Obituary: Age 84
Of St Paul

Preceded in death by Wife, Marilyn (Tegge); Brother, Donald; Sister, Darlene. Visitation (2-4pm) followed by Service (4pm) on , 12, 2017 at Divinity Lutheran Church, 1655 E. Cottage Ave, St Paul.

Eulogy Presented at Service:

My father, Merlin Dominic Gorowsky, was born 25, 1932, the third child of Catherine and Dan Gorowsky.

From the start he was an inventor. Ive often said if I were stranded on a desert island and could only have one person with me, Id choose him. Hed keep us alive, and probably figure out how to get us off the island. Im pretty sure wed feast on fish.

It never occurred to him to buy something already made. If he needed it, he just made it himself. He wanted a riding snow plow, so he made it. If he wanted an apple corer for pies, he made one. In the army it was his job to make sure there was ink and paper available for the teletype machines, and to collect the broken teletype machines to send back to the fixit shop. Within a month the fixit shop wasn getting any machines to repair anymore and they wondered why. discovered my dad was bored, so he would take apart one machine and use the parts to fix the other two or three that were broken, so there weren any broken ones to send back. Incredibly, he got in trouble for that.

He was always building a better birdfeeder. He loved Zig and Zag, two backyard squirrels that he eventually trained to eat peanuts from his hand. But he wanted to keep them out of the birdfeeder. My dad was ingenious, but Zig and Zag outwitted him every time. clung to strings suspending the birdfeeder. jumped from nearby trees when the grease made climbing the pole impossible. slid off the guard Dad built, but still managed to get into the seeds. We had daily updates on those squirrels for quite a while.

He might have been consigned to be a welder in the family business, but he was still an inventor. He made 8 cubic yard buckets for the sand shovels and big equipment used to build roads. His buckets lasted 8 times longer than anyone elses. He recently told me the secret had something to do with heating the special alloy to a certain temperature that made it much stronger. But he didn patent the method because he didn want someone to change just one little thing and copy him. He retired in 1994, but Craig spotted his distinct design on one of his buckets still in use to update I35E near Maryland Avenue last year.

Well, his buckets became famous. One day a salesman came to the shop and asked how much the dealer price was. Dad told him in his usual tactful way that his price was his price and he didn care if the buyer was the president or a bum. The salesman persisted. My dad stood firm.

tried one more time. invited him to their fancy, carpeted, paneled office and tried to sweet-talk him into a reduced price. My dad showed up after work covered in soot in his welding clothes and again told them his price was his price. The buyer insisted that his equipment had to have a Gorowsky bucket or he wouldn buy their machine.

Dad got his price.

He loved to go shopping for a car or some other large expense with a pocketful of cash. If they treated him well, he bought the item. If they scorned his humble attire, he left, but not without flashing his cash at them to let them know they should treat everyone with courtesy, no matter how they looked.

It didn always go both ways, however. A customer walked in during the 1970s with a full head of flowing hair. Dad shooed him out of the shop and told him he was a fire hazard.

Dad was very physical. He loved gymnastics and hockey and tennis. Luck wasn on his side, however. He played the same position as Wendall Anderson, who eventually became the Governor of Minnesota, so he didn get much ice time, but they had a splendid class reunion! He also played tennis and won the citywide championship in 1950, the only year they didn award a trophy. His mom felt so bad about it she had a trophy made for him.

He was fascinated with flying. At age ten or so he tried to fly by jumping off the garage roof, but couldn flap his arms quite fast enough. The son of a welder with a family business, he of course worked as a welder, but flying never left his heart. He eventually had to content himself with model airplanes, which became a passion. He flew with the Sodbusters model airplane flying club for decades, and invented the first successful self-launched catapult, but never marketed it. Flying filled his soul, and last spring as 6 doctors were all scrambling to save his life, he told them one of his favorite jokes through the oxygen mask. Here it is:

Joe and Schmoe were seated on the airplane which was getting ready for takeoff. Joe got more and more nervous as the plane taxied down the runway. Eyes wide with fear he turned to Schmoe and asked, How high do you think we will be flying? Schmoe answered, Oh, I think we will be cruising about 30,000 feet.

Thirty thousand feet! cried Joe. Ooooh, thats terrible!

Now, aren you a Christian man? asked Schmoe. You have nothing to fear. Remember, Jesus said continued...

