celebrating the life of Jack Goforth will be held at 2 p.m. at Christ Boulevard UMC with the Rev. Ron Doub officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood with full military honors accorded by the Iredell Veterans Council. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. evening at Bunch-Johnson . In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to Lymphoma Research Foundation; Statesville High School Class of 1951 Scholarship Foundation; or Christ Boulevard UMC.