Marilyn Fay Gorowsky, born July 11, 1932 joined the Lord October 31, 2015 in Minnesota. Marilyn was 83. Obituary: Known for her laughter, kind heart, hopeful spirit and can-do attitude, Marilyn Fay Gorowsky, nee Tegge, passed from this world into eternal life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on 31, 2015. She is survived by her husband of 58 and 1/2 years, Merlin, daughter Carrie Micko (Robert) and sons Craig Gorowsky (Jennifer) and Glen Gorowsky (Laurie). Grandchildren Emily, Laura, John, Steven, Susan, Ricky, Daniel, Karen, Andie and Kai. Great grandchild Samuel.

Born and raised in Upper Peninsula Michigan, she lived above her father's jewelry store in Iron River during the winter, and spent summers on Hagerman Lake in a cabin built by her father from the wood on the 3 acres of land known as Pine Point. The third girl of four children, mom loved being in the middle of the fray of many friends and relatives who were always coming out for sing-a-longs featuring her brother Dick on the guitar and father Al on the banjo. Everyone would gather at the water's edge and sit around the bon fire and sing in harmony. No wonder my mom loved music!

Mom started out very shy. But she was always there to defend the defenseless. Once her father was remarking that the dog needed to go on a diet. Mom, who never said anything, piped up and noted, "But you're fat, and you still eat!" Everyone dissolved in laughter and the dog got dinner.

Mom grew up and the family moved to California for her mother's health. She worked in a florist shop for a while, and her skill with flowers continued her whole life. Ever nurturing in every aspect of her life, even in the end she managed to keep an African violet alive, even while it did the backstroke in the pot that she could no longer see or feel or tell whether it truly did need another watering.

Her sister, Shirlee, worked in Hollywood and in 1949 became the first Miss USA and a cover girl model. Somehow she roped mom into a beauty contest a couple of years later. Mom's shyness ambushed her and she couldn't play the piano for the talent show, but she won Miss Beauty of Burbank in 1951. That meant a lot to her all her life.

Eventually her father, Al, could stand it no longer and persuaded her mother, Esther, to return to the U. P. by allowing her to remodel the cabin. (See where I get it, kids?) Mom was always proud that the article her mother wrote about the remodel was published in good housekeeping magazine.

Always so shy, mom surprised everyone and suddenly decided she wanted to see the world. She moved to New York and got a job in the typing pool at NBC. She saw many celebrities, including her beloved Dean Martin. My father, Merlin, was in the army, stationed in New York. He had dated my mom's roommate, Mary, but once Mary wasn able to go out with him and sent mom instead. For a while, Dad took out whoever was available when he was in town. One day he saw Mom in the balcony, singing in the church choir and decided she was his angel. Mom had been looking for a Polish Lutheran, a difficult combination to find! And here he was!

often went ice skating in central park. One day in the summer, he again took her to central park. She wore a beautiful light pink woolen dress. As he handed her a hot dog full of all her favorite condiments, she squeezed it too hard and the meat popped out and rolled down the front of her. Another time she was bringing donated clothes to a charity and hung them on the rail on the bus. As the driver cruised down a hill, so did the clothes, snagging a woman's wig with them!

Eventually mom moved to Saint Paul and eventually dad popped the question. As he formed the words a blinding light shone through the window of the car and a policeman told them they were not supposed to be in the park after dark and to move along. Dad asked, "Can I finish asking this woman to be my wife first?" The policemen said yes, and mom said yes and the rest is history.

married 1st, 1957, and I came along the next . A few months later, my dad, who had made this trip to Michigan many times in record time, drove his new family to the cabin on the lake. The last few miles are like a roller coaster ride over high hills and deep valleys. Poor mom. Baby Carrie lost it all over her and they had to pull over and clean up before showing me off to the relatives.

A couple of years later, no siblings had yet followed, so mom was my playmate. I still remember when I was two years old. We were at the top of the neighborhood sliding hill and she was instructing me how to roll off the toboggan if it looked like we were going to hit a tree. She got on first and I snuggled up behind her. As soon as we started down the hill I was sure we were going to hit a tree (see kids, I've been a terrible passenger all my life!) So I rolled off the toboggan. Mom, on the other hand, flew like the wind, soaring down the hill and then up the 20-foot pile of logs they'd cleared for new housing and over the top she disappeared. Before I could start to cry I heard her famous laugh and she came around the corner and the world was good again.

Two brothers joined the family, but no sisters. So she remained my playmate, teaching me to sew and cook continued...
